Who's Next?

Okay, the hated rival is out, the arrogant p**ck who skipped town is shopping on Rodeo Drive, and most of the Canadian teams are gone. So who's left to cheer against?

Calgary Flames
Burke Prongers
Ottawa Senators
Vancouver Canucks
Carolina Hurricanes
Toronto Maple Leafs
Minnesota Wild

I think it's pretty easy. Here's my list of who I want gone.

Dallas Stars
San Jose Sharks
Montreal Canadiens
Detroit Red Wings
Philadelphia Zoolanders

I'd be fine with a Ryan Smyth vs. Georges Laraque final. Anyone else? Crosby? Here's the schedule for the conference semi-finals.

Comments:

the only team i'm ok with on the remaining list is SJ

on a pronger-rant tangent...
burke has a personal situation (wife/tv, kids in the east) that would be helped by asking the team he is under contract with to let him go to another city... but decides to honour his contract.
On the team he's sticking with, a guy making $6+/yr, who after one year, decided go back on a commitment he made due to personal reasons and ask for a trade.
I was sure the burke and pronger were two (talented) jerk-peas in a jerk-pod. Now it seems like like burke has skipped some meetings of their jerk club.
Sorry, still bitter... but interesting, no?

I'm only cheering for Montreal from now on. I hate the rest. HATE!

Is it October yet?

I would like San Jose to win the Stanley. Thank you.

I am with Lowetide, I am supporting the Sharks.

That being said:

- Smyth winning a cup would be a nice sight, although somewhat gut-wrenching that it's not in Oiler colors.

- I appreciate the talents of Brad Richards, Sergei Zubov and Steve Ott

- How can you not like Lidstrom and Zetterberg?

- Pittsburgh is a fantastic squad

- Sean Avery hoisting the Stanley Cup would be kind of funny.

Seeing that floating turd Lupul win the Cup or have to listen to the gloating of fans of the Habs for six months would be too much to bear. Therefore, anyone but Philly or Cuntreal, please!

I've had a soft spot for the Habs for a long time, ever since I wrote a story based on my exploits with them in a hockey simulator (God, don't ask). So I have to cheer for them.

I'm also feeling a certain... disconcerting affection for the Stars. They played a great, gritty series to vanquish the Ducks (and I wanted them to go out even more than the Flames; Flames fans I usually respect, but everything about the Ducks is pure evil). They have an attractive style of play. Most of the real dickwads - Hatcher, Nieuwendyk, Belfour, Hitchcock - from those playoff days are long gone. As long as Modano's still playing they'll never have my respect, but still...

I'm with Dennis' soon to be voiced opinion that les Cuntreal Scabitants and their fans are insufferable when winning, and I want no part of it.

The Roy/Price comparisons would be enough for me to fall on my sword.

p.s. A Sharks-Rangers or Pens final would suit me fine.

Seeing the Wings crush the Avs, Sharks, and Crosbys in 12 games would suit me just fine.

Seriously, you want to see Smyth and Sakic bouncing the Cup back and forth like two dudes working a medicine ball? No fucking thanks. I don't think there are any hard choices in the conference semis.

Can't believe that Habs and Stars aren't at the top of everyone's lists.

Maybe it's just a geographical thing -- though you guys in Alberta Must have grown up with guys who were Habs fans because their dad cheered for them -- but there's nothing more hateful than a Habs fan when they're winning. Leaves fans are cocky and happy but they always feel like disaster is right around the corner.

On the other hand, 24 cups and a sense of entitlement and dummies wearing their jerseys to the mall who don't know more than three players. It's to the point now where I don't even talk hockey with fellows who aren't ardent followers. I mean I wouldn't try and talk Dean Koontz novels with one his fans because I don't read Dean Koontz.

And so on;)

So you get Habs fans and it's the worst of all situations. You get guys with guts saying things like, "I think they're really good do it this year!!!"

Can't believe there's not more Habs hatred around here. Just watch those games and listen to the stupid chants and how they play all the U2 songs.

Add me to the list of those who want the Sharks to win the Cup this year.

A Sharks Rangers final would be my choice now as I'm the ONLY person in my office playoff pool to pick any Rangers - it would all but guarantee me a few hundred bucks of my co-workers money.

Oddly enough, my work verification is JGGSHRK....I'm taking this as a sign that JaGr will meet the SHaRKs in the finals....what should I buy with my winnings?.....

I'm with you all the way on the habs thing dennis....my step dad mentoned "his Habs" on the phone the other day and if you could throw punches via satellite it would have come to that, after I mentioned that I'm pretty sure they haven't been "his habs" since about 1994.

Pittsburgh Crosby's are at the top of my shit list, followed by Philly. Actually fuck Pennsylvania altogether, the Clinton-voting bastards. Dallas? San Jose? Why?That leaves three of the o.g. 6 and Detroit is just impossible to cheer for and the Rangers have that d-bag ______ (just pick one), so that leaves the Habs as champs and that's just fine. 12 for 25 motherfuckers. See you at the SAQ. I'll be the guy throwing the trash can through the window.

If the Habs do win, they'll keep their decade achievement going. They've won a Cup in every decade since the 20's. I don't want that at all. I really find every team other than Colorado unpalatable.

