Oilers Game Day-Hawks

Busy as hell this weekend, so I'll leave it to you fine people to tell the story. I will recommend checking out Pat's little quiz, though. I also saw some clips of the Flames game last night, and was happy to see that Wrinkles Phaneuf was up to his old tricks, with a dirty and dangerous hit from behind on Rick Nash. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess he didn't drop the gloves in self-defence either, if anyone on the Blue Jackets even bothered to try and fight him. Actually, it looks like there were a bunch of cheap shots being committed around the league last night. And maybe it's just me, but it seems to be happening with increasing regularity. Can someone explain why the NHL has the instigator rule again?

***Update***

Tom Benjamin makes some solid points about the instigator rule. He also picks up on a story on the salary cap by Darren Dreger at TSN. In it, the new stadium story continues to be spun.

Comments:

What's next..."Dion Phaneuf sells poison milk to school children!"?

Yep, Phaneuf levelled Nash with a dirty hit. A scrum ensued. Phaneuf more or less hid behind the officials. Foote gave him a shot when he was coming on the ice and Dion was going off. Foote got a penalty for unsportsmanlike and Calgary scored a PP goal.

Luckily, sweet lady Karma arrived on the scene, the Jackets scored two quick ones, and the Flames lost.

The moral of the story? Just as many (including myself) said on January 20th and 21st, Dion Phanuef, for all his talents, is a gutless pussy.

Dion Phaneuf sells poison milk to school children!

Can I quote you on that?

I'm totally loving the jealousy of the Oilers fans.

Phaneuf not only leveled an awesome hit, he drew a penalty on that play. It's called smart hockey -- I can't fault you for recognizing it when you see it, after having to watch the Oilers this season so much.

As a side note, it's telling of the quality of your team when your "game day" post discusses the Flames rather than the Oilers.

That's the best joke I've heard in months.

Ya, I wish we were 5-5 in our last ten, too. Oh wait...

Thanks for the referral, Andrew. Busy weekend - in training for next season?

Questions include is MAP going to get some serious icetime now, if he does is it to showcase him and is it all moot anyhow with a seven game roadtrip looming "sans Stoll"?

I say - yes, no, unfortunately maybe yes.

I'll admit I cringed when I saw Phaneuf hit Nash live, but the initial camera angle made it seem much worse. The side view showed quite clearly that it wasn't a hit from behind (Nash's shoulder hit the boards before his head, and he wasn't hurt at any rate).

The karma thing is interesting... for a vet like Foote, that's an insane penalty to take -- you can't wait until the next shift when you're both on?

And for the record, Dion Phaneuf has been in more fights this season than every Oiler except Greene and Winbister, and as far as I can recall hasn't seriously hurt anyone with a hit. Raffi Torres has fought less while injuring more players. Why isn't he the bitch? Is it because he speaks contritely for the cameras, and then goes on a 12-game Useless-streak to underline how sorry he is? That, and I suppose that no one wants to fight him for the express purpose of getting him off the ice for 5+, since he's generally a non-factor.

I just watched it again, saw the side view, and that is still a hit from behind. The fact that Nash wasn't hurt is irrelevent. The point is the guy plays dirty, and won't stand behind his actions. Three fights doesn't make him a tough guy. In fact it proves my point, as a guy who plays that cheap should have been in about twelve by now.

Maybe this is why Wrinkles won't fight. That Greg Millen laugh is going to warm my heart all weekend.

I cringed as soon as I saw Nash park himself three feet from the boards, and then drop his head. Good Lord -- that's a lesson we learned before we even started playing contact hockey. It's another example of the "big man" syndrome we saw so often from Eric Lindros -- someone who's been so physically dominant throughout his hockey career he never learned to protect himself (the unfortunately thin-skinned melon notwithstanding.)

