Flames Game Day

So I'm watching the 2nd period of Preds-Sharks last night, and saw a sequence which kinda relates to my ramblings yesterday. 1-1 tie, Sharks PP expires, and Kariya comes out of the box. As he's getting back to his blue line to insert himself into the action, it looks like the puck might be loose, and he quickly pivots hoping for the clear breakaway. But, the Sharks quickly regained possession, across to Clowe, and he scores. Turns out Kariya made a bad read, and possibly cost his team a goal -- a goal that proved to be the winner (video here).

Glen Healy took a break from his star-fellating ("I have never seen someone practice harder than Radulov, and I have never seen someone with softer hands than Radulov") to go all snarky on Kariya -- "Hey Paul, where you going? You don't have the puck!" -- followed by a comment about how Kariya needs to be more committed to the team game they're playing.

Now: I'm not disputing whatsoever that it was a bad play. Kariya screwed up. But Glenn Healy: are you serious, dude? Do you think Paul Kariya made the decision he did with personal glory in mind, or to pad his playoff stats? I don't believe that; I think it's more likely that Paul Kariya knows exactly what his primary role is on the team: to use his gifts and hockey sense to create scoring chances in a manner and quantity that less gifted players are incapable of.

Perhaps Jim Playfair would have stapled PK's ass to the bench after that play. Barry Trotz, as it turns out, gave him nearly twice as much TOI in the 3rd period as he did in the 1st. Was he giving Nashville its best chance to win, or was he failing to hold his star player accountable for a lack of committment? YOU make the call!

[Sidebar -- enjoyable take from Chris Selley:
...this Nashville-San Jose series is crack.

UPDATE: Like I said, crack. That little punk Tootoo sucker-punches Ryane Clowe and gets his punk ass handed to him. I don't care who wins this thing. It's magically delicious.]

Anyway, enough coach-related crap, that can wait for the off-season, whenever that comes about. Here's the thing about being down 2-0 in a playoff series: it always looks bad. Degrees vary, but the comments on the team in the hole are never super-positive about their prospects for recovery. Here's Sacamano, from when the Oilers were down 2-0 to the Sharks last season:
...it was just painful to see those ridiculously young Sharks d-men skate their way out of their own zone with no pressure until the red line. The Oil need to get on these guys a little more often. Of course, it would help if the Oilers remembered how to forecheck. They sure didn't win many battles on the boards. Remember those days the Oilers managed to put up a fair number of shots while being the best team in the NHL at preventing shots? What happened to that team?

I guess the bright light is that, despite being outplayed by a tough, tough team, the Oil were still only one bad penalty away from playing them even on the scoreboard. The burnt out bulb is that I can't see the Oil winning 4 of the next 5 games against this team.

And from someone named "Andy Grabia" in the comments to the same thread:
I am despondent. What angers me the most is how indifferent the players and coaching staff seemed in the post-game interviews.

And from Andy's own site at the time:
The Oilers are in big trouble. They are getting out-hit, out-skated, out-hustled, out-coached, out-skilled, out everything. All they appear able to do is skate around the boards, pass to the defencemen, and have them either miss the net or have their slapshot blocked. Everything that was wrong with the Oilers this year has been brought to the surface over the past two games. We are an entirely predictable team. It kills me to say it, but this looks like it will be over in four... Other than Moreau, the players look lifeless... Smyth, Hemsky and Samsonov look lost out there.

Etc., etc., etc. Etc. ("No sense pretending: teal-coloured thunderheads are hanging, low and threatening, over this city.") The point of this is not to mock (although Andy's bipoilerism is hilarious); it's to illustrate that the dread associated with being down 2-0 is related not so much to the actual deficit, but to how it happened. Or put another way, when Bob Mckenzie notes that "..how the Flames lost their first two games is almost as important as the fact that they lost them", this is not an insight that's unique to this particular series.

In fact, as of this moment, it's quite irrelevant. If the Flames win tonight (whether by playing very well, by the Wings playing poorly, or through sheer luck), it's 2-1, with a chance to tie the series at home. If there's any substance to this notion of a collective playoff insecurity within the Wings that's waiting to be exposed, well, tying it up after starting the series with two ridiculous, dry-ass-rape blow-outs seems like an ideal way to expose it.

We finally have a game time that's suitable for hockey: 8PM MT, after the kids are in bed. Here's something I didn't anticipate saying in my lifetime: since I don't get an American feed tonight, I'm stuck watching the CBC broadcast.

