Big Win

The Flames just beat Minnesota 4-2, a win that was:
  1. on the road
  2. in regulation
  3. against a team in a playoff position
According to my lovingly kept records, that's the first time this has happened since... Game 3 vs. the Ducks in the '06 playoffs. It's only the 3rd reg. road win this season against a team that is presently in a playoff position; on Nov. 11 they beat Vancouver (Canucks record at the time was 8-8-1), and on Oct. 12 they beat Ottawa 1-0 (Sens record at the time was 1-2-0).

Not to be forgotten: before this little two-game set, Minnesota had won 9 straight games (7 in regulation, 2 in OT, 0 in shootouts). The Wild is a good team.

I am not about to claim that the Flames are now a great road team -- they're not. They're a much better home team. But as I had noted for a couple of months, the Flames were not as horrible on the road as their record indicated -- they lost an inordinate amount of one-goal games, never won in OT/SO, etc etc. What would seem to be obvious now though, with 3 straight road wins under their belt, is that they are not cursed, victims of Murphy's Law, lacking that little extra something, whatever. There is no special, existential reason that the Flames are extra-bad on the road.

A win in Vancouver on Saturday would be a pissah exclamation point on the end of the trip. I'm taking a weekend trip with the fam to Montana -- I may not be able to catch the game, and I definitely will not have a Game Day post -- but I sure don't see why they can't pull off the 4-0-0. Go Flames.

Comments:

That's what I've been waiting for - a convincing win against a quality opponent.

You got all that from ONE win? Whatever makes you feel better, I guess.

That's what I said Andy, "with ONE straight road win under their belt".

Remember that horrible Flames road record we talked so much about all year?

Well, it's still horrible, but it's a little better. And it is better than the Oilers'

Go Flames.

Fuck. I was at that game. Caught a bad Jiggy in the playoffs that night (no small feat).

And Grabia, awfully tough for you to be giving advice on how to react to one road win, isn't it?

As long as the Flames have to face Nsh or Ana come R1, I'm happy. Of course I'd rather see both Cgy and Ana lose in the first round but if I had to choose I'd go with Pronger, GULP;)

Yep, and all it's going to get them is a season that's two weeks longer, if that. If they draw Detroit, they've got a chance. Nashville, Anaheim, or even the Canucks? Forgetaboutit!

Flames fans used the line for many years before 2004, I reserve the right to use it now, with a smile on my face.

And I'll be happy as long as Oilers avoid using their top-ten pick on this year's Daniel Tkaczuk (sp?) or Rico Fata.

... or Jason Bonsignore or Steve Kelly

With no Flames "Game Day Post" this weekend, and Grabia essentially boycotting the Oilers games, BoA is going to be an awfully quiet place the next couple of days.

And it is better than the Oilers'

FIVE STANLEY CUPS MOTHERFUCKER!! FIVE STANLEY CUPS!!

Well okay then, I'll go ahead and say it:

GO CANUCKS GO!!!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Luongo is far better than Kipper.
Bieksa rules over Phaneuf.
Vignault outcoaches Playfair anyday.

Unbiased neutral opinion?

2 out of 3 right.

Flames 3 Canucks(&McGeough) 2

Seriously, two minutes for slamming the penalty bench door closed?

May I curl up into a ball and cry now?

Actually, the Canucks only showed up for fifteen minutes, and they still almost won.

We Rule!

When you start chirping about how you ALMOST won against the worst road team in hockey, I think you may want to recalibrate the glory hole.

Woo Hoo!!!

The Flames, a terrible road team, take down the Canucks, to complete a 4-0 road trip. This pooch would not have been close had the replay ref not allowed Mats' hand goal but whatever.

This team is a frikkin' loaded cannon heading into the playoffs. i only hope we get the Ducks in round one. Paybacks a bitch. I want Scott and Chris to be ours.

Go Flames!!!

PS - The sweetness is we can clinch our playoff spot on Tuesday head to head with the Avs on Tuesday. I'm sorry, I expect the Oil fans who read this blog tunes have stopped listening by now.

Go Flames!!!!

I respect this nonsensical prose, because I know Peter was either drunk, high on victory, or both. I must also admit to being envious of the joy Canucks and Flames fans are feeling. Don't get me wrong, I'll be cheering for both teams to be swept in four miserable, soul-stealings games. But I sure wish I felt that good right now.

How about Lombardi getting 2 minutes for Sedin backing into him and falling down? Fuck McGeough is terrible. Take him out of the equation and that game was not that close last night.

When you have 8 minutes of powerplay time in the final period, it's not exactly tough to dominate. Let's not plan the Canucks Cup parade just yet, mmkay? I'm pretty sure they won't have Mighty Mick as the referee for every game in the playoffs.

the only thing worse than the oilers not making the playoffs is that calgary will. actually, if carolina squeaks into the playoffs it will be worse -- and the fact that i find myself cheering for the leafs to the keep the canes' heads underwater...well, it just makes me feel icky. like andy and sweatyo, i take comfort in the fact that the flames will be extinguished in prompt fashion by being pissed on by a superior team (take your pick, any will do).

on a side note, i find it somewhat symbolic that my word verification closely resembles anorexia. although i think bulemia would be more appropriate under the circumstances.
