Arena Press Conference

The Edmonton Oilers and the Katz Group will hold a press conference Monday morning at Rexall Place with an update about the proposed downtown arena development.
--Edmonton Journal

This should be interesting.

***Update*** Nope. Not interesting at all. It was a press conference about nothing.

Over or under: three hundred million public dollars.

(My word verification: 'gulked'. As in "the Edmonton city council gulked taxpayers out of a billion of their dollars.")

Good game. I'll say over. $800 million. Plus the normal overruns that we won't hear about until much later, of course.

Thanks for keeping up with all the new arena info, Andy. I'm looking forward to seeing what is announced at this conference and your reaction.

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks, Dave. And thanks for alerting me to the presser. I'm working on a background post now, which I will have up by tomorrow. Me, Matt and the readers have covered so much of this stuff already, I thought it would be helpful to have something that newcomers could go through. Saves me the effort of saying all of it over again, too. And I'm sure I'll have some reaction to the press conference tomorrow. :)

I'll underbid Andy slightly. $650M.

I'm sure we'll also hear some of the hard-hitting questions we have come to expect from local media.

the only thing missing from today's presser was LaForge running out to the strains of James Brown's "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing"…

Wow. Talk about underwhelming.

Man! I bet you guys can't wait to reap the rewards of a REVITALIZED DOWNTOWN. Does this mean restaurants will have to stay open past 10 during the week?

man, i'd kill for a press conference with SUBSTANCE for a change. when was the last time this team had one?

they didn't need media there today either. LaForge could have just fielded questions from himself:

Patrick LaForge: "Patrick, would you say the greatest opportunity for Edmonton lies in developing a new facility that will revitalize our downtown and add to the excitement that is just starting to build in our core? Also, on a personal note, i love the jazz beard thingy."

Patrick LaForge: "Why thank you, Patrick. And yes, the greatest opportunity for Edmonton lies in developing a new facility that will revitalize our downtown and add to the excitement that is just starting to build in our core. Great question, Patrick."

Really, the press conference would have been much better if Laforge had walked to the microphone, yelled "WORLD! CLASS! CITY!" and then left.

Based on the current plan (30% private funding), let's go with an even half-billion.

Now watch, some jackass will come in and bid one dollar and beat us all by the Price is Right rules.
