A non-hockey note to the Expats

Last night, on Hockey Night in Canada, Ron MacLean referenced this great little post by Sacamano on THAT DAY. As Sac stated, THAT DAY is "that Magical Day when it seems that the whole city collectively recognizes that Winter has ended." Edmontonians all know that day. In fact, as MacLean noted, Albertans all know that day. Why do I bring this up, you may ask? Well, Edmonton got some blessedly warm weather this weekend, with temperatures reaching 25° celsius yesterday afternoon. The parks were full (Hawrelak was bumpin', yo), and people were out jogging and riding their bikes. Short shorts were everywhere, along with empty Mac's Froster cups. Today? Snow, and 3°. Thats how it is in the City of Champs. We get THAT DAY, but we also get THAT DAY.

Comments:

it was definitely that day yesterday. walked around the neighborhood and there were people everywhere.

We didn't get nearly so vicious a swing down south. 23 yesterday, sunny and 9 today. But if I didn't have to get my barbecue inspected because it's been out of commission for so long, I'd have been making me some burgers. Fanfuckingtastic.

Sunday was That Day, no question about it. This looks like one of those years we vault straight from winter to summer.

This is how we roll in Edmonton! Hot one day and snow the next. Bring it on!

It's warmed up to about 7 now, and the snow is gone. But it's still an 18 degree drop from this time yesterday. And if I wait an hour...who knows?

We had That Day in Victoria on Saturday. Gorgeous sun everywhere, blessed heat with just enough wind to keep you from catching fire.

And then we had That Other Day on Sunday, when it was slightly overcast.

...what?

You punks know nothing of freaky weather. Try living in Winterpeg. When you get 9 inches of fresh mountain powder on the 9th of May, about one month after the next most recent snowfall, come back and talk to me.

We got your day also this weekend. It was so nice on Sunday in fact, I was able to dust off the trusty rollerblades and cool down after a hectic day at work by rolling into Assiniboine Park from my house.

Sigh. I love That Day. I've been away from Edmonton for five years and That Day is always special.

When you get 9 inches of fresh mountain powder on the 9th of May, about one month after the next most recent snowfall, come back and talk to me.

I seem to remember around 2001 or so, shortly after I moved here, we had one stretch of about fifteen or sixteen consecutive months with some sort of snowfall.

Yes, even August. That was fucking hilarious.
