Wolverines!

Bob McKenzie is reporting that the Russian hockey club Yaroslavl has filed a lawsuit against the two NHL teams from Alberta, as well as the NHL, over the signing of Alexei Mikhnov and Andrei Taratukhin. This story will probably get bigger, as it will likely fan out into Metallurg doing something about losing Malkin, and we will all end up knowing way too much about the minutiae of Russian law.

I am intrigued by the fact that both Calgary and Edmonton went through all the effort to get these guys over here, and neither has played a single minute in the NHL. Seems like alot, for naught.

Comments:

Now Andrew, we all know Stalingrad wasn't rebuilt in a day.

Patience. Patience.

No. I want my Traktor Boy now!!!

sound of me shuffling off to my room, and slamming the door

I hate you!!!

The Oilers being concerned about legal matters pertaining to Mihknov is probably the most logical explanation for why Brad Winchester keeps getting icetime.

You are giving credit to the teams where none is due. The onus was on the players (and their agents) to quit and make their way over here on their own, to prevent tampering charges. Hence Malkin's "Cold War Airport Dash" took place without any Penguins employees in attendance.

Malkin's supposed to be ready to play. Timing coincidence? I think not.

Uh huh. Sure. I'm sure that is the stance the teams will be taking, as well. I doubt that it is true, however.

doesn't this smack of "waaa, i want my superstar back?"

Actually, it smacks more of 'waahhh, I want a lot a lot of money.'

I can't imagine what a New York court can do to enforce a Russian contract governed by Russian law which might be being breached in Canada. Intuitively, I'd say 'not much', but American courts take jurisdiction over odd things, so maybe they'd be able to do 'a little something'. But they won't do anything until the parties finish wrangling over jurisdiction, and that will be months and months yet.

They really want the court to award them a transfer fee without a transfer agreement.

Oh that should be fun, a Russian hockey team sueing a hockey team located in Alberta over a breach in Russian law in a court in New York. Good luck establishing jurisdiction, the applicability of the law or collecting damages.

The Calgary Flames have always been about building up their prospects to ensure good hockey in the future. Now they just have to worry about playing good hockey now... Ug...
