Oilers Game Day-Canes

Record: 15-11-3Record: 14-10-2
Preview

***Big Update*** According to the Oilers home page, Jussi will be getting the start tonight. The Journal has it, too. Anyone know why? Is Roloson hurt? Or is MacT concerned with getting Jussi some playing time, and figures it's better to do against an Eastern Conference opponent, and a team he did well against in the playoffs?

• We all know the deal. I don't need to explain this again, do I? Okay. Quick recap. They won. We lost. They used to be my second favorite, but now they are just number two. Joey-Camel-Vag-Face is their captain, and Clay Aikens is their number one fan. We like their bloggers, but hate their team. Plus, they couldn't beat the Flames last night. We HATE the Canes.

• Black Dog sums up my current feelings about the Oilers pretty well. Their key guys did the things they had to do against the Canucks to get the win. Hit, cycle, shoot, and kill penalties. Pretty simple. Yet the question remains: why haven't they been able to do it all year? I would add, why haven't they been able to do it for an entire game? This team operates in spurts, playing poor to good hockey for large chunks, interspersed with moments of excellent to brilliant hockey. The second period against the Canucks was the perfect example of the Oilers season. They played hard for about five minutes, scored a couple of quick goals, and then fell back. Played hard for another couple minutes, created a turnover, got another goal, then fell back. Outshot 19-9 on the period, yet came out on top. The Edmonton Oilers are 6-3-1 in their last ten, and currently sit in first in the Northwest Division. But it sure doesn't feel like that. This team is all kinds of perplexing. Though the theory doesn't match up, Bill Simmons has just given me another apt nickname for the Oilers: The Tantaloilers.

• As Lowetide told us yesterday, the Oilers are going to retire Mark Messier's jersey this season. The Journal is reporting that it will be on February 27th, against the Coyotes. I say, couldn't they have picked a better team for us to lose to on that occasion?

• I won't even try and pick apart John Buccigross' Western Conference All-Star picks, because the mistakes are so glaring assistance is not required. He does raise one interesting point, however, and that is that 14 of the league's Top 15 scorers come from the Eastern Conference. 18 of the Top 20, and 24 of the Top 30, are from the East. Better offence, or terrible defence and goaltending?

• This...is my least favorite commercial of all-time. Not only do I have to suffer through the lame Phaneuf part, but I have to see Commodore holding the Cup, and JCVF doing whatever the hell kind of happy jig he's doing there at the end. It stabs my heart, punches my gut, pokes my eyes, and kicks my gonads at the same time.

D-Lee, Acid Queen, and Cason have the story for the Canes. We meet again, my friends. We meet again.

Prediction: 4-2, Oilers. San Fernando with the hat-trick, and Lupul with the solo. Cam Ward's SV% will be around .880, yet every single person involved with TSN's coverage will rave all night long about his extraordinary skills as a goaltender.

Comments:

18 of the Top 20, and 24 of the Top 30, are from the East. Better offence, or terrible defence and goaltending?

After years and years of being slow, trapping teams, players and coaches finally are enjoying their freedom.

Meanwhile in the west, Vancouver now traps, Calgary plays "Flames" hocky, Lemaire is Lemaire, Hithcock is back, Detroit wins on defence, Dallas is Dallas, and MacT preaches "puck management" and deploys a 1-2-2 "press."

Swing pendulum swing.

Grabia spittin' vitrol today. I like it.

Don't forget Erik "Keith Fatchunk wanna-be" Cole. I hate that guy.

Oh yeah, Buccigross' All-Star choices?

Markus Naslund but no Ryan Smyth. That says it all right there.

on Jussi,

Probably just the coach playing a hunch. Get that playoff level performance going again.

That and Roli will probably have to be out at the airport doing a pre-flight checklist before the trip to Dallas.

Probably just the coach playing a hunch.

My favorite words. Shudder.

Allstars - Naslund?

What about
Rick Fuckin Nash
and
Jonathan Isn't Cheechoo hurt?

I know I'm a homer but,
Jigger over
Dwayne "Weight of the City" Roloson?
Look who's playing in front of Jigger!

