Dept. of Corrections

Courtesy of the Edmonton Journal, who obviously got it from the Edmonton Oilers.

Memo to all parties: It's "Alternate Captain." For shame.

Carry on.

Comments:

Actually, I have one more question: Is it a good idea to have two guys who played a total of 51 games last year as a Captain and Alternate Captain?

Just throwing that out there.

I'll add another one - why are Hemsky and Horcoff both home alternates when they're joined at the hip?

I still can't believe Moreau is the captain at all. Horcoff, with Jason Smith, starting with the Smyth trade, had to do about 6 weeks straight of unbelievably awkward and uncomfortable media scrums. The org used those guys like human shields. Meanwhile, Moreau was doing lat pulldowns or drinking a smoothie somewhere.

If Bobbie-Lou can be Captain in Vancouver, anything is possibe. I think we should just name Joey Moss captain and be done with it.

Horcoff will wear the 'C' for the Oil before too long.

To me the obvious choice for captain was Staios, but it's not like they're going to strip Moreau now...

Moreau wearing the C is just an unhealthy by-product of having a 2 million dollar 4th line LW.

He and Staios will be shipped out over the next 18 months, and this will become Shawn Horcoff's team. In due time, in due time....he's going to be Brind'Amour while Gagner plays the role of Eric Staal.

Right down to the Cup presentation, or so we can all hope.

I've played hockey for a good 15 years, and we've always used the term Assistant. Cannot believe I'm the only one.

"In due time, in due time....he's going to be Brind'Amour while Gagner plays the role of Eric Staal."

Horcoff is bang on and should be comparable to Brindamour. Gagner to Stall??? Gagner to Comrie is more fair. Both are tiny, don't skate well and are gonna always be overmatched cause of there size.

Eric Stall. LOL...

I just came across your blog and read a few posts... I can't believe how extensive this is! You guys have done a phenomenal job keeping up on the battle of Alberta - great work!

I'm sure you aren't the only one, but I'm also sure you'd all be wrong. See Rule 14 of the NHL Rulebook:

In addition, if the permanent Captain is not on the ice, Alternate Captains (not more than two) shall be accorded the privileges of the Captain. Alternate Captains shall wear the letter "A" approximately three inches (3") in height and in contrasting color, in a conspicuous position on the front of their sweaters.

(NOTE) Only when the captain is not in uniform, the Coach shall have the right to designate three Alternate Captains. This must be done prior to the start of the game.

It's a common mistake that drives me crazy.

Oh, and the Journal got it wrong again today. Hockey writer Joanne Ireland, too. Tsk. Tsk.

Fun useless fact:
The NHL allows 1 Captain, 2 Alternates; or 3 Alternates. IIHF/Hockey Canada allows 1 Captain, 3 Alternates. Goaltenders are not allowed the priviledge of being a Captain or Alternate (or taking faceoffs, penalty shots, or playing the puck on the attacking side of centre ice).

Yes, I just took this year's referee certification clinic.
/nerd

You're all wrong. It's "Assistant to the Captain".

this is one of those things that bugs the hell out of me, too...

like when people pronounce "nuclear" as "nucular..."

*shivers*

Man, I was just going to make that joke.

Well, at least Souray has shown leadership in the fashion department, at least according to the "best dressed Oiler" designation awarded to him by his teammates.

Back in the day, I played hockey with a guy who taped an "A" on his jersey and told us it stood for "AWESOME." I always thought this was better than alternate, or assistant, or whatever. BTW, besides Iggy and Reggie, who has the other letter in Calgary this year?

Flames send down Boyd? wtf

Gagner to Comrie is more fair.

Stupid comparison.

Gagner played in the NHL at age 18 and scored 49 points. Comrie didn't make the league until age 20.

Gagner's a lot closer to the Eric Staal class of player (in terms of upside) than some fans of rival teams (i.e. the Canucks) want to admit.

Heh.... they've sinced changed the oilers site (on the main page, anyway) to read "alternate captain".

smooth....

Gagner is about 15 cms shorter and 25 pounds lighter than Stall. Not much to compare between a blazing fast power forward and a smallish average skating playmaking passer. Nice try though, Gagner might pass Comrie, but they are comparable in size, skill and craftiness.

And Hbomb, dont take things to serious. You dont have to defend every Oiler from comments. Gagner might pop 90 points and carry the team for the next 10 years, and he might not. Just chill out and relax :)

Most of the time, that's easy to do, but when someone says something as ridiculous/stupid as Gagner being comparable to a mediocre 2nd line center in Mike Comrie, that deserves a verbal bitch-slapping.

Outside of physical stature, there is NO comparison between Mike Comrie and Sam Gagner. Yes, Staal's a physical specimen (who I was happy to grab with a 17th overall pick in my draft last night). But size is NOT everything.

Try this on for size: Staal scored 31 points as an 18 year old in the NHL. In his 3rd year, he was a 100 point player.

Gagner last year? 49 points at age 18. Now this does not guarantee anything in terms of him being a point-per-game player in the next 2 seasons, and we've got nothing to go off of in terms of amount of ice time and difficulty of minutes, but that kind of production at that age is a clear indicator of an absolute blue-chip youngster.

In other words, like Eric Staal in 2003.....the Mike Comrie comparison, frankly, is mis-informed and unintelligent. Coming from a Canucks fan, I'm honestly not surprised in the least....

Well, at least Souray has shown leadership in the fashion department, at least according to the "best dressed Oiler" designation awarded to him by his teammates.

Does this give him a leg up in the Hot Off?

Also with the Comrie comparison:

Sam's Dad actually played some decent hockey and passed on both a head for the game and a decent amount of character to his son with the breakout season as an 18 year old. And to my knowledge does NOT go into the Oilers locker room demanding to know why his son is not playing more, like the "hockey dad" of your nightmares.

Mr. Comrie - not so much.

methinks Sam stole anonymous' girlfriend.
