Inefficiencies
Tyler is right. I have nothing but time to perform the most meaningless of tasks. Since companies with a paid staff of trained monkeys don't know how to do this, I did it myself. Below are the payroll commitments for each NHL team. I am going to do this by Division, starting with the Atlantic. I will add the Divisions as I finish them. The numbers are supplied by TSN, which is assuming roster spots for some players. Click on each team's link to see what I mean. I did not include buyouts, and the notable free agent names are taken from here. The NHLPA also has a payroll list by team, but it includes minor league players. I am going to just go with TSN's roster assumptions for now.
As you can see, there are already teams whose rosters are ripe for the plucking.
***Update*** If you read the comments, you will see why these numbers are in fact off. But it's the best I could do in light of the fact that nobody--not the NHL, not the NHLPA, and not any media outlets--provides info on contract length and terms.

Great work, Andy.
One question: I understood that, regardless of what the salary of a player was in any given year, his cap figure was based on the average annual salary of the deal. So, for example, Elias' cap figure should be $6 mil, despite his 2006-07 salary being $7.5 mil.
If this is the case, then you can knock $1.5 mil off of the Devils' cap figure for the coming year - which still isn't enough to lock up Gomez, Gionta, and Martin. They really screwed themselves with the Elias signing. Having Malakhov and Mogilny's salaries off the book next year will help, but I just don't see how they're going to keep the aforementioned trio of youngsters until next summer. The only scenario I can see is one where they move Madden and/or Brylin to dump their salaries.
I don't know if that is the case. Someone will have to clarify on that. If it is the case, it may make all this work pointless. It will also make me want to kill everyone involved with the NHL and the media. How about some straight information so that people can analyze things properly? GAH!

Yeah, it's the contract averaged out for the term, regardless of what's actually paid out in a given year.
Roloson is the Oiler example (not that the cap is a problem). 11/3 is the cap hit for all three years.
Tkachuk is the example that's pretty clear on the TSN pages (his cap hit is 2 million more that what they're actually paying him this year).
Either way, the Devils are still screwed. ;-)

So am I wasting my time doing this? I can't even get the real numbers, because no one publishes the length and money for existing contracts. God damn awful. I see from doing the Leafs numbers that you are correct. TSN has him making over 7 million this year. But they are just using the NHLPA numbers. GAH! GAH!

If I was a GM I'd want this all up on my big magnetic board: FA status, contract yrs, cap$ and actual$. You could have a lot of fun.
Buffalo is looking very, um, mellow. Or asleep. Should someone wake them?

You can take Spacek off of the Oilers' "unsigned" list - he's gone. Global reported he signed with another team today but didn't say which one.

Buffalo's situation is just incredible. I can't see how they would be in a position to even start kicking UFA tires until August. Potential RFA offer sheets could come in some of these guys if Regier doesn't get these guys signed soon.
And what the hell is Lou doing? Again.
its truly amazing. what would happen to teams who cannot sign their RFA's? do they lose their rights?
I know that everyone is worried about our D, but I see so many teams that will be very thin in their bottom 6 forwards. Mayhaps we can exploit that?

quibble with the numbers and players but the point is clear - there are a lot of teams in big trouble already
Lowe will be able to get the needed Dman or 2 and I believe it won't cost him a lot
How would Brian Rafalski look in an Oiler uni? Jersey is screwed - they have 9M committed to 3 guys who probably won't play a game for them this year.

This is just what Regier is like. He moves very very slowly every year. It's not even surprising at this point really. A lot of Buffalo players could go to arbitration and get big raises so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a bunch of them choosing that option.
I assume you know by now that Laraque's no longer an Oiler UFA and is now, in fact, an ex-Oiler with the Coyotes.
But if you hadn't, you do now. ;)
It's fricking frustrating trying to find contract values - even for past seasons. I spent a fair bit of time digging 'em up when I was looking at salaries of Cup winners, and wound up having to average a chunk of them just to guess I had something reasonably close.

Heard on the radio today (Bob Stauffer on Team1260) that the Oilers have no intention of signing any RFAs. Too bad really, considering the corner some of the GMs have backed into...

So I guess we're waiting for Martin, Rafalski and Stuart to fall somewhere? I'd love to have Tallinder but you'd have to give up something really good to get him,.
