Comments:
Good to see Stauffer already setting the plate for Lowe. Although I agree with lots of what he says, I'm so confident that the guy is a mouthpiece for the Oilers that I find myself disliking it just on principle.
It true
I read in "Chicklets on the Ice: the Unauthorized Biography of Ryan Smyth" that Ryan always wanted to be coached by a Psychotic.
Where better than with the Falmes Now?
Meanwhile in other News,
Break out the Żywiec,
Poland just beat Brazil at the U20 WC
So the cap's going up to $60M in '08-'09? Because that's seriously the only way Smytty will fit with the Falmes beyond this season, and he ain't signing for one year, I promise you that. In fact, I'm gonna call it and say Pittsburgh.
The Flames sign Cory Sarich to a 5 yr/$18 million deal, according to TSN.
My gut reaction is the term is long for a guy that wasn't on my radar screen heading into today. That said he will be a top-4 guy.
So, does the Briere signing make it official that Pitkanen is being moved? They save cap space by front-loading another contract, but they must be near the cap by now, yes?

TSN reporting that Pitkanen and Sanderson for Lupul and J. Smith is RUMORED.
So how about this? Smith traded, Lowe offers Smyth a contract INCLUDING the captaincy.
Hmmmm....maybe a play for Hannan in the works?
So we shall see....
TSN reporting that Pitkanen and Sanderson for Lupul and J. Smith is RUMORED.
I think it's done. No story yet, but it's across the banner on top of TSN's page.
I'm surprised we had to give up Smith in the deal. Philly has added a ton of salary today. They must have to deal someone else.
Not sure how I feel about that trade. It won't save much cap space - $500-600K after they qualify Pitkainen, so unless they're acquiring Pitkainen because they're fully committing to a rebuilding period, I don't think it will be a big gain.
I'm still hoping they make a push for Scott Gomez. Hannan would be a good pickup too.
I'd rather they sign 3 players for Gomez' money, and I wonder if we'll see another veteran defenceman signed soon. Too bad Chicago picked up Perrault. For 1.5, he would have been a great addition. I guess another centreman wasn't necessary, though.
I said it on LT's site and I'll say it here. Gomez is fucking useless to us if we don't have a scorer, and doubly so given his proposed price point.
Too bad about Gator, though. So does this mean Moreau, as the only 2006 letter-wearer remaining, inherits the captaincy by default?
The Oilers need top-end talent more than they need another handful or role players.
Philly is about a million over the cap, I believe. They can probably get around that by sending a veteran or two (Sami Kapanen perhaps) to the minors.
The Oilers need top-end talent more than they need another handful or role players.
Huh? They could sign Kariya or Nagy for much less than Gomez, and I wouldn't call either "role players."

They're not going to get three Kariyas or three Nagys for the price of one Gomez.
Coming back to your original point, assuming Gomez goes for somewhere between $6 and $7.5 million dollars, you're going to get three players at an average rate of $2-$2.5 million. You won't get Kariya or Nagy for that. My guess is Kariya goes for $4.5-5, and Nagy for a million less than that. So if you save a couple million, that may buy you a couple of 4th liners or third pairing defenceman on the open market.
They're not going to get three Kariyas or three Nagys for the price of one Gomez.
I wasn't aware that I said that. Oh wait, I didn't.
Any of these guys for 6.5 plus longterm is a dummy move.
Kariya for three years plus a guy like Dvorak - good move.
Although I think with Smith gone we may see Smid or Greene next out the door as well as Torres.
That may be the Guinness talking though.
Philly - stupid dummies.
I wasn't aware that I said that. Oh wait, I didn't.
Well, given that you said you'd rather have three players instead of spending all that money on Gomez, then said you'd rather pursue Kariya or Nagy, perhaps you can elaborate on which three players you want with the money they'd have to have spent to get Gomez.
Kariya for three years plus a guy like Dvorak - good move.
Dvorak signed already, Pat, with Florida. I agree with you that others are still to go.
Philly - stupid dummies.
Mirtle said this deal would be hard to take for Oilers fans. Giggle. I'm positively ecstatic. Losing Gator hurt, but not as much as the thought of seeing Lupul in an Oiler uni next year.
Gomez gets 7 yrs and $51 mill at $7.3 million a year for someone with 60 pts last year. Holy hell...
That's gonna be about $15 million for 129 combined points last season.
Yergh!
How fabulous will it be to see the Rangers miss the playoffs next year? Oh, let it be so!
Well, I hate losing Smith but he was either going next summer or getting a big deal which would have been bad.
Lupul for Pitkanen - take it a hundred times.
Rangers back to their old ways - did they notice that the two seasons where they did not give huge money to whoever was available were the only two they made the playoffs.
So far, I have no problem with the way things have worked out today.
Damn. Hannan signed with the Avalanche. 4 years, 18 million. I think I would have been comfortable with that price.
Dvorak types?
So, any chance the Oilers are in for Kariya or Guerin?