Keee-rice-stuh.

Yeah, Bucci's all-star choices are ridiculous. Rick Nash and Jonathan Cheechoo shouldn't be anywhere near the all-stars based on their play thus far.

And Kiprusoff, the reigning Vezina winner, is currently top 5 in pretty much every category, but isn't among the top 3 WC 'tenders? Right.

Is TSN going to punish everyone with the 'Canes Cup Celebration Commercial multiple times tonight?

Look who's playing in front of Jigger!

Meh. Give it to Rolie or Kipper or whoever, I'd rather Jiggy had an extra day off anyway.

Sorry, just can't feign excitement for the least meaningful game of the year.

Sorry, just can't feign excitement for the least meaningful game of the year.

Agreed, especially since the league has made the criterion for selection popularity. You know who's a starter in the WC if the voting ended today? Martin Havlat. He's been out for two months. According to this press release, the WC starting lineup would actually look like this if voting ended today:

Forwards: Sakic, Thorton, Havlat
Defence: Niedermayer, Lidstrom
Goal: Turco

Sorry, just can't feign excitement for the least meaningful game of the year.

C'mon earl, until this year that's all mighty comma Ducks fans did.

ZING!

C'mon earl, until this year that's all mighty comma Ducks fans did.

Jeez, don't you guys have a Duckhating thread somewhere? Or is this just a bash thread for "teams that ruined our offseason"?

Sorry, just can't feign excitement for the least meaningful game of the year.

When did the Islanders play Columbus? ;)

- PDO

Jeez, don't you guys have a Duckhating thread somewhere? Or is this just a bash thread for "teams that ruined our offseason"?

It's kind of vain to assume that we care that much about a team we eliminated in five games in the post-season. The greater point is that the Ducks have bored the hell out of us for 12 years.

is this just a bash thread for "teams that ruined our offseason"?

Earl, you're making this too easy buddy... the only team that ruined our off-season was the 'canes.

OT, but should we start a write-in campaign for Garth Snow as NHL executive of the year? The Islanders are in first place, Blake, Kozlov and Yashin are producing, chris simon is a +9, only two eastern teams have allowed fewer goals and if you think Garth is just a puppet, doesn't that leave Charles Wang(!) as the one making the genius moves?

Earl, you're making this too easy buddy... the only team that ruined our off-season was the 'canes.

What would be the name of the team that consists of Chris and Lauren Pronger, Pat Morris, Al Strachan, Andy Strickland, and Mike Brophy?

Can't blame the Ducks for acquiring certain individuals because they were available...the people who made the decision and those who delivered it to us with inconsistency of information however....they can all rot in hell.

PS: Yes I know I sound like a jilted, bitter ex-girlfriend when it comes to 25 Anaheim. Just thought I'd make that perfectly clear.

Good luck tonight, and thanks for the words.

But your prediction is wrong. ;)

I dislike seeing you with that Cup, D-lee.

I suppose, but I bet the amount of Edmonton ink spent talking about the Hurricanes and the amount of Edmonton ink talking about one specific Duck isn't that close a contest.

I have my own alternate theory why Jussi gets the start.

It starts with SQUEE!

I suppose, but I bet the amount of Edmonton ink spent talking about the Hurricanes and the amount of Edmonton ink talking about one specific Duck isn't that close a contest.

Yes, that has nothing to do with the fact we've played the Ducks twice already, and will play them twice more.

I meant offseason ink, but hey, far be it for a know-nothing Cali boy to tell the legit Oil-bleeders how shitty their offseason was and to whom their bitterness should be directed.

I heard Magoo is our ref tonight. The Canes and Magoo? Boofest!!!

"The Edmonton Oilers are 6-3-1 in their last ten, and currently sit in first in the Northwest Division. But it sure doesn't feel like that."

I hate to make the comparison, because of the response that it'll get, but your statement reminds me of my feelings about the Flames last year. They were frustrating to watch at times, even when they won. You never had the feeling that they were in control, yet they finished first in the division.

