OTOH

Phaneuf looks terrific tonight, very strong on the puck in the Flames' end. I also enjoyed George Johnson's piece on The Dion at ESPN.com today. Go Flames.

Comments:

I agree, better game for Dion so far.

The very fact that you Flames fans feel the need to analyze his game so intensely speaks volumes on where his development is. I personally think Phaneuf is not bad, somewhat like another Flames defender of the past who was supposed to be a future Norris winner. Derek Morris is now in Phoenix, buried in obscurity and mediocrity. I sense the same for Phaneuf, as his reputation as a soft player and hiding on the ice is starting to wear on his confidence. If you are called out by Matt Cooke(possibly most annoying in the league) and still hide, things cant be good...

Flames steal one! Nice to see. Kipper was very good tonight (and Nabokov is right to be pissed, Phaneuf totally interfered with him on the OT goal, but I'm not complaining), Iggy was timely, if not dominant, and they found a way to win.

On another note, what was with the officials tonight? They let San Jose get away with bloody murder all night and Calgary spent what felt like half the game shorthanded.

Yeah, I'd post that anonymously too.

Phaneuf has more fights than Matt Cooke, has injured fewer players, and has three times the points. If anything, Phaneuf has paid far too much attention to that dink, not to mention other Poor Man's Matt Cookes around the league.

Im glad Im not the only one who thought that.

And GREAT game from Phaneuf tonight. He must have stopped worrying about his "bad reputation" for a few periods *snicker*.

"Iggy was timely" ????

Iggy is playing the best hockey of his career tonight. Minimizing this as "timely" indicates acute jadedness.

Yet another gritty win! We have faults, no question, but unlike the beginning of the season when every good play was overshadowed by a mistake, we now cover up our mistakes by good play elsewhere. Case in point: in a game where we're stuck in our own end and getting outshot almost 2-1, Kiprusoff puts up an amazing performance.

Note about Iginla: he has a league leading 6 GWG. Don't knock timely. I agree that he wasn't as dominant as usual. The Flames definitely had troubles generating offense in the third period, but when 2 goals is a bad night for a player, I'm happy.

I was actually a pretty big fan of Phaneuf, but when an anonymous poster says he has a "sense" about a Flames player, I listen. If anonymous posters aren't THE authority on hockey, who is?

If you compare Dion with his draft cohort: Ryan Suter, Brandon Coburn were drafted ahead of him and then Seabrook, Burns, Carle and Weber, you can even toss in Hejda from the 4th round, its a pretty good crop of defensemen, but Dion's the guy amongst that group.

Iggy is playing the best hockey of his career tonight.

You really think that someone other than the goaltender could possibly be playing 'the best hockey of his career' in a game where the Flames got outshot 36-20? Iginla is playing amazing hockey in general right now, but I can think of several games in recent weeks where he was more dominant than he was tonight, goals and points notwithstanding.
