AND THE CROWD GOES WILD
Oh, baby. Was that ever spectacular. I'm absolutely revving, so I'm going to pretend I'm subdued, and bring up two reasons to simmer down (to be clear, there is >>>2 reasons to be psyched right now). One is superstitious, one is -- wrong word maybe -- serious.
1) By my count, the last 6 playoff series the Flames have been in were tied 2-2 after Game 4.
2) Joe Thornton is not a gutless, soft wuss who turns into a pumpkin come playoff time. (As for Brian Campbell, he might be; I'm really not familiar with his play and he certainly hasn't impressed thus far.)
This isn't a phony reverse jinx, or preventative karma, or what have you. I absolutely do not believe that there is something about Joe Thornton or his game that means he'll never be successful in the playoffs. As damning as the clip of the GWG was to Campbell (Hrudey: "He needs to be a lot more serious about preventing goals"), there's a clip from the final minute that I thought looked good on Thornton.
It's the same play where Lombardi got down and blocked the pass from the corner out to the slot. You know why this was an important block? Because Joe Thornton had just gotten position on Robyn Regehr by winning a physical confrontation. Sorry, but no one who approaches a battle with Regehr half-assedly, or without really wanting to win it, ever wins it. Thornton got open in the slot with maybe a minute left down one.
Anyway, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, Go Flames.

Comments:
You weren't impressed by Campbell's Spin-O-Rama turnover in the final minute, in his own end that almost led to empty netter? He spun completely around!
Potentially the best playoff game I have ever been to. That said, why is Tanguay so useless? Oh ya, and
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
CJ:
red mile is a-buzzin'.... it's not crazy crazy but there's a lot of honking and a lot of hootin' and hollerin'.... some jackass did a peelout infront of the ship and (like duh) got pulled over... apparently he had open alcohol in his ride so the zillions of coppers at hand were writing him up.
otherwise, fairly tame.

I hereby christen that move "the [Andre] Savardian Spin-o-Rama".
By the way, my new prediction is "Falmes in four". Yes, the Sharks are going to find a way to blow the game that they already won.
As Matt said earlier in the season, "If I woke up this morning with my face stapled to the carpet, I would not be more surprised than I am right now". Thats how surprised I was last night that we came back.
Amazing comeback. Now they need to do that whole foot on the throat thing that Hrudey was talking about and win the next one.
can we rename phaneuf "the goal watcher"? it seems that no matter who scores on either team, he always has a front row seat.
ps. epic comeback. i feel sick. if joe thornton was russian, don cherry would spend hours on coach's corner calling him a loser.
while watching highlights last night, i noticed that Mark Savard of Boston (scored OT winner) was wearing a HARD HAT.
next season, look for the Bruins to present the All Business Tie. then maybe team haircuts.

Hear hear, Heed. Despite a litany of bad results when the games really matter, Thornton figures if he plays his game it doesn't matter what the other guys do, and doesn't prepare for them at all ... I've heard him interviewed several times on the subject, including before this series, and he strikes me as not just unprepared, but unprofessional. Didn't anybody teach him to respect his opponent?
Or as San Jose's (ahem) Russian goalie put it:
"We have to show that we are not a bunch of boys, we're a bunch of mens out here, so that's what it's going to take" -- Evgeni Nabokov
Mark Savard of Boston was wearing a HARD HAT.
bottom line: ference and kobasew couldn't let that one die....
as a fan of the oilers, i am really enjoying the playoffs this year. i can honestly say that i watched 10 full games over the weekend. is this normal? my wife only watched 6...she's obviously not a true fan. hockey is best watched when there is no emotinal attachment. i watch games without care and just enjoy the ride. highlights of the weekend:
1) seeing ovechkin hit everything with a philly jersey on in the last 2 minutes of the series opener.
2) seeing tim thomas of the bruins get a well deserved win. the guy looks like he should be beside drinking beer watching the game not actually playing in it.
3) seeing anaheim self destruct knowing full well that burke mortgaged the future of his team for this steaming pile of crap they call a team. i feel so dirty cheering for the stars but sometimes you do what you have to do.
4) realizing that marleau is twice the hockey player that big joe will ever dream of being. i mean even the flames fans have to admit it takes serious cajones to come back after two huge hits and still play to win.
2) seeing tim thomas of the bruins get a well deserved win. the guy looks like he should be beside drinking beer watching the game not actually playing in it.
Heed: just this very weekend I said to my wife that Tim Thomas has a lot of Gump Worsley in him.
