Okay, I Couldn't Resist

Call:
"And, the C of Red will be loud, even if the Wings go up early."
--Matt Fenwick, April 16, 2007

Answer:
"Congratulations to Anaheim for revealing the true spirit of Calgary. When the Oilers got down by two in what Detroit now calls the Punch In The Face Game, Rexall Place didn't give up. Salei just put the Lames ahead 2-0 and the Sad-dome is a motherfucking tomb. These people don't know whether to shit themselves or cry.

The Sea of Red is a fashion statement. GO DUCKS."

You know Andy, many people work even more during retirement...something to keep in mind ;)

Ah, that's why these things have to be rebutted at the time, lest they end up considered accurate history and not revisionist. Speaking of... are we still giving the Rexall crowd the credit for Pisani's work in G6 v DET too?

Remember when they were down 2-0, and the crowd sent them to the dressing room after the 2nd with a rousing Let's Go Oilers? No, because it didn't happen; the Oilers were playing like crap, and the crowd was stone dead.

Ah yes, the Vaunted Rexall crowd. I still remember the roar of the crowd that night we all got together in January to watch the Flames kill the Oilers 4-Egg at Rexall.

Once the Flames were up 2-0 the Rexall crowd was deafening. At least it must have deafened me, because I couldn't hear anything.

Go Flames.

That's a pretty good chicken and egg scenario. Can the answer precede the question?

I'm more concerned that Calgary starts putting some shots on net just so that Hasek's will have the opportunity to actually earn a few points in my playoff fantasy pool.

Burn in hell, Flames fans.

I wonder how loud will that Rexall Place crowd be tonight.

I wonder how loud will that Rexall Place crowd be tonight.

Still thinking about hockey Rob? Has the Stampede been cancelled?

As magical a time as it was, I don't think anyone who experienced 2006 -- other than drunk-ass teenagers and their like-minded wannabes -- was really aching to do it all over again. It would have been too much.

Oh wait: that's not true. What kind of sorry dink would write soemthing like that?

Ah yes, I remember how busy and loud Whyte Ave. was after the Oilers lost the cup in game 7 last year. It was as it had been throughout the playoffs, Oilers fans burning pallets, making out with family members and generally acting like the best fans in the world. And just to prove how awesome they were, Oilers fans everywhere united on their beloved "Blue Mile" even after Gator and the rest were trounced in Carolina...Oh wait...There was NOBODY FUCKING THERE. Of course, based on this one observation we shouldn't judge Oil fans, but in this case I think I will and might I add I wonder how loud will that Rexall Place crowd be tonight. And might I add HA and fucking HA as well as I hope your team drowns in the pool of shit in which it is currently mired.

HA and fucking HA, indeed.

I'd rather be a depressed, yet strangely optimistic, Flames fan than a suicidal Oilers fan right now.

And wow, is that Flames Central ever a nice joint. Betcha they don't have one of those on Whyte Ave.

Do you know what my very, very favourite part of the playoffs is? No, not the Flames getting the bejeezus kicked out of them, although that is enjoyable. My very favourite part is watching the Flamers who are inbred even for Flamers start coming out of the woodwork spouting random profanities and insanities, usually posting anonymously, their monitors covered with a layer of spittle so thick it drops onto the desk at the public library.

That said, I would contend that Flamers and Oiler fans are about equal in lack of enthusiasm when their team goes down early. The main difference is that there are about a hundred Flames fans and about a million "WOOOO GO FLAMES (now that they're winning) WOOOO (flips over car)" running around in their 2007-vintage Alex Tanguay jerseys who suddenly vanish the instant it's 1-0 Wings.

I should be fair, though. The instant Kipper pulls another 35,211-save performance out of his ass to get Calgary a 2-1 win, Tanguay-shirt is usually the first guy standing in front of a TV camera with his ninety-third beer in his hand drunkenly screaming that they -never- gave up hope.

The only reason Whyte Avenue was dead after Game 7 is that Edmonton fans found it difficult to fight both their saddness over the loss and the corrupt baton-and-taser-wielding Edmonton Police at the same time.

(Oh, by the way, the 2007 Flames are about to become the first Alberta NHL team in history to lose to Detroit in the playoffs. Enjoy)

Same applies to the Dead Mile. Face it: Albertans ain't got shit on Montrealers or even Vancouverites on post-loss behaviour.

And what a surprise: an anonymous Flanmes fan!

Of course you would be. You don't care enough one way or the other.

Wow -- I guess cheering for a team that is destined to suck for the balance of the 00's is harder on a guy than I realized. I feel your pain, Lord B, I do. I remember the Young Guns days of the 90's. Glad I'm not living through that again.

HA and fucking HA!

Go Flames!!!!

Still thinking about hockey Rob? Has the Stampede been cancelled?

No, Stampede hasn't been cancelled, mc79, unlike your gig at the Score hockey blog.

And what a surprise: an anonymous Flanmes fan!

Of course, there have been no anonymous Oilers fans posting comments since the start of the playoffs, none.

well, so far trading Andrew Ference, Chuck Kobasew, Lundmark and a few draft picks for an over-rated rental d-man and a has-been center that Flamers hoped would bring back magic of 2004 has given them the exact same amount of wins in the playoffs as the Oilers...congratz Flames!

Man, I really do miss the days of garbage bagged nose-bleeds in the Saddlesore due to lack of interest

Jordan

Peter, you can laugh all you want, but as of right now, it's likely about an 85% chance that the Flames will win the same number of playoff series in 2007 as the Oilers will.

Hear that sound boys? It's the sound of a window closing...

Now this is a battle of Alberta thread!

Now this is a battle of Alberta thread!

No shit. I love it.

Yea, isn't it awesome that the Flames fans who were gleeful about our injury induced death spiral now have the joy of making the playoffs, so they can be summarily humiliated and bounced in the first round where their offense has looked about as potent as Bob Dole without viagra.

There is a difference between an impotent offence and a vaunted one. I note that the list of teams which scored more goals than the Oilers this year is 29 names long.

And SweatyOne, I am off to a bar full of red clad fans to cheer on my team tonight, which has a 100% chance of playing 4 more playoff games this year than your team. How is the Blue Mile these days? And Oilers Central? Is that a happening joint?

Meh, Whyte Ave is kind of quiet right now. I'd say come up and experience it, but why drive 3 hours when you're going to get to see the same thing first-hand on 17 Ave within the next seven days?

It's one thing to have a great d-man jam out on your team, to suffer a long list of injuries and to lose your best forward to a deadline trade. It's another altogether to give up assets for Craig Conroy and two UFA rent-a-players in Stuart and Primeau and flop out in the first round.

Rather than a frantic scramble to miss the playoffs by 2 points or be first round fodder, I'll gladly take the 6th overall pick and wait and see what Kevin Lowe does this summer with regards to trades and UFA signings.

I feel like Chris Matthews on Hardball. Give me something crazy!

I'll gladly take the 6th overall pick and wait and see what Kevin Lowe does this summer with regards to trades and UFA signings.

Good luck with that. It seemed to work pretty well for the Oilers last year, after all.

You can't possibly believe that. K-Lowe is going to waste that pick on Francois Boot. You know he will.

Meanwhile, the Flames win big tonight. And Whyte Ave remains decidedly less stabby.

Go Flames.

Are the Flames fans here (ok, to be fair, just the one with the name that's synonymous with "pecker") actually crowing about a sports bar? Like a place where nouveau riche douchebags can swill $9 Canadians and root root root for the home team* is a point of pride? Was Calgary lacking such a venue before?

*when said team is winning, of course.