Seriously, you want to see Smyth and Sakic bouncing the Cup back and forth like two dudes working a medicine ball?

Yes, because I'd like to see a guy who gave his everything to this city--including his front teeth--win a Stanley Cup. I actually can't think of anything I'd rather see more these playoffs than Ryan Smyth holding the Stanley Cup.

Go Smytty! Get your Stanley ...

Albertan Habs fan checking in and vaguely amused, if somewhat confused, by all the vitriol. It's not like the Habs have been a dominant team since Sam Pollock left 30 years ago.

And it's from my mom's side. She's a born and raised Montrealer.

Go fuck yourself

I don't give a fuck about Ryan Smyth anymore. He got his payday, he can get bounced a few more times before he wins his cup.

Let's go Sharks. You've earned my adoration by pissing on the Falmes. Plus, we beat you quite a bit, so you don't piss me off.

Also, Pittsburgh. Malkin and Sykora (the guy who was willing to take a pay cut for us next year) make me happy. And I don't hate Crosby.

Let me guess, you were one of those d-bags who started wearing a Kings jersey around town after Gretzky got traded.

And by the way: "gave his everything"? Who are you, Gerry Goffin? Do you write this stuff in between paragraphs of your latest Harlequin novel?

Gerry Goffin. That was funny.

I'd be happy with a Habs - Smytty final, though only because of Smytty and nothing to do with any of the other Avs.

I wish there was a way for both SJ and Dallas to eliminate each other at once. I hate Dallas, and I still want to see them beat San Jose, and it's purely because of how annoying the FSN Sharks broadcasters are.

I really don't get all the Habs hate; any city that's willing to start burning shit after round one is okay in my books. What did Ottawa do after their first-round victory, untuck their bed sheets?

Also, Smytty or no Smytty, there's no way I can ever cheer for an Avs team that has Sakic and Forsberg on it.

I wish there was a way for both SJ and Dallas to eliminate each other at once.

That's when I start cheering for an asteroid strike during game one. :)

Playoff OT winners by Zoolander Lupul - 2

Playoff OT winners by everyone who has ever posted on this blog combined - 0

Lupul for Con Smythe

with the flames and the ducks eliminated, it's pretty much smooth sailing from here on out. just going to sit back, relax and enjoy the playoffs. no need to stress or worry. GO ANYONE!!!

On a different note: why the asterisks in "prick?" I know this blog isn't the cesspool of filth and depravity in the way that CinO, Mirtle and others are, but why pull punches, especially with CFP?

You always have a soft spot for the team that won it all teh first year you cared. For me, that's the Habs. And even though they ebat my team, I like the Sharks because I saw a couple of games in the Shark Tank once and the people were really nice.

Go Sharks. Go Habs.

Marleau earned my respect so it wouldn't be bad to see the Sharks in the final. I don't care about the Rangers so if they make it to the finals that's ok. Crosby can wait until after Iginla wins his cup. My mean side would like to see the Habs loose in G7 so Montreal fans can experience what Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa fans went through.

Let me guess, you were one of those d-bags who started wearing a Kings jersey around town after Gretzky got traded.

No, but neither am I one of those d-bags who is going to forget a guys years of service to a team just because he's wearing a different jersey. Hate on Smytty all you want. I'm fine sticking with him.

You always have a soft spot for the team that won it all teh first year you cared.

Not necessarily. The first year I cared was 1963; the Leafs were the big team in my family, and they won it all from 1962-64. I stuck with them through the '70s but decision time came in 1979 when the home town Oilers entered the NHL.

By then Harold Ballard and his merry band of pervs had gained control of Maple Leaf Gardens, Ballard cheaped out on keeping his talent, and then tried to stiff the three Canadian WHA teams during the merger, so the choice was easy. Later the C(for Centreoftheuniverse)BC started to broadcast the league as if there was only one club anybody should know or care about, and then the Leafs threw big market $$$ at Curti$ Jo$eph and managed to collect Shame Corson and Gary Roberts and Darcy Tucker and Tie Domi and various other scumbags all at once, and over that long sequence of events my feelings toward the team evolved from "my favourite team" to "my Dad's favourite team" to "I fucking hate these assholes".

I'd have no problem with Smyth winning a Cup; I'm not openly cheering for the Avs to win but I'd be happy for him if he did.

Fuck, the guy had a major right to be pissed off that Lowe decided to pay everyone else before him so if he walked at the last second over a few hundred K -- as opposed to believing that Lowe was the dummy -- then that's fine with me.

Doogie: you keep dogging me on my Habs hatred so, and I hate being old enough that I'm able to break this out;), I guess I can just tell you that you aren't old enough to get in.

Saturday nights with dick irvin have scarred me.

Saturday nights with dick irvin have scarred me.

Dennis: At least Dick Irvin had the team to back him up. That's more than Jim Hughson ever had.

Not sure which is worse.

I didn't think I was "dogging," as such, but hey, fair enough, though I doubt even if I was ten (I'm guessing here) years older, it'd change much. ;) I guess it's like growing up in the early and mid 90s following the Habs, and having CBC be a Norris Division cesspool, forcing you to watch nearly every game in a foreign language. Or not being able to watch the Oilers because all your "local" channels are out of Calgary. (Though I always liked Ed Whalen -- weird.)