If Andy had his way, all players would play with such stupidity as Nash. If you set yourself up for serious injury like Nash did by facing the boards with his head down for quite some time with the puck, you should not be invulnerable from contact. That's something that can easily be exploited, and all it's doing is rewarding stupidity.

Nash had his head down -- by the boards -- while Phaneuf was on the ice in the Flames' zone. What did he think was going to happen?

If anything I think Nash was trying to draw a penalty. But maybe I'm giving him too much credit...maybe he's just dumb.

In any case, Grabia's whining is just funny for countless reasons, including what Matt has outlined above...

Guys, no one is a bigger Dion supporter than me (except HG), but that was definately a dirty hit.

That said, the fact that other teams despise Dion so much is proof as to how good he is. If Dion is a modern day Claude Lemieux let me be the first to stand up and say I'm glad I'm playing with him rather than against him.

Man oh man, let's forget that the Flames suck on the road for just a minute shall we?

The Oilers want the cap at 40 million bucks? I'm not against owners of pro teams making a buck but we just finished an era where supposedly a new CBA was going to make the Oilers competitive again and now the Oilers want the cap at 40 mill?

Does anyone else get the feeling that even with a new building and a cap at 60 mill you'll see the Oilers are 52 and talking about saving 8 mill for "cap flexibility"?

Fuck I hate this organization sometimes.

Dennis

Look at the brightside, you're saving all that money by not having a farm team in the 'A', but I'm sure it won't hurt the development of MAP or Dubnyk or Schremp; well almost sure.

Funny, you were implying that it was a clean hit the first time you posted. Now you are suggesting he deserved getting run from behind. Classy.

I'm assuming Nash thought what most people would think: that a player would wait until he turned before hitting him.

It's good to know that you've decided to blame the victim, though. It'll come in handy when something like that happens to Phaneuf, and you scream murder.

Agreed. I'm starting to like the EIG less and less. It's kind of hard to look at their current tenure as anything other than a money grab. It's their right as owners, of course. I just wish people in this city would stop drinking the kool-aid. And I'm not saying people are dumb. Anything but. I just don't think people are getting both sides to the argument on issues like the stadium, the cap, the roster, etc. If they still want to support the EIG after they've heard both sides, good on them. I won't like it, but I can respect it. But a complicit media is preventing any balanced discussion from happening.

Okay, now I'm just angry. Thanks, Dennis. :)

Funny, I was reading somewhere how Lowe has pretty well guaranteed that there will definitely be a full on Oilers' farm team next year.

So they've seen the light?

Maybe next year they'll actually have some guys who can play on the back end as well.

A disappointing year all round.

Raffi looks hell bent on redemption so far. And MAP has some jump.

Is it just me, or have the Oilers been very successful with the long breakout pass the last couple games?

Its you rookie. :)

MAP is centring Torres and Pisani?

As has been discussed, it was neither dirty nor clean. Phaneuf hit him shoulder first into the board, but Nash's positioning left him vulnerable to a hit -- which is his fault.

I suggest you watch the thing again. And don't let your hatred/jealousy get in the way this time.

I've watched it lots. It was a dirty hit. And I have better things to do with my time than hate or be jealous of hockey players. Plus, I could suggest that you watch it without letting your love/worship get in the way. But you telling me that it was Nash's fault that another player chose to skate into him from behind and hit him into the boards tells me that you are incapable of doing so.

Anywaaay,

Good first period. Stortini seems determined to fight every player in the NHL. Havlat is dancing. Roli looks on point. Should be a good final two.

Listening on the net - sounds like MAP is doing alright. Glad to see him playing with Torres and Pisani.

How does he look to you Andy? Apparently MacT says he's getting 12 to 15 minutes tonight.

I think that's alright.

Andy,

Your man crush on the Dion is becoming, well, quite frankly, embarrassing. I used to think you hated him, but since you write about him every other post, I can only infer that, well, you love him.

It's okay. Let it out. We're all here for you.

Nice little defensive gem of a game.

Oilers!
