Vision in a Dream

"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree"

Good to see the City of Edmonton is now considering spending $200,000 on a collapsable, geodesic dome for Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton. The rationale for spending this money: the City already spent $12 million dollars to pave over the grass in the Square in 2004. Apparently, way back in 2004, no one knew that it gets cold in Edmonton, so the solution (obviously!) is to spend even more public money on upgrades.

Sadly, Dr. Pangloss Cason, a professor of thermal mechanics at Thunderbay-ten-Tronckh School, and noted expert on downtown-core-community-upgrader-awesomeness projects, was unavailable for comment. Doesn't matter, though. Giuseppe Albi, general manager of Events Edmonton, convinced me with this line: “At the very least, people could go there and look at it – have their picture taken next to it.” Sign me up!

Winston Churchill Square?
more like
Adolf Hitler Plaza

After dark, lights could be projected outward from inside the building, he said. A concept photo released today shows the dome emitting a blue light, with people lining up to get in.

Well, if thats all it takes, somebody get their act together and make up a concept photo of the downtown arena with nobody lining up to get in, and city officials being hung in public for the waste of tax dollars. If a concept photo predicts something, it has to come true!

From across the water on Saturday, I caught my first sight of the impressive Canucks blue/green light beam that projects above The Garage on game nights.
I hadn't realized until I saw that light how boring, pedestrian, backwardsville and provincial Vancouver was.
Edmonton would be crazy not to build a laser-Floyd-emitting plastic dome for downtown.

...considering spending $200,000 on a collapsable, geodesic dome for Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton...

And your problem is what exactly?

And your problem is what exactly?

Good point. I'm in.

"Albi said it's not clear who would pay for the dome or fund its maintenance."

Oh I am sure he has an idea who might, he's just not sayin'.

Relax boys. A couple of weeks from now when the arena report *finally* gets released, this little gem will start to look pretty good by comparison. Something tells me at least one keyboard at BoA is going to get a smashin'.

They could have at least made it a collapsible, geodesic glass pyramid.

BTW. That's a misprint in the Sun's article you linked to. The title is supposed to start with the word "Dumb".

Heh, heh. It's also supposed to end with "City Hall."

Grabia...you're lucky homeless people don't have computers....you're shitting on their future emergency shelter you definitely draw some negative comments.

I'm fairly confident that I'm not the problem in this equation.

This is why global warming is such a good thing. Think of all the money saved on geodesic domes in all subarctic cities around the world!

Sure, today only Edmonton wants one. But with such a World-Class City(tm) setting the trend, it'll only be a matter of time.

"I'm fairly confident that I'm not the problem in this equation."

....if you're not part of the solution....;o)

i am thoroughly disappointed that they did not suggest a geo-whatever pyramid. stick with the theme! edmontonians are the descendents of the pharoahs! remember when they paved over churchill square....then realized that wasn't good enough...then tore it up...then repaved it to make it even more awesome....

ps message from my nieces. if this city really wants to bring in the 2-5 age bracket...more wading fountains. that will put us on the map in every kindergarten and pre-school across canada!!!!

Welcome To Edmonton: A World-Class City for Pedophiles and Arena Aficionados.

I can see the $2 million dollar entry crystals already. Dangerousssss.

Weird. I see a giant dome on the cover of my morning newspaper and the first thing that comes to mind is Andy Grabia.

His heads not that big...

;)

The geodesic dome could even be used to house homeless people overnight...

I wonder if they would apply the same idea to a new arena. I mean, it's not like there will be anything going on there most nights anyway. And, it would certainly get them the hell off the streets.

"But with such a World-Class City(tm) setting the trend, it'll only be a matter of time."

Sorry man. I think Calgary has claimed rights to the "World Class" trademark already. Over and over and over and over again. But hey - if you say it enough, people should start to believe it huh?

I think Albi and Krushell are flirting with a near genius idea for increasing human traffic to the downtown core. Imagine the crowds a geodesic dome filled with homeless people could draw. If only it could somehow be locked from the outside to ensure the saftey of the public.

If they had thought of this last summer, they could have encapsulated tent city and added it as an attraction for the Ex.

i'm only going to support this if pauly shore gets to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony. what else other than a world class dome could bring the star of bio dome to our backwater town?

Another sign that Edmonton is fast becoming a World-Class City™: the elevation of the jaywalking fine from $40 to $250, as of April 1st. Next thing you know, police will be harassing and attacking people for the simple act of stepping off a sidewalk during playoff celebrations. Oh wait...

At least we'll know who let the monkeys out of their cage.

Laser-Floyd-Cramer?
