Battle Game Day: Open Thread

A One, Two, Three , Four...

Hit me! Last game before the All-Star break. Both teams bit by the injury bug. Four points on the line. Battle of Alberta Day up at RATT. I don't know karate, but I know ka-razy. Yes, I do!

It's the big Payback for the Oilers. The Flames have got down with our girlfriend, and that ain't right. I'm mad. Time for revenge! Tie up the season series, and make it tight.

Tonight has the feel of a barn-burner. We're going to see some wheelin'. We're going to see some dealin'. Hopefully, we won't see no damn squealin'. Cuz I can dig some rappin'. I can definitely dig some scrappin'. But I can't dig that backstabbin'. Oh, no!

Prediction: Time to be Super Bad. 4-3, Oilers. Joffrey Lupul has a move that tells him what to do. He shows the righteous touch, scoring a hat-trick. The Hardest Working Man In Hockey scores on its most exciting play. Zach "No Need To Be Saved By The Bell" Stortini and Jean-Luc Godard start the French New Wave with two rounds of fistacuffs, and I feel so nice, good God, I jump back and kiss myself!!! WAAAAAATTTTCH ME!!!!

Comments:

Huh. Stuck at work tonight and for every Saturday night for the rest of my life.

Anyone know where I could find a webcast of this game somehow?

goilersszz.

You, my friend, have soul, AND you're SUPER BAD!

OIL!

If the Oilers lose, it's because my friends reminded me I have a date to keep.

I've been drinking.

I'm going drinking.

I'll be back in time for puck drop.

If the Oilers lose, it's because my friends reminded me I have a date to keep.

Or because you're mean.

BD: Are you hanging out with Sleek again?

Joffrey Lupul is going to prove tonight he has a sack.

Seriously.

Lupul gets 2, Fernando gets the most exciting play in hockey, Horcoff picks up 3 assists and the Oilers win 3-1.

Ok, I'm back.

hockeygirl - nah, although I think Earl and I would make a dangerous pair if we were ever let loose. If we ever met, that is.

Family is away, last night of two weeks away. Went to my local for a few.

Cleaning now.

>Cleaning now.

You clean drunk as well? I don't know how many times I come home late on Fridays and decide to scrub my shower walls or wash dishes.

I guess I'm more enterprising after a few pints.

Drunk housekeeping, eh? Sounds awesome. Just remember if you ARE going to drink more, don't mix up the cleaner bottles with the booze bottles.

This could make for an interesting night now...

And BD? I'm sure you and Earl would be awesome together. I'll come by in the hgcopter and give you ride down to Cali and you guys can hang.

Two weeks on my own doing what I want when I want.

The least I can do is make sure that the place is clean and full of food.

Although whenever we have people over I do always clean like crazy when everyone has left. Hmmm.

Earl was talking a while back about coming this way but my guess is it was the booze talking.

My guess is we could show him a good time though.

Speaking of which, mike w., chris!, how about a Oilogosphere night out some Saturday coming?

Unless you're serious about the Saturday night working thing?

Who let Cherry into the city limits?

Nice hit by Bergeron. Like Remenda and Hughson said, it is a lost art.

It's such a lost art that Ritchie thought it was dirty. Either that or he's clueless as to what a legal hit is.

Earl was talking a while back about coming this way but my guess is it was the booze talking.

I would imagine so.

Hey, did anyone hear why Warrener is out but Andrea Susan is in?

Not sure when it became de rigeur to drop the gloves everytime someone got taken out with a clean hit.

And not sure why Ritchie doesn't get the extra two there.

This game is a replay of last Saturdays. Nice pace but a whole lot of nothing going on.

>a Oilogosphere night out some Saturday coming?

I'd love to.

>Unless you're serious about the Saturday night working thing?

That's the thing. This is my prison every Saturday. I'm in my cubicle now getting periodic updates from Yahoo.

Bah.

Oh for fuck's sakes.

Well you're not missing much. Stupid penalty because Roloson's stick was in the trapezoid and then Laddy is at sea as Lombardi scores.

