But, he's not, so...

"If I were him, I'd shut up for a while and try not to say anything quite so asinine..."

-- Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun, 2006.11.26

Comments:

Oh yeah, the opinion is fine, but WHOAAA did that sentence ever jump out at me.

What did Ron Maclean do to atract such an attack from Simmons?

Yeah, that's the other eye-bulger in the piece: Simmons criticizing someone else in the media for lacking modesty and humility.

Specifically Julian, Maclean had Colin Campbell on HNIC last night and ripped him hard. He doesn't like The New NHL -- he showed 10+ clips from the ANA-SJS game of guys playing like total suckholes, "because they're afraid".

As for why holding this minority opinion makes him a Hockey-is-Me egomaniac, your guess is as good as mine.

Ahh, makes me an even bigger fan of Maclean. Big balls on the man, nobody else in the media seems to be willing to go beyond the superficial platitudes when talking about the changes to the "new NHL".

He's getting a bit of a reputation for it,unfortunately, because sooner or later people will start tuning him out.

BTW, future blog post idea Matt... the four or five hockey people you'd most like to meet at your favourite bar, and topics of discussion which would follow.

I'd have to think about it, but Maclean would be on my list for sure.

I've long respected MacLean for doing some of the better interviews in sports, if only because he doesn't accept the brush-offs as answers. He interviewed Sheila Copps in 2002 at SLC and asked her about funding Canadian athletes, she came back with something about funding CBC and paying him and he didn't let her off the hook at all.

Plus, the Bettman interview where Bettman kept touching him is a defining moment in Canadian history.

Wish Simmons would shut up for a while and try not to say anything quite so asinine.

Blowhard.

Agreed on that MC - I don't necessarily agree with MacLean, esp. his "We need clutching and grabbing so guys don't get hurt" argument but the guy is good.

Waiting for CBC to ket him go too.
