Heart & Soul

Whatever one wants to say about Ryan Smyth's skills on the ice, no one can doubt the impact he has had on this community. That impact continues to be felt, even though Smyth now plays in Colorado. Case in point: this letter to the Edmonton Journal.

Warning: overly sensitive dudes (cough) may choke up a bit while reading this letter. Do not read in front of other dudes.

Nice.

Speaking of heart and soul (or lack of one), did anyone catch Curtis Stock's blog comment today on the Journal's site? Jeezuz!

Wow. He wants Katz to give LaForge a 10-year deal? Does he mean Geordi La Forge?

Yeah. I couldn't believe it. But little comments like that start to reveal just how much influence the EIG and their management has had over the years.

Laforge is gone. That's why he's working so closely with the Chamber of Commerce. No doubt he's looking for a new gig and needs the networking connections/credibility that post will give him.

It would be too just and perfect of a world to see LaForge leave the team.

The man is a giant walking penis.

The next guy who comes in to sell for the Oil like Laforge did will probably wind up being an asshole as well.

My only hope is that he's just not as Big of an asshole as was Laforge.

BTW, with Nilsson piling up the counting stats, I fear it's becoming uncool to still love Smyth.

94's play last year pi**ed me off, but I'll never stop loving 'the moolay'. If that means I'm uncool, so be it. I'll be in good company.

No wonder Grabia keeps asking for his number.

Dennis, it'll only be uncool if you're still hitting the same rant button in 2010. Others are just trying to salvage some positives from our grief. If you find yourself taking an about face on some of your own stated opinions of Bobby N whenever you're reminded that he was part of the 94rental package, take it as a sign.

Acceptance

Great story. Is this about the centenarian who petted his mullet a year or two ago?

I will always have a place for Ryan Smyth in my heart, and think of him as an Oiler first and foremost, just as I do a whole bunch of other guys who made their name here and their money somewhere else. It's heartening to think he still has a place in his heart for this community.

Well said, Slipper, I fear :) we're in agreement on this one. Whatever one's feelings for Ryan Smyth, it's not Robert Nilsson's fault. Same as it's unfair to tie Joffrey Lupul's performance to CFP, or Jimmy Carson's to 99. In those cases the guy buried himself with his own performance, but the expectations of the fans sure didn't help.

In the current instance I would hope our GM would have made a good hockey deal in parting with the (other) face of the franchise, but I don't expect Nilsson to replace Smyth in my heart. He doesn't need to; Ryan's still there. Even if he's gone.