Flames' penalty.

Maybe we can go out on your boat.

We'll have to figure something out. The Saturday deal a longterm thing?

Same post I threw up at IOF....presenting "Oilers PP Tactics 101":

So Stoll is out, eliminating one of your point men from the first PP unit.

Normal logic: drop Sykora back to the point, move Horcoff up between Smyth and Hemsky, give Torres or Pisani some time on the 2nd unit with Lupul and Nedved.

MacT/Simpson logic: let's put Toby Petersen on the first unit PP point and make our PP look even more lethargic!

How Craig Simpson still has a job is beyond me....it's embarassing that the Oilers went 0-for-3 that period and might have 2 PP shots total, and the Flames lethargic PP managed to score on their opportunity.

Oh, and I want to see Jason Smith kick Dion Phaneuf's ass.

Yep, not sure why Peterson is out there. I'd expect almost any other player to be out there rather then him.

Love to see Smith take on Phaneuf but its not likely to happen.

Oilers are definitely a lot more surly since the Wild game.

In terms of forwards on the PP?

Petersen should be on the ice ahead of all forwards dressed tonight with the name "Zach".

That's it.

Oh for crap's sake!

Squeeze those pads Roli. Godamnit, I hate this new hybrid style of goaltending.

Terry Sawchuk would have had that one!

Roli!

Head up! Stick down! Don't get beat!

Roli!

Head up! Stick down! Don't get beat!

Terry's long dead but he would have had it. Just stand there, stick on the ice and let it hit you when he's shooting from that angle.

Man this is Deja Vu and I'm not talking about that French Resistance guy who helped Nick Rivers fight the Nazis in East Germany either.

The Flames have 2 good scoring chances tonight by my count.

They have three goals.

Ladislav Smid looks like absolute shit.

Any anytime there's a rebound in the Flames end, the Oilers don't have a player anywhere even close by.

Down 3-0 to a team that played last night and is without their best player?

Fucking embarassing. But should we expect any less from a MacT-coached squad when it comes to laying an egg in a "big" game?

I hope that Staios and Tjarnqvist get well this week, and that the Stuart-for-Bergeron plus picks rumor from Oilfans is indeed the truth.

For this team to have success, they need to get to a point where only one of Smid/Greene/Bergeron/Roy are in the lineup on any given night. Plain and simple

Hmm. Goaltending and Smid.

Hate to hack on the kid but an awful play on the third goal and he got caught in no-man's land on the first.

But between the first and third - all goaltending. Kiprusoff shuts the Oilers down again and again and then Roli lets in that softie and game over.

Or close to it.

Stortini doesn't look out of place.

One positive from tonight - the Leafs just got smoked.

Take my happiness where I can get it.

The D have to man up for fucks sake. Quit backing in hit the bastards. Roli why the fuck is he in there once again put Jussi in. The simplest thing is an adventure with Roli.
Bergy has played his way out my personal doghouse. But if the Oilers want to be creampuffs they are doing a good job. This team is way to soft.
For fucks sake there better be some goals or fight in the 1st 5 of the 3rd. I am looking forward to my 2 week business trip to where hockey is not on TV. UK here I come

Yes, Black Dog, Stortini is a big positive.

Skating isn't anywhere close to the issue I thought it might be.

What do you guys think about the share of blame on that goal? I say 80% on Smid and 20% on Hemsky.

Dammit Laco, even if you have to take a holding penalty on that one, it MIGHT just be a penalty-worth-taking.

FUCK!

The thing with Stortini is he has had an impact in limited minutes. You notice him when he's hitting guys and you don't notice him for making mistakes.

Small sample size though.

As for that goal, well, Hemsky turns it over at that spot game in and game out - you're always going to get turnovers from him.

Part of the package.

But Smid just played it terribly. Take the man. If he does then worse case its a penalty but likely it ends up being nothing.

Kid is out of his depth but of course we knew that.

I just have to tip my hat to the Flames and call them my Daddy.

I'm finding it really hard not to pull the chute here.

