From Marconi to Maher

The Flames are in St. Paul tonight to play the Wild (6PM MT). No TV tonight (in Canada at least), and I wasn't planning on buying the Monday night PPV in Denver either, until I read this:
Monday night's Flames game in Denver is a pay-per-view broadcast, which will feature the debut of Theoren Fleury as colour-man. Should be interesting.

Wow -- seriously? Duhatschek put up a brief piece at the Globe on Hockey blog that I meant to link to already -- Catching up with Theo Fleury -- that didn't exactly give me the impression that this was in Fleury's immediate future:
Otherwise, Fleury says he’s through with hockey (“I hate it. I really do,” he said). He’s not part of the Flames’ alumni team and said he devotes most of his time to his cement business...

Fantastic little piece by Duhatschek. As usual, it's essentially straight reporting and in no way reeks of opinion, but is the furthest thing from bland or impersonal.

Theo Fleury is a real piece of work. He will never be in the Hockey Hall of Fame, but the day his #14 goes up to the Saddledome rafters will be a great one. There is no occasion I can think of, apart from Flames Win Stanley Cup, that would be a greater thrill for me to attend. I suspect it isn't going to happen, though, until Fleury has proven beyond reasonable skepticism that his life is sound and stable. You wouldn't want to do it and then 3 months later see him arrested for public intoxication and assault on a police officer... and besides, he'll probably appreciate it more with some perspective anyway.

Interesting stretch the Flames are headed into here. The next 8 games are one home and one away game against each of the Flames' 4 division rivals. Tonight? The Flames have always had good success against MIN, even on the road (you may recall they won back-to-back games there in March, and the other 2 last season were shootout losses).

I'm predicting a 3-2 Shootout Win; it'd be awfully nice if Owen Nolan could be one of the goal scorers (dude needs a break to get him going, I think). Go Flames.

Comments:

Booo Flames.

Theo should be in the Hall of Fame. Retiring his number in Calgary is a no-brainer. No one has worn #14 since Theo. I doubt any player would dare ask to wear #14 for Calgary.

However you may feel about him, you have to admit he was a great player. He is still the all-time scorer in Flames history.

I'm pretty sure that the first Falmes games I ever attended was a pre-season game in Theo's first year.

It was well before Joe Fan could read things like Lowetide and his ilk to know anything about non-roster players. Instead, I remember the crowd all looking around saying "Who the hell is that tiny little firecracker and is he going to actually make this team?"

Fun stuff.

His biography is dynamite too.

I think that he's got a case for the Hall of Fame too. 450+ goals, 600+ assists...he's well above someone like Glenn Anderson, given when he played. I know that he had his problems but lots of guys in the Hall of Fame had their problems.

As much as I hated the guy from the time he did that dance after G6 in the '91 BOA, I respected the hell out of his abilites and his determination. I can't see why a guy shouldn't make the Hall just becuase he was drunk and a coozehound.

Anyway, this whole Flames PPV thing is very intriguing. Theo apparently doesn't like hockey but he's going to do colour anyway and given the possibility that he's paired with the brazenly buxom Roger Millions, what might happen???

I agree, boo Flames ... but Theo was definitely a gamer.

Small guy but big production. He could go to the hall. But, his act would need to be clean for sure.

Was it the Nagano olympics that he was by far the best player?? I believe it was. He made things happen when he was out there.

Little rat-fink ... go Oilers.

"Flames Win Stanley Cup...I suspect it isn't going to happen..."

"I... dramatically... favour... guys"

Actually, if you read it over again, Colby's point is pretty strong. And it's a compelling reason for Flames fans to make sure Theo's life is in order.

Heh heh.

Also, most of the radio patents belong to Tesla, not Marconi.
