Deadline Potpourri

Since the Flames and Oilers don't play until Tuesday, we'll just make this an open thread for the trading day deadline. We'll just add links and thoughts as we go along. As usual, trade rumour junkies will want to spend a good deal of time over at Spector's Hockey.

Mr. Glass is done for the season. Again. That's four Oilers felled to season-enders this year. What's in the water at Rexall?

• Bob McKenzie reports that the Oilers are interested in Alex Steen. I wonder if the Oilers can gather a whole team of players whose Dad's used to play against Kevin Lowe? That would be impressive.

• Identify your worst trade scenario here.

• BoA favorite Darren McCarty is back with the Wings.

• The Big Foppa, Peter Forsberg, is headed back to the Avalanche.

• Dan Boyle has re-signed with the Lightning.

• Vaclav Prospal is a Flyer.

• Ross McKeon is reporting that Dallas will get Brad Richards, and Montreal will get Marian Hossa.

• (MATT) Two live-blogs to recommend for the day: Inside the Flames and Jay Onrait. This is the 3rd year (IIRC) Onrait been doing it; catching up this morning, I let out quite a few guffaws ("It is snowing heavily outside my window. If anyone from the Army is reading this please remain on standby...").

Comments:

What about arena news?

Hey, that dads policy got us Sam Gagner. Don't knock it.

Trying to guess at some possible destinations for Eriksson/The Warrener and Huselius...

I think Juice to the Hawks is a possibility; they need a PP producer. Flames could certainly get Lapointe back, but I wonder if they couldn't get Tuomo... his underlying numbers aren't as bad as you'd think based on a bazillion-game goalless streak, he's not a wuss, and he clearly still has an upside.

Penguins are the obvious candidate to take on a vet. dman with another year left on his deal, but I suspect there's probably 5 other teams hoping to oblige them. Spector passes on FLA/Salei's name, but I don't think so. He has 2 years left on his deal, w/ a $3M cap hit in the year that Malkin, Staal, Armstrong, Talbot, etc. etc. start getting paid. Other than the Pens, it could be just about anyone pending *other* trades.

I wonder if the Oilers can gather a whole team of players whose Dad's used to play against Kevin Lowe? That would be impressive.

I wonder what a Nepotism All-Stars team would look like? Because I'm bored in biomechanics lecture, here's a list of all active NHLers (no Phillipe Sauve) or NHL prospects whose fathers played in the NHL during Lowe's career (1979-97). I've excluded one-game wonders from both columns, for obvious reasons.

Chris Bourque (Ray)
Gregory Campbell (Colin)
Jean-Philippe Cote (Alain)
Patrick Eaves (Mike)
Nick Foligno (Mike)
Sam Gagner (Dave) <-- Current Oiler
Blake Geoffrion (Dan)
John Grahame (Ron) <-- Played 40 games for LA and Quebec from 1979-81; may not have played against Lowe
Chris Hajt (Bill) <-- Not really "active," as such, but for LT's sake
Nicklas Hagman (Matti) <-- Only played for Oilers during Lowe's career
Ryan Malone (Greg)
Robert Nilsson (Kent) <-- Current Oiler
Brandon Nolan (Ted)
Eric Nystrom (Bob) <-- Current Flame
Taylor Pyatt (Nelson) <-- Nelson played 13 games for Colorado in 1979-80; may not have played Lowe
Danny Richmond (Steve) <-- I'd never heard of either of these guys until today
Paul Stastny (Peter)
Yan Stastny (Peter) <-- Former Oiler
Alex Steen (Thomas)
Brandon Sutter (Brent)
Brett Sutter (Darryl) <-- Current Flames prospect
Jeff Tambellini (Steve)
Ben Walter (Ryan)

And for bonus marks, nephews of former Lowe adversaries include Milan Lucic (Dan Kesa) and Ryan Suter (Gary), as well as the aforementioned Sutters. Big thing to note here is only one goalie, Grahame, so maybe we toss Sauve back in there, but I guess it is possible. Not many defencemen, either.

I'd suggest that Ethan Moreau should just hang 'em up, but then I thought about him with all that spare time and a kitchen full of scary appliances and maybe its better to just keep him close to the dressing room and maybe tape some mittens to his hands.

I keep overlooking another asset that Sutter is presumably willing to deal, that might actually fetch some value as part of a package: this guy.

cynical joe,

You forgot the Basketball court.

Uh Matt, for those of us who don't recognize cyrillic characters...Is that Giodano or Taratukhin(sp)?

Uh Matt, for those of us who don't recognize cyrillic characters...Is that Giodano or Taratukhin(sp)?

Giordano. Taratukhin's name would start with a recognizable "Ta". (Also, "Mapko" is very close to "Marco".)

Thank you, three years of Russian at U of C.

Ah, d-grande, love how you put the (sp?) after Taratukhin -- which you spelled correctly -- after misspelling Giordano.

I never took Russian -- how the hell did I find that page in the first place? (I honestly have no idea or recollection; I've had it bookmarked for a couple of months.)

