Oilers Sign Nilsson
Busy day for Kevin Lowe. In addition to signing Tom Gilbert, the Oilers have signed Robert Nilsson for three years, $5.5 million dollars. That's $1,833,333 per. Here are the Oilers current cap hit numbers, and significant free agents, using NHLSCAP and NHL Numbers. The salary cap is expected to be around $56.3 million next year, with a floor of $40 million.

So there's around $14 million to play with after these two signings, and Pitkanen, Stoll, Grebeshkov, Reasoner, Pouliot, Stortini and odds and ends left to sign. Doable? We'll see, but Pitkanen could be gone.

Now that's a contract! Less than $2 million for a guy who you can call our second-line winger almost in pen for next year, a guy who's on the upswing, and three years. I believe that takes him into unrestricted free agency afterwards but I don't begrudge him it.
Good for Mini-Magic. Better for the Oilers. I'm almost inclined to call that a "dad's a scout discount".
Makes me wonder if he saw Gilbert's deal before he signed. I would have been like, "whoa, wait a minute here!"
Gilbert's includes some juicy UFA years so that inflates it I'm sure. Gilbert must like it here and Lowe must have a man crush. And he's talking about living with the kids again. 25 years old, lives in a frat house, sitting on a $24 Mill contract, playing hockey 7-9 months a year. In related news I won a free cookie on my Timmy's cup today. Hooray!

Well Gilbert can now afford to buy Rock Band to go with his Guitar Hero! Rock on!!

Nilsson: "Well, they're excited about the future. They like the synergy all us young players, and... wait a minute. Is that a new grill up in your mouth? What are those, zircodians?
Gilbert: "Oh well, that's the news, bro! I signed a 24 million dollar extension! Can you believe it!?!?
