Friday Baseball Standings

**It's hard to understate just how unusual last night's Flames loss to the Avs was. The Flames have built their record over the past 1-2/3 seasons at home and against the NW Division (in that order). Prior to last night's game, here's the Flames home record against the 4 other NW teams since the lockout:
Obviously they've had trouble with the Canucks, but their combined home record against the other 3 teams is 17-0-1, 64GF/29GA. Neither the Avs nor the Wild had earned so much as a single point in 11 games at the Saddledome.

**3 games into his Flames career, I'm not sure I get Brad Stuart any more than I did before. I have a bad feeling that he's a jeans model, to use Billy Beane's notorious formulation. He appears to have all the tools. He can skate well, pass well, shoot well, and hit well. I'm just not sure yet that he can play NHL hockey all that well.

**If there's anything less likely in the NHL today than a gay player coming out of the closet, it's finding someone on the internet who thinks Craig Simpson should keep his job (heartiest laugh of the week: the "labels" at the bottom of this post).

**Go Hawks.

Comments:

Oh, Jeremy Brown...

Oh how I long for the day when people no longer quote moneyball...

Sabermetrics were so much cooler when nobody knew about them. Thanks for nothing Michael Lewis.

That's a good way of describing Stuart.

One of those guys who when you look at all of the tools he looks terrific but it just does not add up.

Million dollar arm, ten cent head?

And I find this funny:

3 games into his Flames career....

Three games in, and suddenly we're all experts on Brad Stuart? How about we give it a few more weeks before we start souring on this guy. Christ, brand new team, different system, new defensive partners, and a week in you're calling him a "jeans model."

Hey mclea, no dissenting views here, huh? :)

Actually I'm not a Flames fan nor am I judging him based on his first three games as a Flame.

I think he's a decent Dman but somebody (Muir at SI?) described him as a top pairing stud or some such thing last week.

Can't see it. To me he's like Morris - started his career strongly but never made the leap to the next level.

The Leafs hold the tiebreak with the Islanders so should be placed ahead of them. Thank you.

Hey, I hear they're celebrating the 67 Leafs tomorrow. Man, it must really suck to be a Leafs fans.

Game 6 of the '67 series is available on Youtube...

The guy that sits next to me at work was watching it as a joke this morning...

Anytime you are watching your team's most recent cup win in black and white is really kinda sad...

Works out well for Oilers fans though. I figure puck drop at 7:30, so I can go to my own game first.

Some times is does suck. I am sure it sucks just as much to have entered a season convinced your team was a Stanley Cup contender only to see them 6 points out in mid-February.

That 17 year drought is picking up momentum Andy ;)

ah ppp, you poor bugger.

40 years without even getting to the finals

and ever year they're contenders to boot

at least according to Tony from Woodbridge

;)

Wow. Both SC Finalists below the line, eh?

I guess the only legacies we'll be seeing any more are playing net in St. Louis.

I firmly believe that Craig Simpson should keep his job*.

* - as a carpet salesman or whatever awful advertisements he was appearing in, like, five years ago.

Myself, I long for the day when people no longer confuse Moneyball with actual sabermetric source material. Reading a biography of Einstein doesn't mean you understand general relativity.

Oh, cmon. Don't be such a hater. The book is tremendous, and is about so much more than just sabermetrics.

How the hell did the Canucks win that game tonight? I watch the last period, and the Hawks were all ove them. All over them. I can't remember seeing a game that lopsided. The Canucks looked terribly slow. Terribly slow. Yet they still won. GAH!

mclea, sometimes I get the impression that you come to the site once a week, speed read, pick up what you want to pick up, and then fire up the comments.

I'm not sure how else you'd read "I've never really gotten a great handle on Brad Stuart's abilities... How good is he, anyway?" and today's "I'm not sure I get Brad Stuart any more than I did before" and then make that comment. I'm not an expert on Brad Stuart. If you want me to state that a 4th & different way, I might have to consult a thesaurus.

This is precisely the point. If you gave me Brad Stuart's (A) scouting reports and (B) results-oriented pro career report with the name blacked out, I'd ask why the former doesn't seem to be reflected in the latter.

Any idea, Mclea? Is there a reason why I should be impressed with Stuart, that doesn't sound like it's coming out of the mouth of one of Billy Beane's scouts in 2002?

I'm not saying that it was a shitty acquisition. I'm saying that I wish there was more evidence that he's effective. And that if he's not here in Calgary, I suspect that it's because that's who he is, not because he had a bad couple of months.

How the hell did the Canucks win that game tonight?

Trevor Linden played his ass off tonight, and we got a nice goal by Matt Cooke. You remember him, don't you, Grabia? :-)

The sooner Ryan Smyth gets traded for Bulis and Chouinard (and whatever picks you feel you need), the sooner the Canucks can plan their parade route.

Enter Eric Brewer. When I think of Stuart Brewmeister always comes to mind...all those tools, looks like he should be doing so much more...but yet he doesn't.

That said Brewer does seem to be having quite a decent season for St. Lou this year.

Also I know Temujin has to be joking, cause what team is going to take your two enigmatic free agent signings off your hands and give you an asset?

Any bets on a first-round loss? In five?

Linden played his ass off...that's funny. If you count running around his own end with the rest of his teammates for an hour, sure.