Cmon...how much more "Giordano" could someone possibly look?

Anyways, Im sure Gio would have some value, probably more as a throw-in on a bigger deal.

I still hold-out hope he'll return to the Flames next year though.

That's four Oilers felled to season-enders this year. What's in the water at Rexall?

Or, what's in the supplements and/or stimulants given to members of Chad Moreau's training program?

Looks like Tangs is staying...
from TSN

Hey, that dads policy got us Sam Gagner. Don't knock it.

I wasn't. I was genuinely intrigued to see whether or not it could be done. Thanks to Doogie, we know it can be. In fact, it ain't that bad of a team.

Huzzah! Sometimes you gotta laugh. Key graf from the Tanguay story:

When asked again about the winger's status, Sutter replied flatly, "I already answered that question. I am not trading Tanguay."

Absolutely fucking *baffling* concluding sentence to same story:

Details to follow.

Well done, TSN.

My favorite line:

The most circulated rumour had him going to the Montreal Canadiens for winger Michael Ryder.

Ah. Of course. But circulated by whom?

Anyone wanting to read some fun stuff on the subject of rumours and implications made by newspapers should read this story from Slate. Not at all hockey related, but funny as hell.

It is Giordano. Same place and date of birth.

Do the Flames still have rights to him? Can he be used as trade boat by the Flames? Why did he/Flames not sign? Why so many damn questions???

after the injury to moreau, i think we see the same team down the stretch as we have now. i'm hoping pouliot draws in and has some success down the stretch. i am also hoping to see some of the bottom feeders deal off their players making it easier to avoid the bottom 5. not really ideal but the players that we have with value, i'd rather keep.

So much depends on what Burke does with that pick. If he flips it, will Lowe just dress as many kids as possible? Should he? Or should he stick with the vets? The season is over for us. All that's left now is to get some kids some ice-time, play spoiler, and try to avoid giving Burke Stamkos.

I'm trying to figure out how they're going to come up with the Ryder-Tanguay trade now. I think the best bet is that we trade every player EXCEPT Ryder and Tanguay. Remember, you heard it here first.

I think it's clear from all the injuries that Rexall Place is cursed. Have you guys thought about building a new arena to play in?

Absolutely fucking *baffling* concluding sentence to same story:

I fell out of my chair when I read that line. I think it might as well have said, "In view of the fact that there is nothing of interest to speak of, TSN will continue to circulate rumours about Tanguay being traded."

Watch a Tanguay trade come down now, just to spite all of us.

If he flips it, will Lowe just dress as many kids as possible? Should he?

I don't know why this is even a topic of discussion. Lowe and MacT have to do what they think is in the long term interest of the team. The pick is gone, and yeah, seeing Burke with a top 3 pick would probably make me cry, but it's just insanity if that pick enters into the decision making process for this team at all moving forward.

Sure, but we all know it will. Same way we got Sheldon Souray because the EIG wanted to look good after the initial Katz offer.

Here's a question that's a little OT:

Is Olli Jokinen the most overrated player in the league? I've started to think about it since I've seen "Jokinen for Tanguay" topics pop up on messageboards. Seems like 90% of people out there think that that's a lop-sided deal in favor of the Flames and would require a high pick and/or another decent roster player to get it done...

It's a lateral move - at best - in my eyes.

Sure, but we all know it will. Same way we got Sheldon Souray because the EIG wanted to look good after the initial Katz offer.

Sigh...you're probably right. But was that Lowe or was it the EIG? Maybe (maybe) Lowe and company will make better decisions with batman lurking in the shaddows.

But was that Lowe or was it the EIG?

I think it was the EIG. One of the things that I found most interesting about that Katz conference call was his repeated statements about running an efficient business, with little bureaucracy, and empowering management to make their own decisions. I took that to be a subtle slap at the EIG, but I could just be projecting.

Forsberg to the Avalanche.

Looks like it's going to be a fun day to be an Oilers fan in Vancouver today. The 'nuck lovers will be panicking. Wonder if Nonis will too. Or Sutter for that matter. No worries about Lowe - he doesn't know it's trade deadline yet.

I think it might as well have said, "In view of the fact that there is nothing of interest to speak of, TSN will continue to circulate rumours about Tanguay being traded."

Well, they look a little silly circulating rumours abotu Mats Sundin waiving his NTC now, so they need something to keep them busy.

Alex Steen really isn't a bad hockey player. If you're a young Toronto Maple Leaf (which means that you're getting poop for ice time unless you're playing with Sundin, and you're not playing with Sundin because you're a kid, and that means whatever line you're on is going to get slaughtered), his stats aren't too bad. And we all know he has the skill.

So I'd take him. But why in God's name would Fletcher trade him? The guy signed a two-year extension last week; trading him now would amount to saying 'sign with Toronto! We treat you like crap! Hey, guy, waiving those no-trade clauses that we gave you yet?'