I was going to do a post about McGeough, figuring he would be banished out east and not seen by the Oilers all year. But I couldn't find a referees schedule for the year, and then he popped up in Vancouver the other night. I'm starting to develop a Benjamin-esque level of disgruntlement with the NHL office. The lack of punishment for some pretty dirty shots (cough...Ovechkin...cough...Armstrong), the fan voting for the All-Star game, and the McGeough fiasco are all examples.

How much of the game is TSN going to miss because they won't cut out of the Ottawa game? And how many times will Maguire refer to JCVF as "monster"? Any bets?

I think that comparison is apt -- last year I often felt my Flames were not in control of games, but they seemed to win them anyway. That's the impression I get watching the Oilers lately. They run around a lot, seem unfocussed and scattered, yet still manage to win more often than not.

Conversely, in the last month, the Flames have been in absolute control of a lot of games (including last night against a good Carolina team). It took a couple of months, but the Flames seem to have their shit together now. The Oil, not so much.

Go Canes.

The announcers on 630 CHED were laughing hysterically when Stoll won a faceoff the other night - but gloved the puck back. The linesman made the call.

They were raving about "What? And McGeough didn't call it?"

we had it. we fucking had the Cup. Game 1 will forever haunt my dreams until the day I die...
When Pronger scored and gave his little fist pump, I proceeded to give one too. When Ethan got the fluke goal, the thought "this game's gonna be a laugher!"...I've never felt so dejected after game 1 in my life

the worst part is that Carolina essentially played 23 minutes in Game 1 and that was what won them the Cup

Jordan

it's catharsis time! let it out people! i've been thinking about Game 1 and Game 6 all day today.

It's an open wound, it's Rick Monday. It will not go away.

Thankfully, our game started late, after the 6-2 blowout ended. Anyone else watch Ovechkin with anger? I can't believe he was only fined $100 for that hit on Brierre. How insulting.

I hope Stoll's not out, too. My Lord.

After seeing Stoll take not one, but two for the team, my respect level for him shot through the roof. Geez.

When he got up and hobbled to the bench the fans gave him super props, which was pretty cool.

And i wonder how many times Gord-o will mispronounce "Stoll" and
Staal"

Winnie shines! Have I been here before? I don't like this feeling.

Forecheck is looking awesome. Keep er up, boys!

The long stick got Winnie that goal. Ward had no idea he could curl it around and get off a shot like that. Beauty!

Lupul Schmupul.

See that little hint of an end-to-end rush by Smid?

The guy is gonna be great. In the meantime, it would be nice if any of our goddamn Dmen could get a shot on net during the powerplay--

DAMN THEY JUST SCORED! Lick my ass, Adams.

Some thoughts:

Maguire saying Joey Camel will end up in the Hall of Fame. In the words of Chris Rock, "are you outta your fucking mind?"

Reasoner with the mic on, talking to Magni. Awesome.

Our PP really stinks. I'd rather we just play even strength all night. Our PP is a momentum killer.

Tie game. Damn.

Anyone else getting a playoff vibe with this game?

Raffi's ON tonight...keep it up guy!

Anyone else getting a playoff vibe with this game?

Full on. Stoll is terrific tonight, Winnie too. This is a great game.

Jason Smith got a shot on net...and SCORED!!!

Torres winning the face-off for Gator's goal, wow. Nice to see the recently quiet guys contribute. When was the last time the Oilers took a late-period goal to the dressing room to start the third?

San Fernando.

What happened to Brindamour? Jesus, I'm actually getting to see a game for a change and I'm still missing stuff.

Pisani. Cane killer.

What happened to Brind'amour, anyways? I missed that bit.

Oooooohh.
Freaky double brain-sharing post.

FERNANDO!!!

San Fernando scores, and Joey Camel Vag Face is gone for the night. IT'S A FESTIVUS MIRACLE!!!

This thought just popped into my head - Pisani is a real Cane killer!

You're a funny guy, Black Dog.

Ok, Grabia - so here's the deal - remember what I wrote the other day?

Since then - shall we recap? Shutout over the Canucks led by Horcoff all world effort. Lupul scores a beauty goal. Torres is 1 and 1 and plays mean. Stoll hurts someone.