Kariya/Sanderson/Moreau on the LW - Torres on the move then.
Only Smyth left out of the big forwards.
So the Oil have now cut loose Smyth, Smith, pick up Pitkanen (a minus 25), resign Tarnstrom from the SWISS league, I guess they're really going for grit and heart.
Hmm. Detroit, Philadelphia, New York Toronto and Colorado sign free agents for stupid big money. Sound familiar? Good thing we had that lockout!
Anyone know a list that is updated, showing who is left?
Don't forget Ketchup, Pat. He's out there still.
Fogolin passed the "C" to Gretzky. Buchberger went to Atlanta in the expansion draft.
Cool. Thank you!
What's the Oilers cap number at now?
Good question. They wil have to sign Pitkanen, though. Someone could play around on here and see.
Has every Oiler captain been traded, while being captain? Anyone?
Al Hamilton: lost/gave captaincy to Glen Sather (1976)
Glen Sather: Retired (1977)
Paul Shmyr: Returned to Minnesota after WHA merger (1979)
Lee Fogolin: Gave captaincy to Wayne Gretzky (1983)
Shane Corson: Lost captaincy to Kelly Buchberger (1995)
Kelly Buchberger: Lost to Atlanta in the 1999 Expansion Draft (that's a weird one, eh?)
So not exactly. Only most of them.
smyth is much much less without lupul and horc, as his underwhelming stint with nyi proved
but too bad he didnt sign the line with clagary. i guess 5.85m/year wasnt what he wanted to settle for. if thats what he wants to do, trade a guaranteed cup for $$$, so be it.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA......after watching all day, waiting to see which team jersey I'll need to buy after Smyth signs somewhere, I come here and have the best laugh at this statement:
trade a guaranteed cup for $$$, so be it.
The only thing guaranteed in Calgary is increased homelessness and Prince Harry asking to see boobs.
Go Avs!
smyth is much much less without lupul and horc,
Huh. And I thought I was the only one who noticed how Lupul was carrying Smyth last year.
Check TSN, Andy.
Penguins picked up Sykora and Sydor.
Why the hell couldn't we sign Sykora again? Didn't he actually LIKE playing in this city, for some fucked up reason?
Why the hell couldn't we sign Sykora again? Didn't he actually LIKE playing in this city, for some fucked up reason?
Saw it. Thanks, James. I assume that the Oilers passed on Sykora, not the other way around. Pens are gonna be scary next year, although I still think their defence stinks.
Why, exactly, is that deserving of a giggle?
If Stauffer calls a trade, it is very like going to happen. Whatever issues you might have with Stauffer.
If Stauffer calls a trade, it is very like going to happen.
Well since he works for them, I should hope so.
His biases elsewhere make him better at calling trades. So, in this case, he is reliable.
The TSN source is still Stauffer.
(If it's true, I think I actually feel pretty good about the price we just paid for 100 assists' worth of talent... pending salary arrangements, of course.)
As a humorous sidenote, on the TSN comments a Rangers fan is making fun of the Islanders signing policies.
Guess he hasn't realized that his team just got handcuffed to two monster contracts (15 million a year for 5 years, and a little tail off 2 years extra for Gomez) for what amounts to, in essence, 120 points.
I feel bad for the Islanders, they did what they could I guess, but watching their 3 top forward scorers, top scoring D, and a pair of solid 3rd liners fly the coup...painful.
by "coup" he means the french word for "cut", as in "The Islanders are going to be cut from the NHL and have to play in the Q or something now."
...aaaaaaaaand Nylander signs with Washington. Cue Stauffer announcement of a rehab stint in 5, 4, 3...
If Stauffer calls a trade, it is very like going to happen.
I love it when everything turns out just right.
From tsn.ca
The Calgary Flames have signed veteran forward Owen Nolan. Sources tell TSN the 35-year-old has agreed to a one-year contract that could pay him up to $2 million including bonuses.
I thought that guy was dead.
Nolan is a solid 2way player and will greatly round out the pure grit of the 2007 calgary flames. i like it
meanwhile, the oilers go fishing for free agents and come up with dick all. hahahaha
I don't think anything that happened really kills the idea that Stauffer has ins with the organization, and often will call a signing or trade before it happens officially. Does this somehow erase his calling of Peca/Pronger/Sykora, and various other smaller happenings?
Trades called before they happen are what they are. And the fact Stauffer has credibility is shown by the fact that TSN had it on its site.
So, Stauffer/The Team loses some credibility by getting it wrong, but this world of black and white you paint is really a little preposterous.
Anyone know why KLowe didn't deal Sykora at the deadline? Was there really nothing out there to get back in return? A pick? Something?
And the fact Stauffer has credibility is shown by the fact that TSN had it on its site.
Um, it was gone from the site this morning. The reason: it wasn't true. Just saying.
The term "credibility," of course, is measured in terms of repute among people of consequence. So your twisting of words to avoid the argument really just confirms my original point.
"Just saying."