This just looks like a very whipped Oilers team right now. Nothing but nothing seems to be going right on a consistent basis this season.

Short term voice says screw it, trade Smytty cause he sure isn't the kind of leader who can get this team through its annual mid season slide, and get a D-man. Hell, I'd even forgive Pronger if the Oil coul dget him again.

Long term voice says maybe this D will be be the envy of the league in a few years, but right now, they are so raw.

Which way do you go?

Goaltending. Goaltending.

Oh my.

4-0. But if Roli stops that second goal and the Oilers beat Kiprusoff in the second ...

Same as last week. Same thing.

Oilers are going to lose this game. They might have won it but so it goes.

Kiprusoff is in the zone. Six people in front of him and he's stopping everything.

That's all for me lads and lasses. Family returns tomorrow which means my last chance to get a good sleep for a while. And then I have to get up and wash the stink ass dog.

What do Eric Godard and Dion Phaneuf have in common?

They're both gigantic pussies. Drop the visor and man-up.

And Reasoner slams Nilson's head into the ice. Nice work.

Read your comment cc - well, are you reading to much into this game? Smyth has done his best this game and this week but hasn't produced much. However we know from the stretch run last year and the first half of this season he can carry a team.

12 points out of a possible 20 in the past week plus. Probably not good enough but when you're playing four rooks on the back end I'm not sure what reasonable expectations are. Look at Anaheim with their injuries.

On that replay, I could swear I saw fuckhead Phaneuf try to kick Stortini.

Time to teach wonderboy a lesson. Smith? Greene? One of you two he might not back down from like the bitch that he is.

And mc, agreed on Smid and on Stortini.

Send the kid down. Danny Syvret could do no worse. I think Laddy will be good but he's getting burned out there.

And Stortini, well, he's trying to win a job and will do anything to win a job and if it means running Reghyr and Phaneuf, well he'll do it.

And good for him.

That's why I respect Robyn Regehr and why I'm a Jason Smith fan.

Man vs. man.

Dion Phaneuf can't hold either of their jockstraps right now. He's a chicken.

Black Dog,

9th place, slowing letting the rest of the division get away, and no one seems to give a rats ass.

The Anaheim analogy is weak at best as they pretty much can be a .500 team the rest of the way and make the playoffs.

Can the Oilers afford that luxury?

Can they afford to keep Smyth for another 3-5 years of this?

And yes, Phaneuf in a douche bag.

I'd take him over MAB, SMid, or Greene anyday.

Head.

Fucking.

Man.

Fucking.

Pass.

The Edmonton Oilers are all hat and no cattle because they can't make a tape to tape.

Jesus H. Fucking Christ.

Smyth is in After Hours

Is it me or does this Oilers team look like the Charlestown Chiefs, pre-Hansons, in their own end?

All that's missing right now, is Denis Lemieux shouting at Johnny Upton and Mo Wanchuk, and the cheesy organ music being played when the Flames score.

Leave me alone! Stortini was calling me names. I won't fight unless he asks nicely.

And stop calling me Celine/Quasimodo. It's mean.

Oh...

Another Oilers game, another night I cannot recall an occasion where the Oilers had an odd-man rush.

Anyone got any sort of reasonable guess how many additional goals that even a mid-level puckmover might have added to this team's total this year, between their own abilities and having guys like Tjarnqvist and Hejda playing roles on the 2nd and 3rd pairings?

"He's like Derek Jeter in a lot of ways - good but incredibly overrated."

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Brent:

Sour grapes?

He's not even one of the two top-pairing defensemen on his team when it comes to playing tough minutes.

At this point, Dion Phaneuf is more sizzle than steak. His being a gutless puke is just an added annoyance.

This is so sweet. Watching you guys have a collective heart attack. Phaneuf happens to own you guys.

Stortini? WTF?

Heart attack? Phaneuf "owns" us?

We're calling a spade a spade....or in this case, a pussy a pussy.

No-balls should enjoy his week at the All-Star game. He's guaranteed not to get challenged to drop the gloves there!