Tonight - Stoll is Ethan Moreau incarnate, Torres wins a draw to set up a goal, San Fernando scores, they are a dump and chase, close down the neutral zone, D smashing, chip it out machine.

So, remind me again. Did the season start on Monday or am I missing something?

Its been said.

That was pretty funny though - simulposting the same thoughts.

My God Stoll is taking a beating. And I think Maguire is gonna sex him up tonight.

Maguire is a dink. The word was coined for him.

Andy what happened to JCVF?

I think Pierre Maguire is giving Stoll a reacharound. You'd think Stoll was the second coming the way he's talking.

Agreed, Pat. Now if only we could get a PP goal. Come on boys...

Once again a simulpost - this is really quite strange.

And the PP actually looked strangely competent.

Hmmm.

Andy what happened to JCVF?

No clue. Didn't see it. Maybe he lost a faceoff and just decided he didn't want to play anymore. He does have Hall of Fame faceoff numbers, you know.

Hey, did you guys know that Stoll is a hero? A monster? And a warrior?

Yeah, that comment is beyond bizarre. A good player who had a very good year last year and has had a very good start this year.

Of course it is the HHOF.

Maybe he got jealous because Maguire's eye wondered to some younger more handsome future hall of famer?

They should just wire Reasoner every game and do away with Maguire.

I would pay for that.

Marty is a funny guy.

"get me twelve shots and I guarantee you one - I do have an 8% shooting % you know"

Atta be Horc - fucking Williams is the fucking dirtiest palyer in the league I swear!

"Rod Brind'Amour left the game in the third period with a lower body injury and did not return."

...From the Oilers game day site. Nice and vague, as always.

Hey Jim Rutherford,

I know you want to only take the bus to games all year, but I'd like to see your team out here more. This is a great hockey game. Boo on you and your eastern colleagues for quashing schedule changes.

Amen to that Andy.

Marty is a funny guy.

Ya, his stuff with Thoresen tonight was awesome. To paraphrase:

"Hey, they have the mic on me tonight, so if there's anyone in Norway you haven't talked to in a while, and they get Canadian shows on satellite, here's your chance to talk to them."

Is that what he was saying? I missed that.

He's funny though - I presume you saw his Hot Oil footage - he just seems like a regular guy - he sounds like the frigging guys I play with on weekends.

Glad he's back.

What a shocker that Kristy Hedican went down like a ton of bricks on that one.

Maguire looks like a penis with a mic - I swear. Nice camera angle.

Nice head on the guy. God he's a bandwagon jumper - a few weeks back when the Oilers lost to the Wings he was just running them down. Now they're the 78 Habs.

Tonight's three stars as chosen by me:

3. Winchester
2. Jussi
1. Stoll

Good game boys.

I thought he got sniped from the clock tower.

Man, do I hate the Canes.

I didn't think I really cared but tonight brought it all back.

And now we don't see them again until June.

My favorite thing about Maguire is how he takes what he sees in one game and then applies it to an entire season or career. Lots of colour guys do it, but he does it better than any other. So Stoll busts his ass off for a game, and suddenly he's been Mark Messier his entire career. Bam. Just like that.

Pisani tipped that Smith shot too, Andy.

He had the deuce tonight.

Man I love Fernando. Not as much as you - that's not humanly possible- but I'd love to see him get on a roll.

That was, by far, our best performance of the year. It was also the best game to watch all year.

Finally.

That game felt good.

So was Stoll the MONSTER!!!!!11one performer of the game?

TVU crapped out near the end of the second.

And now people finally *get* my adoration of Reasoner.

He's so damn clever. :)

I was screaming for Pisani to get the empty netter, because I also think that second goal will be changed to him. If he was the guy who hurt JCVF, I'll count that as a goal, and my hat-trick prediction will be complete.

Ewing Theory in effect for the Oilers right now. Knock on wood, but we could be looking back fondly on the Hemsky and Smytty injuries by the end of the year.

