Bleeding Green

"The Whalers, even though they don't exist, have a lot going for them."

I don't know whether I should be really happy about this movie being made, or really sad about this movie being made. As many know, the Whalers used to be my second favorite hockey team. That was destroyed in the summer of 2006, but watching the trailer for this movie made me all nostalgic and stuff. I went and listened to some "Brass Bonanza", stared at Carmen Electra, and cried my Kevin Dineen out. Okay. The whole thing just makes me sad. A post-Paddy's Day toast, then, to the remaining Whaler faithful.

Bonus fact I never get tired of telling people: Brian Burke, when he was General Manager of the Whalers, tried to ban "Brass Bonanza" from Whalers games. Yup. A**hole.

While I could never call myself a Whalers fan, I did own a hat - which is my only piece of non-Oilers NHL merch (I briefly considered buying a Kings cap in the early '90s). The Whale had one of the best logos in major-pro sports.

The "H" is brilliant.

This entry is made for Stuff White People Like.

The Hartford Whalers
Antiquated Typewriters
Gin and Orange Juice Breakfasts

You forgot:

Mac computers
Ikea lamps
Blogs
I Heart Nerds hats
Green Day

True! I wonder how many items you could pull into one photo. You'd have to put your recycling bin next to your desk, put your gin into a MEC cup, have a photo of your Prius on your desktop, etc.

What is that light brown thing in the corner used for?

Hitting intruders over the head?
Making waffles?
Communicating with London?

Dave Keon, Mike Rogers, John "Pieface" Mackenzie, Jim Dorey, Swoop Connolly . . . you will not remember this, but in the WHA, the Whalers really rocked.

Man, is there anyone who doesn't like "Stuff White People Like"? Such a great website.

agreed on the logo front. still one of the best, and featuring the seldom-used green & blue colour scheme. and i'd have loved to be the designer who came up with the idea of utilizing the existing logo for the then-AHL farm team Binghamton Whalers:

designer: "hmm, lemme see. Rotate Whalers logo 90 degrees clockwise. Save. Done. TIME FOR BEERZ!"

My love and knowledge of the Whale has been documented on a previous site. You're such a latecomer, Staples. :)

I love hearing the guy explain it all in the trailer. He's such a die-hard. Breaks my bloody heart.

Didn't Carmen Elektra hold the distinction of being the only guest to get 0/5 on the quiz?

I'm guessing the Dance to Your Favorite Song question was a way to guarantee on her return visit that she'd get at least one right.

And she's overdressed for a stripper.

You know, it still strikes me how the three most successful WHA teams to survive the merge all tanked for the majority of their NHL time, and in all three cases, wound up moving (and only two have found success in their new locales since). Meanwhile, the Oilers are still alive and bitchin' and have that snazzy line of banners. Just goes to show what a little forward thinking can do for you, I guess.

You look so happy in that pic. Kind of an evil happy. Almost like you have an advance copy of the mythical arena report and the rebuttal post is already locked and loaded for next Tuesday. Mua-hahaha!

Man, is there anyone who doesn't like "Stuff White People Like"?

Yeah, cuz white people they dance like this, but black people, they dance like this!

It wasn't funny in the early 90s, it's not funny now.

"Swoop" was Wayne Carleton, from Black Dog's home town.

Unfortunately, Carleton and Rogers didn't play for the Whalers at the same time.
Bill 'the Fiery Red Leader" Hunter traded an up-and-coming Rogers from the Oilers to New England for a thoroughly washed up Carleton.

Probably Hunter’s worst player personnel move.
And that's saying something.

That pic originates from the Great Beard Mojo Debate of Spring 2006, perhaps the greatest series of blog posts the world has ever seen. It was the Golden Age of hockey blogging.

Is this #50, Irony?

I don't know man, the whole thing is sort of a riff on white upper middle class culture. I think it's pretty bang on.

This Tyler/mc79hockey thing is really starting to mess with my mind. Which is it, man?

I'll drink to that.

Well, I was already drinking before I got here, but I'm gonna slap on my Whale jersey and drink more, faster.

ps I was just in Texas and yelled at some guy in a Whalers shirt "The Whale will prevail." He looked at me like I was Whack. Maybe he was being ironic.

*puts on jersey*

Sort of a lame riff on white upper middle class culture. ZING!!!!!!

Actually, not to belabour the point, but this is a pretty stunningly accurate summation of why I don't think it's funny. That we share the same opening salvo is just proof of the uncanny.