If Stortini were to jump Phaneuf, I'd give him a job for the rest of the year.

On that replay, I could swear I saw fuckhead Phaneuf try to kick Stortini.

And yes, Phaneuf in a douche bag.

We're calling a spade a spade....or in this case, a pussy a pussy.

That's right...Phaneuf's the bitch.

Haha...seems to me he does a masterful job at at least one thing: getting under your collective skins. And he doesn't even have to play "hard minutes" to do it. Oh yeah...you're #1 star tonight - "Andy Delmore plus hitting"...DIIOONNN PHANEUF.

BWAHAHAHAA

PS - He's got more goals and points than you're #1 centerman.

Your team is up by four goals with half a period left in the game and some no skill enforcer wants to fight you (an all star d-man), what do you do? Do you take a stupid penalty which would have no positive effect on your team? Or do you just laugh the loser off and wish him good luck back in the minors next week? At least make it somebody worth trading off for (although I can't think of anyone on the greaser's roster to whom that would apply)...

Nice win tonight boys! I've got each of the last two BoA games saved on my PVR and I may just watch them a couple more times during this light hockey week...

Go Flames!

PS: I really wish I could have been at the RATT tonight...

ho-hum
Flames destroy the Oil again...what else is new?
NEXT!
Oilers suck at offence
Roli was horrendous
defence is worse than crap
all adds up to a loss

Isn't Phaneuf a fucking big man? Won't fight, won't fight, won't fight...hey you're not looking, shot to the head.

Ugly fucker.

He was too busy scoring goals, setting up goals, and making life miserable for the Coilers.

GO FLAMES GO!

Man, I love this. All these Oilers fans who stuck through the night in the comments section, and the Flames kids don't show up until the very end. One wonders if they would have shown up at all in they lost.

That's because the "Flames kids" were too busy watching and enjoying the beating they laid on the Soilers instead of whining (like Roloson does) on the comments section

Why did I have to be right!? Why!? Why must I be blessed with such unholy powers!?

And bd: you're welcome to clean my room any time you like. I hate the hell out of cleaning things but looks like you enjoy it just fine. Just bring your own booze. Or raid the boxes of red & white wine in the living room. Whatever.

The Flames are owning the Oil this year and the Nucks are owning the Flames. It's like being the bitch's bitch.

Somebody should do some stat analysis on pussy-face to see if he does a playoff Joe Thornton / Marty Turco with tough opposition.

If I'm Dion Phaneuf, I'm thinking "Who the fuck is Zach Stortini, and why the hell would I fight him?"

I mean seriously, Phaneuf doesn't want to fight some no name punk who has no business picking a fight with him, and you guys are calling him a pussy? Give me a break.

I love Oiler logic. The team whines all week about Boogaard running their players and then when Stortini does the same thing he's praised. Take off the homer glasses for a while and learn a little humility. However, I can't wait to see the next Minny/Oil game.

I don't think anyone was saying that Boogard did anything wrong. The complaints were about the Oilers not fighting back.

To their credit, the Oilers have fought back since then. And the Flames, outside of Phaneuf, did too.

I gotcha... I guess I was just reading into a few of the other comments. Dion has fought back in the past, there just wasn't much of a reason to go last night. Against Anaheim earlier in the year he fought Dustin Penner after Kipper was run over.

I like the fact that the Oilers have Stortini up and that the Flames have Godard up. In the Flames case, it makes all of the team play with more of an edge. You may see similar things with Stortini in the line-up.

Hey Battlers of Alberta.
Hope you guys had a good time up at RATT.
Would have been fun to be there.
Mind you, I might have punted the projector out a window.....
Time for a new one. I start lobbying for it on Monday.

All of the Flamers are overrated - playing the Oilers, they all only play 60 minutes of soft minutes.
Oilers are far better than the Flames, man to man - Oilers players have to play 60 minutes of hard minutes when they go up against the Flamers.
Phaneuf is a pussy for not fighting Sortini because he and the rest of the Flamers had already beaten down the Oilers where it really counts - on the scoreboard.
