A Message To You, Rory
In my Oilers-Canucks preview, I forgot to encourage everyone to vote Rory Fitzpatrick into the upcoming All-Star Game in Dallas. Mirtle has been all over this story, and even did an interview with CBC Radio Edmonton about it this morning. If you have the time, bring up the line, and write-in a vote for Rory.
Comments:
I have been voting for Rory since I first read of this on Mirtle's site. Even if he doesn't make it to Dallas, it's great to have something entertaining to bring up when the NHL conversation begins, rather than simply berating Bettman, debating the 'new NHL', and bemoaning current Oiler woes, I can now tell those poor under-blogged friends of mine about this crusade! Much like I did during the days of the Mac-T fine fundraiser, which brings me to a question, whatever became of that?

I sent the cheque in, and am waiting on a receipt. Once it comes, I'll post a picture. I've also kept all the money in PayPal still, just in case something really weird happens. Then I can still send the money back to everyone. I'm sure it will be fine, though, and am looking forward to getting the receipt.
I'd love to see him get in just to see what the NHL would do. I get the feeling they'd bring him to Dallas but they wouldn't aknowledge the circumstances and they'd treat him just like any regular allstar.
I'd like to point out to everyone that this is a vote for the starting lineup, not the whole shebang.
"So I'm the only one who doesn't think it's
particularly funny to (a) deny an All-Star placing to
somebody who actually might have earned it and (b)
turn Rory Fitzpatrick and his career into an elaborate
postmodern joke? Fair enough."
a) There will still be roster spots available. It's
only the starting lineup. And the system is so flawed,
I'm sure there will be plenty of deserving people
denied. The whole point is that it's a flawed system.
The NHL made the All-Star game into a popularity
contest. Since that is the criterion the league has
created, Fitzpatrick's placement in the roster is no
different than Chris Pronger's.
b) Making Fitzpatrick into a joke is a reasonable
concern. The one article where he is quoted, he seems
to be laughing about it. But it probably does piss him
off, especially since a bunch of people who couldn't
hold his jock-strap are the ones making light of his
talents. It probably would have been a better idea to
create a fictional player for a write-in. Now THAT
would have made the league look bad.
