Before this slips too far into the past

Flames Dominate Oil Country
Kinda Like 2004

Yes, the Flames won the inaugral Oil Country Rookie Tournament, beating the Oiler utes 1-0 on Sunday evening and then the Canucks rooks 6-3. The thing wrapped up Tuesday with Van over Edm 5-3.

After the 2nd Flames game on Monday, the biggest buzz seems to be about Backlund (didn't knock anyone out with his flair, but managed to make a big impression nonetheless) and John Negrin. Negrin is a 19-year-old Kootenay Ice defenseman, who has in 15 months managed to go from 3rd round pick to presumptive 2009/10 big leaguer.

With those notes out of the way, we can go back to "reality", where the Oilers have an embarrassment of riches in the pipeline and Sutter has drafted the Flames into the toilet. As I understand it.

Tomorrow is fitness testing day, then Saturday is the first day of Flames training camp and Atco Presents Edmonton Oilers Training Camp. Go Flames.

Comments:

matt,

you must have been the kid who always had to poke a stick into the hornet's nest. i should also note that the the kid in my school who did that happened to be in grade 5 at the age of 13. are you sure your name isn't tony?

Meh.

If you want to crow about a bunch of kids -- most of who have never and will never get a regular gig in the NHL -- then knock yourself out.

We don't concern ourselves with such trivia.

Exactly. Silly Matt - don't you know that a team's pre-season record is what matters?

No way. Atco presents Edmonton Oilers training camp. Really?

How long before naming rights are sold to sections in The Rexall Pharmacy?

"Wanna go with me to the game tonight?"

"Depends. Where are your seats?"

"Fifth row. The Brick Furniture Warehouse Income Trust section."

"Awesome. I'm in."

There already is a Molson Canadian area, no?

Yeah, if there's one fanbase that's phlegmatic about its up-and-cummers, it's the Oilers fanbase. HOONNNNNKKKK!!! If there was a counter for "number of words written about Rob Schremp", it would look something like this U.S. debt clock, and rise about as fast too.

And Art, I am not making that up.

At the urging of many contributors of the Oilogosphere, I have taken the plunge and made the first baby steps in starting my own blog. Oil Droppings can be found at:

First posts about the current batch of oilers prospects are up. The blogroll is still under development, but BoA made the first cut as one of the sites I visit most frequently. A cross-link would be greatly appreciated.

You're all welcome to visit any time. I look forward to hosting some stimulating hockey talk on Oil Droppings.

Really, the whole point of the rookie camp is to see what each player can do. Part of the Oil's focus was on finding a thug to play on the 4th line. I don't really see this game as much of a "bragging right" for either team. If you watched the game (in all of it's choppy glory), it was actually filled with some pretty sloppy play and definitely not anything to get all excited about.

7:29 a.m.? Bit early to be hitting the sauce, dontcha think Fenwick?

"Dominate" is a pretty strong term for a one goal game don't you think? Must have been a HUUUGE goal. Got any stats to verify that dominating goal? ;)

Yeah, if there's one fanbase that's phlegmatic about its up-and-comers, it's the Oilers fanbase.

Bruce, I wish you nothing but the best with your blog, but your timing could use some work.

Cause we all know the best way to judge individual talents is the score of a hockey game. One in which the three best of one side aren't invited.

Personally, I would watch those Flames. They are grossly under-rated.
