I guess ominous is in the eye of the beholder

Item: Daryl Katz comments on offer to purchase the Edmonton Oilers

Lowetide:
For a fanbase that suffered through Peter Pocklington and Michael Largue and threats and promises and all of our heroes leaving in their prime, Daryl Katz is like manna from heaven.

Who could resist this?

Terry Jones:
Katz promising "to play to the cap" and saying "I am committed to building a winning team" also sounds like a warning bell to me.

Good businessmen have been known to buy teams as a toy. And if they do, they usually want to play with it.

I wish TJ had elaborated on his chilling conclusion there, because I'm genuinely curious as to just what the hell he's afraid of. I suppose he's probably concerned that Laforge and Lowe (among others) would get fired and replaced, but I wouldn't exactly characterize that as Every Oiler Fan's Worst Nightmare.

Or, maybe he's worried that Katz is going to move the Gretzky statue into his personal office, torch the banners, rename the team the Jug Hustlers, and build a new arena/Walmart/Bowlerama complex on the highway to Fort Saskatchewan. With Terry Jones, you never really know.

***Andy Update*** Thanks to Matt for posting this. I'll just add in an article on Katz from The National Post that ran earlier this week. My own thoughts are in the comments.

***Andy Update*** Here's another story from the Edmonton Journal. Love what the Mayor has to say, myself. He doesn't care at all who owns the Oilers. He's just doing what is right for Edmonton. That's why Lyle Best, Cal Nichols, and Pat LaForge are on the "Arena Feasibility Committee". Because he's really taking into account the interests of the entire community.

Comments:

Terry is upset because he doesn't want to have to break in a new owner at this stage of his PR, er.. reporting career.

Totally off topic... but I thought Matt would like this site, if he hasn't already discovered it.

http://www.nhlnumbers.com

Lots of salary/cap info for each team

"Jug-Hustlers"

I wish Mel Kowalcuk had come across that in the Oilman's Dictionary instead of "Cracker-Catting"

The mascot would be a gas, gas, gas.

One business man as owner = bad? Interesting logic.

I thought the Journal was Cal Nichols' mouthpiece.

This is a completely idiotic statement. He doesn't even make an argument after it. It's how the article ends.

And this part is ridiculous, too.

Certainly the investors aren't hurting for money. Most of them have done very well in their businesses in the same stretch they've invested in the hockey club, thank you very much.

Um, then why the hell haven't THEY spent to the cap, and why the hell aren't THEY spending for a new arena, thank you very much.

I'm supposed to be worried by the fact that a potential new owner wants to spend money on his team and his arena? And I'm supposed to forget how the EIG cried poor for the past ten years, and the fact that the mayor is trying to force us to build an arena for his buddies? Is every single "journalist" in this city in the pocket of these clowns?

I'm dying for Katz to buy this team, and I hope he chases the old boys club right out of town.

FYI, a new hockey facility on the UofA campus wouldn't be the first time Katz has given money to the campus. He gave $12.5 million to the Pharmacy and Law Schools last year. The whole town could be renamed Rexall by the time Katz is done.

Hey Edmonton, don't rub your Billionaire to hard..you'll wear 'em out.

maybe he's worried that Katz is going to move the Gretzky statue into his personal office, torch the banners, rename the team the Jug Hustlers, and build a new arena/Walmart/Bowlerama complex on the highway to Fort Saskatchewan.

I support approximately 3.7 of these 4 ideas.

what do you have against Walmart?

I have nothing whatsoever against Walmart -- shop there all the time -- but if one of the aims is still to scare away meth addicts, it would be counterproductive (you shoulda seen the eyes and teeth of my last cashier).

Oilers just put out an offer sheet to Penner. Not certain how I feel about this one. He had one good year on a good team. Not sure how he'd do with the Oil... that said, I like him, he has size, can score...etc... May work out.

I'm guessing Burke is ready for a heart-to-heart with Selanne. If Selanne is back, then they may just assume that Bertuzzi replaces Penner fine (and cheaper as it turns out)

5 years/21.5M

Andy... any other Oiler fans.. where are you. I want to hear your take on the Penner move.

As an Oiler hater, I don't see it as a great move. I really believe that you need a natural goal scorer.. someone to take advantage of Hemsky's playmaking abilities. I'm not sure if Penner fits the bill

I worried that a guys with Raffi Torres (05-06) number is making more than Hemsky. How good does Hemsky's 6 year deal look for the team right now?
