Blogiversary

It was three years ago today that we started up this here weblog, with a take on Mark Messier's retirement announcement. I can't believe that I forgot to mention my favourite moment in his career, that being (of course) when he was left off of the '98 Olympic team to the horror of pundits across the country.

It's been a lot of fun, and still is. In late August, I could not have cared less about hockey, but I'm suddenly ultra-psyched about the upcoming season. I'm looking forward to having both Grabia and Sacamano piping in for the Oilers. I'm looking forward to scheduling my (evening) life around hockey telecasts, and seeing how the revamped and rebalanced Flames forward corps makes out. I'm looking forward to seeing at least a couple of the Oilers' promising young guns stall out, or better, run backwards and blow kisses. About the only thing I'm not looking forward to is Charles F. Simmer.

Thanks to all of our readers; extra thanks to those of you who get into the Comments. Hope you all stick around for another season.

Comments:

Happy Birthday! Now get to work on that potty training, you really don't have any excuse anymore...

Congrats on the first three years and here's to the next three and then some.

You guys are my favourite!

Happy birthday.

Congrats.

I hope you guys continue writing indefinitely.

Happy bday. Dont get "rebalanced" confuse with "more balanced".

I can't believe that I forgot to mention my favourite moment in his career, that being (of course) when he was left off of the '98 Olympic team to the horror of pundits across the country.

Hey. Don't forget the part where new captain Eric Lindros filled in for Messier's absence by leading Canada to a gold medal, thus proving that all the pundits were completely wrong!

Oh, and congrats on the anniversary. Read your blog every day.

Congrats guys, thanks for helping start this trend for the rest of us.

So you say it's your birthday?
Well, it's my birthday, too, yeah
So you say it's your birthday?
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy birthday to you

(It really is my birthday, too. Yay for all of us!)

Happy Birthday! Thanks for continuing to be such a good read that I follow the Oilers now despite not being a fan.

I've said it before (and it applies to a lot of people) and I'll say it again:

My blog doesn't exist without you three.

Now whether that's good or bad is an entirely different story ;)

Long-time commenter, first time reader.

Happy birthday, gents, and you too, Doogie.

Should be an exciting year four.

Happy Birthday Battle of Alberta.

Three years shows real commitment.

And thanks for your link to the Messier piece. Of course, I'm anxiously awaiting your piece on new NHL thugs who deserve massive and repeated suspensions, such as Robyn Regehr, the rat bastard.

Congrats, love the site.

It appears you should crack the million mark for site visits some time this season. Keep up the good work.

@Staples: Is that Howie Morenz in your avatar? I approve.

Yes, it's Howie.

The great Canadian hockey tragedy, in my mind.

Morenz so loved the game that when he could no longer play -- after he broke his leg in a game -- he died of a broken heart.

Actually, Morenz died of an untreated infection. I don't remember the exact details just now, but I believe it was something the doctor was going to get to in the morning, but he didn't last that long. The family categorically denied the "broken heart" angle, though it does make a nice story.

The funeral that the Forum is one of those quintessential Canadian hockey moments, though.

I know the facts, but damn them all anyway. I'm sticking with the Morenz myth, the "broken heart" angle.

Hell, at one time, I was working on a novel with that story at its core, so I can't change now.

Happy birthday... (pauses, backs up, glances at blog title) Bottle of Albreta.

I know it must be intimidating to get congratulations from a big blogger like me, but don't worry, you guys will make it someday.

Happy birthday, guys! You're among the best.

@Staples: Fair enough. Truthfully, I only learned that last year. Can't even remember what I was reading now; probably something that tied in with Boom-Boom's then-recent death (he being Morenz's son-in-law). Incidentally, CBC remain flaming douches to this day for not airing Boom-Boom's sweater ceremony on the day he died.

Happy B'day, BoA and D2K!

Poetry aside, I'm with Doogie all the way on the Geooffrion scandal, and with Alan on the Bobby Clarke-induced leadership void on Team Nagano. What a fucking blunder. To think Shame Corson wound up on that team ... bleah!

Congrats guys. Good to see you'll be going strong as always

Happy birthday boys.

I love this blog.

I love you both.

Big congrats guys! Love to read the stuff here. It's well thought out and interesting. I really appreciate all the time it must take to do it.

You've wasted a lot of my employer's time over the last 3 years.

Keep up the good work.

I've never commented before, but I have to pipe up! Happy birthday, BoA. You guys are a lot of fun to read. Keep up the great work!

Happy birthday, BoA! (Like a couple others here, I've never posted here before but wanted to chime in for this.) Keep up the good work.