For this reason, I suspect the Steen rumours are so much hot air designed to keep the Toronto fans interested now that all their big trades have gone down the tubes.

Fun fact as well - according to rumour the Leafs hedged on getting Pronger because Lowe wanted Steen and Kaberle and they would not give up Steen, offering Stajan instead.

Plus many assets, er, picks.

I think the Leafs might be thinking they should have made that deal.

For that matter, maybe the Oilers too - Stajan or Steen.

Couldn't the Flames keep Tanguay and acquire Jokinen?

That would be their best play, IMO.

Tanguay-Jokinen-Iginla

That would be disgusting.

Just to add, I believe Olli lives up to his billing. It's Tanguay who gets the short end of the stick when it comes to reputation. I can't see any manoeuver the Falmes could make with Tanguay that would leave them a better team. Seriously.

It's a lateral move - at best - in my eyes.

Yeah, at best. PP might get a bit better, but Tanguay has been a better EV producer in every season I've been able to check. Plus he's, what, 4 years younger? Olli would make the Flames (or any team) better, but not at the price of Tanguay.

Another OT -- is it true that Smytty chopped off his moolay?

So does that Forsberg move force some hands in the West? Has to, right?

Another OT -- is it true that Smytty chopped off his moolay?

Shut the front door. Really?

I think it is true. At the very least, it has become a faux-moolay.

I'm starting to think that there really is something wrong with the Oil's off-season training program. Sometimes less is more.

My daily commute, which consists of 3-4 hours of sports radio, has been unfuckingbearable lately. Today, the main topic of conversation was how Sundin should no longer be the main topic of conversation.

The one time it did move elsewhere:

McCown: Edmonton must be a seller, but I have no clue what they are looking to move. Calgary seems to be standing pat. What do you think Vancouver might be looking for at the deadline?

Brunt: I think Vancouver would have really liked to get Sundin.

At which point I furiously sideswipe the car next to me just for the satisfaction of hearing somebody in Toronto curse something other than Sundin.

And no, the irony that my last post furthers the Sundin conversation was not lost on me. I figure the battle is over, and we've already lost.

I'm starting to think that there really is something wrong with the Oil's off-season training program. Sometimes less is more.

I've been applying that philosophy myself for the last 10 years or so.

And you haven't been injured, am I right?

Correct, Hugh. I remain as feisty as ever on the ice hockey rink.

I, for one, can hardly wait for the deadline sideshow to pass so TSN can get back to obsessing about what matters.

Crosby.

Excellent point, Matt. They were just talking about Ottawa firing Paddock after a 5-0 loss to the Leafs. What does that have to do with strong, muscular legs?

Prospal to Philadelphia for Picard and a 2nd or 3rd, as per TSN.

Oh, and apparently Boyle re-upped. 6 Years, 40-M.

and Brian Campbell says thank you Danny Boyle

Thanks, DG. Philly. Man.

Prospal to Philadelphia for Picard and a 2nd or 3rd, as per TSN.

Suggested headline: LIVE LONG AND PROSPAL

Geez what happened to the Senators...is it too late to fire Paddock and hire Larry Robinson?

Bob McKenzie says Robert Lang is available. $4M/yr (next season too) for a guy who has gone +42/-21 5v5 for the team presently about 23rd in the league.

Vancouver or Dallas may wind up snagging him as a consolation prize after missing out on BRichards, which makes me a bit... queasy.

Looks like Dallas is going to get Richards, and Montreal is going to get Hossa.

Oh, I hope that Richards and Hossa go anywhere but to my beloved Canucks. Trading Kesler would be Cam Neely all over again.
Ps. Jokinen kicks Tanguays ass in everyway, and I cant think of many who would be takin Alex over Olli on any team. One plays with passion and the other doesnt care!

Is it just me, or does the picture of Richards attached to that news story make him look a bit...I dunno, evil?

It shows me he cares, which means he's awesome. :)

as per TSN, Comrie re-upped for a year, and Jackman signed an extension.

Ten bucks says Ross McKeon has no unique source and gets one or both of those wrong.

If you are looking for another live blog to check out during the deadline. Look no further than Illegal Curve. Providing up to the minute updates and commenting on the happenings in the TSN broadcast booth.

For example:
8:06am:"(Bob)McKenzie tells us that Rob Blake (the actor) has not yet waived his no trade clause. In other news, McKenzie has waived his no bacon clause and is expecting the breakfast B.E.L.T in a matter of moments"
http://illegalcurve.blogspot.com/2008/02/illegal-curves-inaugural-live-trade.html

I've seen the Bruce Willis movie with Mr. Glass in it.

In calling Ethan Moreau "Mr. Glass" are you referring to that "Mr. Glass"?

Ethan Moreau is nothing like that Mr. Glass, played by Samuel Jackson.

He's more like the knight in Monty Python, who won't give up no matter how injured he gets.

Jokinen kicks Tanguays ass in everyway, and I cant think of many who would be takin Alex over Olli on any team. One plays with passion and the other doesnt care!

I rest my case.