I looked at the two home games v. DET on Vic Ferrari's fantastic new site to look for a clue as to what the Coach might do with last change, but I have more questions than answers now. On Nov.17, it looks like he was trying to keep the Iginla line away from Draper/Maltby, but was more than happy to go Power vs. Power against the Datsyuk line. Considering how that went in Gms 1&2 where Babcock went with the exact same matchup, Jimmy may rethink things. In the more recent game (Mar.20), he was obviously sending out Regehr/Stuart against Datsyuk, but there's not much that's obvious in the way of forward matchups. And since Regehr is hurt again, who knows.

To repeat myself for the billionth time, I think the Flames have a better chance if Playfair will release the hounds... but I don't care how they win. I'll take 1-0 in OT, 3-0, 7-6, 4-2, 2-1, whatever. Just win, baby. Lombardi with the GWG. Go Flames.

Comments:

I don't think too many coaches would be worried about keeping players of Iginla's ilk away from Draper/Maltby. Don't believe the hype, Matt.

Anyway, Babcock definitely wanted the Zetterberg/Iginla matchup in G2 and he's had the Lidstrom/Iginla one in both games.

The Flames are in a tough spot for matchups I think. Especially with all of Iginla/Langkow/Tanguay on the same line. I don't think they can afford to start dodging Zetterberg unless they move Langkow onto a line to counter.

Oh and one other thing. The DET-CGY deficit this year is far worse than the EDM/SJ one from last year. G1 was ugly by my memory but G2 was a pretty tight contest across the board.

Heck, the Oilers lost by a goal in each game which is a far cry from what has happened to Calgary this year in Detroit.

Ya, I'm with rivers here. If I'm Playfair I take Langkow and a couple of vet wingers and run him at Zetterberg's line. At least that breaks up Lidstrom and Z.

And even if it means cutting back on Iggy's icetime, he's got to sit in the bushes and wait for Hudler and Lang with Iggy's troika. Iggy just owned Lang in the series the Flames won a couple of years ago ... this year he can't get out there against him.

As much as I'm enjoying seeing the Flames suffer ... I feel for Playfair here. Babcock has better cards, and guys like Bob MacKenzie are out there convincing hockey fans otherwise. And Brian Sutter is sitting up in the box, strumming his banjo, and having goathorns fitted for the coach.

Tough gig.

Looks like 2-0 on both counts to me, so I can't agree.

Calgary has never come back from an 0-2 deficit. Maybe we're due?

Matt said...

Yes, to hell with goal differential or shots directed at net or balance of play or any of those things.

I guess other means of comparison that you can't fit into baseball standings are off limits?

bipoilerism - That's awesome

Well ahem, RQ:

1) Doesn't look like the rest of the Oilogosphere thought the 1st 2 of EDM/SJ were as close as you do (see the numerous links in the post)

2) When using past results to make predictions about the future, I think it's wiser to look further back than 2 games.

I thought I was plenty clear about what I meant in the main post, but whatever.

My bipoilerism is awesome. Thanks, dude!

But I digress. Let's take a look, again, at some of Fenwick's finer nuggets. I thought this one would fit the best, seeing as you are going to have to address it again, or not adress it again, as the case were, soon enough:

"Jarome Iginla had a good, not great, season, and now is the time when he will, or will not, earn his money. Am I saying that if the Flames go deep in the playoffs, he gets a pass on his non-Hart Trophy-contending regular season? Well YEAH!

Go forth, Jarome, and show everyone what you're made of. We can have this discussion in July."

Agreed. Has everyone forgotten who coached that team last season in the playoffs?

Ahem. From after G2:

My point is this. The Sharks have dominated the Oilers the first two games of this series. They’ve managed to come away with two one goal wins. The Sharks are not that much better than the Oilers. Edmonton’s margin for error or a bad break is much smaller now than it was on Sunday when the puck was dropped but the teams are close enough that the Oilers are still in it.

"Dominated" is of course a relative concept and if San Jose dominated Edmonton (which I thought they did), the Wings basically took to the ice in leather while carrying whips.

Heh, "dominated is a relative concept". That's not stretching too far.

Not to pile on, but Dennis' Game 2 summary in the S.J series nailed it, I thought. The left brain of the Oilogosphere was pretty rational about the situation.

On the other hand, the Oilers got their asses handed to them in Game 1 of the DET series, and were outplayed in every game.

