Phaneuf signs

Sounds like $39M over 6 years.

There you have it. The bed is made. The Flames have a good core of players signed long-term for, as a whole, very reasonable salaries. If the team is good, this will be an unbelievable blessing. If it's not... uh...

Comments:

It's going to be a very interesting off-season for the Flames, that's for sure.

Helluva good deal for the Flames. Teams need players to take the hometown discount, and Phaneuf did that, as strange as that sounds.

But, on a more open market this summer, he would have commanded $8 million, I bet.

Perhaps he's making up the difference selling watches.

Pfft...if the Oilers have taught me anything about team-building in a salary cap era, it's much more important to lock up your dependable, easily replaceable role-players to long term deals for at least $2mil per.

I believe it's a good investment and I think that deal is going to look better over time.

David -

Congratulations on being the guy on the conference call who DIDN'T ask Katz to comment on comparisons between himself and Bruce Wayne.

when 3/4 of your team's poster boys are locked in for the next 5, you kinda presume that the guys upstairs will want to continue using the promo banners, and eventually get that last guy inked....

ya know ?

gordie howe hat trick: goal, assist, fight

dion phaneuf hat trick: 3 hits, 2 goals, 1 six year contract extension

Now all we need to do is sign Huselius and Langkow to $5-6 million deals, then it'll just be Iginla, Lankow, Huselius, Phaneuf, Regehr, Kiprusoff all night long. If one of them wants a break, they can take a penalty.

Is it just me, or is Phaneuf making puppy-dog eyes in WI's link?
