Visual aids can be so helpful!

The Al-Jaffee-influenced cartoonist Peter Bagge has a wonderful piece in Reason magazine, titled, "Let's All Give Money To The Rich Man: Billionaire Sports Team Owners And Their Corporate Welfare Scam", complete with copious and appropriate use of scare quotes.

Whole thing here.

Wow is this ever weird. I just now finished reading this comic and was headed over here to point it out to you and Grabia.

I love how cartoon Jay Buhner is depicted as a Mariners shill.

Jay Buhner makes me laugh. Automatically.

"What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?! He had 30 home runs, over 100 RBIs last year! He's got a rocket for an arm... You don't know what the hell you're doing!"

Frank Costanza, a fine judge of talent (on-field and front-office both).

"Guys, hitting is not about muscle. It's simple physics. Calculate the velocity, v, in relation to the trajectory, t, in which g, gravity, of course remains a constant. It's not complicated."

Just saw it. Beautiful.

Short anecdote from me:

I used to live in Denver during the late nineties and so this comic really hit home for me. I remember the city was told that if they wanted a Baseball team, they had to build a stadium. The city wanted a team bad enough that they imposed a 5% (or so) sales tax that would run for x years to pay for the beautiful Coors Field. The citizens seemed willing and thanks to clever naming, the entire state picked up the bill. A few years later, the Broncos had won back to back championships, John Elway was retiring and suddenly Mile High Stadium was no longer sufficient. So the decision was made by an election proposition to extend the sales tax to pay for the NEW Mile High at Invesco Field. It became quite a hot topic in Denver in the moments leading up to the vote. There was an obvious division amongst Denver's citizens, after all, who wants to pay $100's of Millions of dollars for a stadium that will be used... maybe two dozen times a year? So why would anyone agree to pay for it? Well because if the Broncos didn't have a new stadium, Pat Bowlen would have NO CHOICE but to move the team to a different city. I was, and still am by no means a big fan of American football, but I just couldn't imagine Denver without the Broncos, and I couldn't imagine how Bowlen could be allowed to extort the citizens like that. In then end, Bowlen got his new stadium and the Broncos have won... 0 championships since. No one in Denver seems to mind, they still have their beloved Broncos but you have to wonder what other things could have been done with all that money particularly in a city with enormous growth and a transit system that was essentially non-existent (seriously, Denver had/has the worst transit system I have ever experienced).