The only line that outchanced the bad guys was Smyth/Horcoff ... but not by much, and they were being run by Zetterberg and Lidstrom consistently. They usually had Smith/Staios behind them iirc, presumably Pronger was being shifted off elsewhere to try and mitigate the damage from Shanahan, Yzerman, Lang, etc.

Back to the first point of your post though: Agreed that Healey is off his nut. Kariya took a gamble and lost, doesn't necessarily mean it was a bad gamble imo.

Matt - this is the comment I was responding too:

Degrees vary, but the comments on the team in the hole are never super-positive about their prospects for recovery.

I figure what I wrote was well within the bounds of "positive, in a sane sort of way." Of course, my team didn't look nearly this bad.

The left brain of the Oilogosphere was pretty rational about the situation.

Dennis is part of the left brain?

G2 was a pretty tight contest across the board

Man, what? Do you not remember those games? G2 was slightly better than G1, in the same way that Nagasaki was a little bit better for the Japanese than Hiroshima. We were getting thoroughly dominated in a manner not terribly unlike Calgary has been, (30-16 and 38-25, which is a bit better), but as I recall any closeness of score was mostly due to Roloson, and it looked a whole lot like the Oilers were trading COL/DAL for DET/SJ. I haven't read Dennis' graduate thesis on the subject, but going purely on memory of feeling, I was thinking Detroit Game 6 was going to be our highlight for the next year until Samsonov scored on Toskala's gaffe.

Having said that, though: FLAMES ARE SUCK! WINGS IN 4! Etc, etc. Sorry, right brain and all that.

the difference between the Oilers 0-2 deficit and the Flames 0-2 deficit is that that the Oilers played much better in Game 2 after only 24 hours to recover while the Flames had 2 full days to prepare for Game 2 and got their asses handed to them

Did they just have a moment of silence for the tragedy at Virginia Tech? Are there a lot of Hokies in Calgary that I'm not aware of? Is Marcus Vick playing for the Stampeders?

There don't appear to be any on the Stamps' roster.

Detroit didn't score in the pre-game warmup, so things are looking up for the Flames.

Whenever something bad happens to Americ... er, to anybody, it's worth a moment of silence in other countries.

So much for CBC's "Lidstrom is Jesus" storyline. That's two fuckups for goals tonight.

Man, that hit by Cleary on Phaneuf made my night. What goes around, comes around, bitch.

Mike Comrie is clutch, Nik Lidstrom isn't, Jarmoe is coming through when it counts, Dion Phaneuf is getting his just desserts, the Flames are winning a playoff game without Kiprusoff completely stealing it, and dogs are marrying cats. I'm not sure I like this world, guys.

I don't know if this is picking nits or just Flame fan paranoia, but does anybody else notice how much trouble the Flames have clearing the zone? The last minute I think Hammer had the puck on his stick (on his forehand!) with open ice to shoot it, but dealt it to his backhand, then tried to weakly push it up the boards where the Wings had two guys stacked to stop said clearance. If we're trying to clear it, then CLEAR it and if that means a waist high slapshot, let 'er rip. If we're trying to avoid icing the puck, then skate it out or take it to a corner and freeze it, DO NOT repeat DO NOT try to weakly wrist it through the center part of the ice within glove range of a pinching defenceman. Sheesh, its been driving me crazy all year, maybe I'm just sensitive to it because I'm watching the Flames predominantly. Phaneuf was terrible at the beginning of the year, but has been better in the second half.

Woo Hoo, now that is what I'm talking about. Big Flames win at home, the crowd at Bottoms Up was going mad and we're back in the playoffs baby, we're back. I'm not sure it's stabbing time or fire-setting time just yet, but baby steps, just baby steps.

HA fucking HA!

Go Flames

PS Daniel Cleary is now my most hated hockey player. The fact he is ex-Oil puts him over the top.

Wow, I've been out of the loop for awhile now, or at least posting wise, and I come back to read both Andy and PM taking shots at me.

Good times;)

The whole time I was reading this thread I was waiting for Vic or someone else to highlight my G2 post from last year and as you can see, I thought MacT could turn things around once we got back to Edm.

I thought the Flames could sorta do the same tonight but there's no question that without Reghr they won't win this series, not unless one of the more talented Wings goes down in similar fashion.

I come back to read both Andy and PM taking shots at me.

Never. I think we were having fun with the idea that some out there think we are raving lunatics incapable of rational thought. Which is totally true in my case, but those guys at CIO are f**ing philosophers.

Not so much Flames traffic here tonight.

Did they just have a moment of silence for the tragedy at Virginia Tech?

At the 'dome, who can tell?
