Quarter Pole
At left is the traditional BoA apples-to-apples look at the first 20 games of the season. Especially early on, it can be hard to divine exactly where teams sit just by looking at the Standings, because even a fairly small difference in GP is a largish percentage difference.As well, I track the 2nd/3rd/4th quarters, so we can get an apples-to-apples look at who is improving, and most interestingly (to me), who is in decent position later in the season but entirely on the strength of their early record. Thoughts on the first quarter:
- The best team right now in each conference seems clear enough, though I'd like to point out again that for all the chatter about a New Era in San Jose, their 33 points is in fact 5 fewer than they earned in the 4th quarter last season. They deserve snaps, absolutely, but it is unnecessary and unwise to give them based on comparisons to Winter/Spring '08.
- You'll note that fully ten WC teams have a negative goal differential, and only five have a positive one, which is the first time that's happened since I started tracking this (I'm pretty sure).
- No team's record really stands out as dubious or inappropriate based on goal differential, although if you had to pick one I suppose it would be the Flames. Big reason: they played 3 road games vs. those top 5 WC teams. Combined score in those 3 games: Flames 2, Opponent 18.
I had no idea that Calgary's season had been quite so short on drama. Go Flames.

Also weird: the WC as a whole is +1.
Yeah, it doesn't quite come out to zero because there are a few games that "count" for one team but not another. For example, DET v CGY was the Wings' 20th (included in these numbers) and the Flames' 21st (not).
