Gagner Signs, Gator In Charge

Master Samwise Gagner has signed a three-year entry level contract with the Edmonton Oilers. From TSN, via Black Dog Hates Skunks. Speeds explains why it made sense for both sides to make this deal over at IOF, and Bob Mackenzie has his take up on TSN. The details, according to Mackenzie, are as follows:

Gagner has agreed to terms on a three-year entry level contract. His NHL compensation is the maximum $875,000 per year, which includes an annual signing bonus of $87,500. It is, of course, a two-way contract with a minor league salary provision of $65,000.

He received the individual A bonuses but no individual B bonuses, which means it's not as potentially lucrative as, say, Pat Kane's contract in Chicago, but far more lucrative than what he would have gotten - about 75 bucks a week - if he wasn't signed by today's 3 p.m. deadline and returned to the London Knights of the OHL.

Even if Gagner plays 10 or more games, it does not count towards a year of pro service for the purpose of determining free agency down the road unless he plays in 41 games, or a half season.

In other news, Jason Smith has been named captain of the Philadelphia Flyers, and Joffrey Lupul is, to the best of my knowledge, still hurt. All in all, a good day to be an Oilers fan.

Re: "Samwise" Gagner:

Does the Oilogosphere really need more homoeroticism?

Sure, next you are gonna tell me that Batman and Robin were lovers.

Re: Gator as captain

Presumably this is a prelude to trying to extend him in Philly. I think I need to get over my delusion that he'll sign back with us next year.

Watching Gagner in the Super Series I kept thinking "Man, MacT is going to love this kid". I sure do.
Happy for Gator. doug m - I share your delusion. I won't give it up until it's final though.

Is this even debatable?

We all knew he could lead, but damn. How many former captains did he beat out?

Hey that sounds like good news for Philly fans too.
