I don't know how this affects plans for the new arena, but it is very close to the proposed site. And if you look at the pictures here, you can see that the third picture shows a very expansive EPCOR site. I actually did up a Google Map for people to look at.

I think the structures would be closer than they appear, actually. Here's the picture from the original Paula Simons arena story, for further reference.



You know, I look at that picture, and I still wonder who the anonymous person was who "supplied" it. It's just a real mystery to me.

I think these are the plans for the new arena.

Take a look at the Journal's arena rendering - the new Epcor tower is pretty clearly visible behind the CN building as part of the arena development...

I get the impression that the "new arena" gears are turning much faster than any of us suspect.

well, Mandel did say today, this is one of the many announcements to come in the near future.

It's not a question of if, but when the new arena project breaks ground. My prof is Dan Mason, and I've learned more about this topic in recent months. I went to his office last week to have a discussion with him regarding financing of this arena [okay, I was really there to pick up my essay report], but anyways, we were talking and he told me straight up that he is against a public subsidy - however, he's in favor of a public subsidy of a development site. Columbus is a comparable, he says,

Sorry, I meant a public subsidy for an arena only. He's against that

He's not against a public subsidy for a development site that generates enough spin-off revenue to pay itself for the arena costs.

Actually, they would appear as drawn, there is this much room on the CN Tower and old railroad yard grounds. Epcor Centre and the Post Office (new arena) would be just under a block apart. I live in the apartment buildings that now look north into the empty area (paved parking lot -west of the CN tower & dirt parking lot (where Epcor Centre is to be built) - just behind CN tower) and the Herb Jamieson Centre (http://www.hopemission.com/men.htm

Now with the study for the LRT to run North to NAIT the LRT will run underneath the EpCOR centre according to preliminary drawings. So underground parking and with LRT no need for vehicles, right?
