Insult to Injury

It's not a very happy time to be a Canucks fan right now. The team is struggling, and their blueline is somewhat decimated. They surrender a 2-0 lead on Saturday to lose to the Flames in regulation. Pavel Bure is passed over for the HHOF in favour of Dick Duff. And now this:
NHL introduces Mark Messier Award

[...] Messier, with input from the league, will select a player in each month who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice.

Comments:

Bwa Ha! That, my good friend, is a hell of a post.

Oh mercy. Oh, oh, mercy. I was laughing even before I hit the TSN link. And then I read the Canucklehead punchline:

. . . He is also a former captain of the Vancouver Canucks."

Explain more? You dislike the type of award or dislike Messier?

Here is the very first post on this weblog, by way of explanation.

Every time I manage to remove the "Messier years" from my Canuck memory, some assclown has to go and remind us all that he held the captaincy in Vancouver.

The fucker even "unretired" Wayne Maki's number 11, and wore it despite it being unofficially retired.

The "Steve Yzerman award" for leadership I can understand. But Mark Messier? Geez. He "led" the Canucks to a combined winning precentage of .400 in his three seasons.

From that post, you consider Messier to be the dirtiest player ever. Dirtier over, hmmmm let's pick Samuelsson?? Really?

Note: the assclown I'm referring to is the Canadian Press writer, not you Sac :-)

No, what I said was that he was the dirtiest player in NHL history "who is best known for something besides his thuggery." Being a dirty player is exactly what Samuelsson is best known for.

Jesus. Am I ever glad that my musings about signing him to replace on of our centres last year wasn't listened to. Hell, I think Peca was probably even more effective than the Moose would have been.

I always loved seeing how uncomfortable he looked while dating Madonna.

You know what? I still think that the Moose would have made a decent fourth-line centre last year. Ah, well. Maybe next year he'll lace them up and get 116 points...

...don't mind me. I'm insane. I think he was the greatest player of all time.

Does "leadership" include wrapping a car around a post and "forgetting" to report it until the next day? Mentioning Messier's name on the West Coast can get you shot at in some circles. His years of mailing it in will be difficult to surpass, especially if you include his second stint with NYR.

Nothing destroys the chemistry of a dressing room like a failure to comply with provincial law on the reporting of car accidents. I've heard that, on the Oilers, Staios and Smith are both HUGE into by-laws. The real reason that Pronger left? He jaywalked on Whyte and it just ruined his relationship with them.

Brilliant, MC.
