It Brings Tears To My Eyes

Beautiful. Glove tap to Kukla.

Comments:

I'm torn between wishing he was down so long because it really hurt, and knowing that he likely was down so long because he was pretending to be hurt. The latter is why I wish the former.

Colin White will never have to buy himself a beer again.

A "masticating hit" - isn't masticating what cows do when they chew their food?

Ya, but generally speaking it means to grind or crush. I noticed the usage, too. In this instance, I would have preferred "emasculating."

Leave it to BoA to drop some bovine knowledge on the rest of us.

Avery's a good player though. Why does everyone hate him again? I can't even remember anymore.

That was a joke, right?

RE: Anyway, here's an important thing to remember tonight, Pronger haters!

Andy, why was your post removed from the BOC site? Could you post it here? Damned censorship!

Uhhhhh...

You are aware which teams are from Alberta and which are from California, right?

I think he meant my initial comment. I deleted it myself, Pat. Typo.

And doesn't this belong in the other thread? I'm really confused. I actually had a post jump spots on me today.

Sorry, Andy. I hopped threads. I'll leave now.

I got your back riversq. Avery puts up points and he's one of the few athletes with anything interesting to say. I mean, Shane Doan is the most over-rated player in the league, to name just one thing Avery's said recently. If fans want to hate a useless cheap-shotter, how about Ville Niemenenenen.

he's one of the few athletes with anything interesting to say

You mean, like calling Georges Laraque a "monkey", and then claiming that Larque made it up? Ya, that's hilarious.

Did Avery really say that about Doan? That's pretty sharp actually. I'm not sure Doan's the most overrated but he's certainly up there.

No, I'm serious Grabia. What has he done? IIRC, I think he trotted out the Quebecois/visor thing, but that's all I can remember. I also remember him calling out a few players here and there like the recent Doan one that Art mentioned, but where are the horrible acts? I know he's made some bad hits and sure he's a shit disturber on the ice as well, but he's effective and I can't remember any cheapshots leading to injury.

Uh, read what I just linked to.

Ah yes, the BG thing. I remember that now. Athletes will say anything to get an edge over their opponent. I don't like it but I wouldn't read too much into it frankly.

Wouldn't "read" too much into it? You taking courses at the Richards/Gibson Institute?

Are you accusing me of being a racist now Grabia?

Newsflash: These guys aren't all upstanding citizens or even remotely likable people. (I've got another one for you - Santa Claus isn't real either.)

I'm not sure Avery's any different from most hockey players, except of course he says what he thinks to the media and people generally don't like that for some strange reason.

I almost googled Richards/Gibson Institute.
I'm with Andy - there's no defense or justification for what Avery said to Georges.
Nowhere near as bad, but I also remember Avery flipped out on a Kings assistant coach during a practice late last season.

This is hockey we're talking about right? Where in the "heat of battle" one player is allowed to assault another player with his fists (google, oh, I don't know, "Beukeboom") and be punished with a 5-minute trip to the bin, and we're worried that Avery rips Laraques for being a "monkey." If you're an athlete and you let that bother you, you're a pussy, or maybe a golfer or tennis pro.

What bothers me (well the monkey comment bothers me for one) about Avery is that he runs off his mouth and then doesn't back it up.

Yap yap yap and then turns and hides.

I have no problem with a guy saying whats on his mind, yapping, whatever you call it. A guy like Roy for example or Brett Hull.

If you are going to talk then back it up. I can't stand guys like Avery or Maltby who talk talk talk and then won't stand up when someone comes to take a piece of them.

Avery just comes off as a massively conceited dink who thinks he's the league badass.

Even without the Laraque comment, I'd still dislike him.

Are you accusing me of being a racist now Grabia?

Nope. But the "read" comment was off. We shouldn't be justifying or rationalizing a person's statement just because he's "supposed" to be stupid. I don't read much into a guy calling a black man a "monkey" other than that he is a racist. Ask Ian Lapierriere what he thinks about Avery, for backup on that point. The guy is a bigot, a coward, and I don't care if he's a professional athlete or not.

If trash-talking were deserving of a beat-down, how would an NBA game ever get completed? And wouldn't every play in the NFL descend into some kind of M*A*S*H/Longest Yard fiasco? We've become so sensitive about words. How many times do you suppose NHL players call each other "fags" out there? Is it possible that Mike Comrie's never been called a "f***in' midget" on the ice? Or that Danny Alfredsson's never been yelled at for being a "chicken Swede"? Not only was John Bucyk's nickname "Chief," I think that's what his biography was titled, and he was about as, ahem, First Nation as Patrick Thoreson. Is "Blackhawks" a tribute or racism? How about "Crusaders"?
If Laraques was a man and not a relationship-show radio host, he would have focused on finishing his checks and putting up points, not crying to the media that Sean Avery called him a bad name. He drew attention to himself as a victim, which is the weakest act of all.

There are no excuses for marginalizing someone. Be it to there faces or not, whomever you or they are, and no matter your occupation. Period. It is possible to be a good hockey player and a racist. It is impossible to be a good person and a racist/homophobe/sexist/whatever.