Stoll was Mr. Everything, Jussi put a demon to rest, and it looks like we have a team(!)again, boys and girls.

Only thing missing was the vaunt.

We were in town last weekend, took my kid to his first NHL game Saturday. Why the hell couldn't we have had the section 128 row 8 seats for this one?

Greetings to Julian - yep he was. Actually he's the second coming of Messier - they're retiring #11 and #16 in February.

Andy - terrific game and you may be right. Damn, Stoll played well. Torres played well. You know what I think about Horc. And the rooks did what they could. Its the family feelgood movie of the year.

And Loxy - Marty is one cool guy. Mic him every game I say!

Mike W., BDHS...this drink is for you.

GOILERS!!!

Finishing this beer and off to bed.

Damn that fourth win came six months too late.

But it was a beauty win nonetheless.

Sweet dreams of Horc's goofy mug again tonight.

Wow, where was this Stoll all season? I wouldn't be surprised if Maguire visited Stoll in the dressing room after the game!! (wink wink)

Let's see, the Oilers forechecked, they hit and were physical all night. Hmmm, and ended up with a damn nice win. Maybe we should try this more often in the future?? Which team shows up next game?

Damn, I just now get this game 8 talk. Frack, am I dense. Thanks Black Dog.

If you guys hate Pierre as much as I do we'll all be fast friends. I suspect he's one of those people who can auto-fellate themselves.

I like Maguir when he sticks to breaking down the play. It's when he wanders off into other areas that he loses me.

Anonymouse: The Isles' success begins and ends with Ted Nolan and Neil Smith.

Awesome game last night -- wish there was a rematch this year. Where was that injury to Joe Camel in Game 6? And Stoll was pretty good last night. It did look like Pisani deflected the shot, but I can live with Gator getting his first in forever, even though that means my call of 2G, including the winner, would be wrong.

Me, I don't think that hit was dirty. Looked like Williams was going for a regular hit on Lupul, Lupul lifted his leg to go around, and clipped Williams on the hip. Saw the replay three times, and every time, it was knee-on-femur. Good on Horc for standing up, though.

Marty is the bestest mic guy ever.

Good point on the Ewing Theory, Andy. I was thinking last night that this may have been exactly what the Oil needed to wake up and start playing like we know they can, rather than sitting back and waiting for Smyth or Sykora to do something.

Stoll blocking shots was like Al Pacino at the end of Scarface.

Ha! Guess what Cam Wards Save % was?

spot on, Andy!

Beautiful -- I think the answer to the question "Eastern Conference - great scoring, bad defense, or bad goaltending." Has been answered.

Saw the game from 136-row 7.
Pretty tentative game in the first period, but the Oil amped it up. The Torres-Stoll-Pisani line really stepped up and left the Staal line for dead, that is the step up we need these boys to take. If they can regularily beat down the opposition's second best unit, that would leave a reunited Hemsky-Sykora to destroy the scrubs. BTW F'n Erik Cole is a puss -- hate him too.

On the Williams hit, coincidental -- but I really like how Horcoff showed no hesitation in tossing Williams. Obviously with the score 3-1 that was a fine decision.

As an aside, I really wanted MAB to clip Andrew Ladd. I think it was Greene who stepped into him along the boards, so that's good too.

The rookie line was decent (heh, which rookie line?) despite giving up the goal. MAP seems to be getting his bearings, has a super wrist shot and is starting to make good decisions/plays with the puck.

Better signs of life from all the right players. Solid game by Jussi.

TSN is reporting that Hemsky won't be back until January, so Andy better be right about the Ewing Theory.

Andy what does JR Ewing have to do with the Oilers?

Is it an "oil" reference?

I don't get these Alberta references.

Damn!

I linked to the original theory in the post above, BD. Look for it to become the Drew Bledsoe theory some time soon.

My bet is BD is pulling your leg.

Yeah, he's done it to me before...

Cheeky bugger...

I think steven is trying to pull a fast one on me - everyone knows Bill Simmons is that pudgy little gay guy - you know, the fitness guru with the perm.

Andy, who's this Drew Bledsoe guy?
