Oilers Game Day-Coyotes

Record: 2-6-0Record: 5-2-0
Preview

***Afternoon Update*** TRAKTOR BOY IS IN!!! And he'll get playing time on the powerplay, too. Good God Almighty. Luckily I had sweatpants on when I read this.

• Georges Laraque returns to Edmonton. It's going to be hard watching him in that jersey. He better get a f**ing standing ovation, is all I have to say. He may not be able to play on this team anymore, but he gave his heart and soul to this community. I'd rather lose with Le GG than win with a lot of the clowns in this league (Bertuzzi, I'm looking at you).

• Before I go any further, I just want to brag about my son, who had 4 goals and 3 assists in his hockey game yesterday. Carry on.

• Ethan Moreau is out for a week with a dislocated shoulder. Either J.F. Jacques or Alexei Mikhnov will draw in. I think we all know who I'd like to see. I better wear my rugby pants tonight.

• Check out the title on this story: "GRETZKY & COMRIE TO RING PINK IN OCTOBER." Hmm.

• In addition to Le GG, Gretzky and Comrie, Curtis Joseph and Mike Morrison are ex-Oilers losing in Phoenix.

• People who know better than me have been salivating over Coyotes defenceman Zbynek Michalek. I'll be interested to see if he's as easily concussed as his brother.

• Owen Nolan: 8 Games Played, 1 Goal, 1 Assist, 2 Points. 06/07 Salary: $1.225 Million.

• Jeremy Roenick: 8 Games Played, 0 Goals, 1 Assist, 1 Point. 06/07 Salary: $1.2 Million.

• Fernando Pisani: 7 Games Played...he's hurt. Leave him alone.

• It's scary that the Coyotes only have four points in eight games. Even scarier, the Flyers only have three.

• I am impressed with the performance of "The Pack," however. It takes skills to dance on ice and avoid crushing your skull.

• The Coyotes are 25th on the powerplay, at 9.8%. The teams that are worse: Tampa, Detroit, Philadelphia, Calgary and Ottawa.

• The Coyotes are 26th on the penalty kill, at 77%. The teams that are worse: Calgary, New York Islanders, Tampa, Boston.

• The Coyotes are 30th in Goal Against Per Game, at 4.12. Edmonton is 5th, at 2.00. The Coyotes are 29th in Goals Scored Per Game, at 2.00. Edmonton is 17th, at 2.86.

• Even the Oilers should have some success on the powerplay. The only opponent the Coyotes haven't given up a powerplay goal to is the Blues.

• Check out a new Oilers blog called Always On The Road. The proprietor, Kinger, is making some fantastic YouTube Videos, including the MAB video that Cosh linked to, and the Hemmer Dangle versus Detroit. I imagine a solid market for an Oilers video blog, and so I hope Kinger keeps up the good work. It'll save me having to sort through YouTube all the time.

• How bad is Phoenix? So bad that not a single dork has created a Coyotes blog. Or does that speak to how bad the Coyote fan-base is? Actually, I found one blog, through MVP, but the last post is from September, and is about the host trying to find someone else to manage the site. That is some sad shit.

• Now that I note all this, the Oilers will probably lose.

Prediction: 13-2, Edmonton. Sykora (2), Lupul (2), Smytty (2), Torres, Horcoff, MAB, Staios, Stoll, Hemsky, Roloson.

Comments:

Unless everyone on the Oilers team injure themselves punching Comrie then I doubt they're going to lose.

You forgot Reasoner and Winchester. They haven't scored yet this year, either.

4-3 Oil in OT. LeGG will just about jumps through the corner glass after scoring the tying goal in the third.

You forgot Reasoner and Winchester.

They don't make 3 million a year.

I think Roli will get the hattrick...and I really hope The Pack travels with the team on road games...is there a male version of squee?

I'm glad you're finally taking "the prediction" as serious as everybody else does.

I'm glad you're finally taking "the prediction" as serious as everybody else does.

Who said I ever took it seriously?

"Who said I ever took it seriously?"

Why have it?

According to your prediction, this is going to be the BEST GAME EVER, Grabia!

Also, mclea is the new jhuck.

I don't know... 13-2 seems pretty serious to me. A little close maybe. This team (PHO), seems to be in a little trouble. But what's the old addage... even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Hopefully we don't see the Oil squad that likes to play at the level of their opponents. And here's hoping Le GG is the best Coyote on the ice tonight.

Thanks for the support Alana. I'll let you get back to writing on Hot Oil, so you continue your mission of setting the "take female sports fans seriously" movement back 25 years.

Back to more pressing matters; did you hear that Raffi Torres is single? He's the new McDreamy.

For one thing, I don't think anyone would ever call Torres "McDreamy".

McPorny, maybe...

Also, it's called satire. And either you get it or you don't.

:P

I like JHuck. All Mclea does is come and bitch. It's getting tired. Here's my answer, Mclea: it's my site, so I'll write whatever the f**k I want. Better? Sacamano always gave predictions, so I'm attempting to honour his work. But unless I gain the ability to see into the future, the prediction is arbitrary.

Yo mclea, the only people who take ANY sports fans even a little seriously are other sports fans. Show me a sports fan with a solution to world hunger, sickness, and war and I'll show you a person who doesn't waste their time trolling sports blogs.

Thanks for "getting it," epinonymous. I didn't realize that the concept of "tongue-in-cheek" was so difficult to understand for some people.

Grabia, you're right -- jhuck is a bag of fucking sunshine compared to this dink.

I don't understand how compiling a list of the marital status of each Oiler is satirical or "tongue-in-cheek".

I also didn't realize BOA was forum set up for the purpose of stroking each other’s ego and patting each other on the back. Sorry for interrupting the groupthink.

If you don't want your opinions opened up to criticism, stop posting on a public blog.

i love you, mclea.

xoxo

<3

Haha. Apparently I'm having a rough start to my day.

I'll just shut the fuck up now.

It's not. I regularly get the crap kicked out of me by RiversQ, MC, Cosh, Matt, BDHS, Mirtle, Dennis, LT and others. But there we are arguing about hockey, and what I said about hockey, not about whether Matt posts enough or whether the predictions are important. Views about hockey opinion are always welcome.

:sob: Oh Andy, you had me at "regularly."

Just wait until the Oilers go 10/20 on the PP over a four game stretch. Then you're really in for it...

>so you continue your mission of setting the "take female sports fans seriously" movement back 25 years.

That is the funniest thing I've read all day.

The second I'm cornered into "taking a sports fan seriously," male or female, then I know I'm at the wrong party.

:sob: Oh Andy, you had me at "regularly."

I wasn't complaining. I'm the one who has the numbers to back me up. You're the calculator who keeps telling me, "it's coming." Yet I'm still waiting for the money shot. Essentially, you're the Ron Jeremy of hockey bloggers, RiversQ.

I like the 13-2 prediction, only I'd say Fernando pots 10 to bring him up to where we expect. Rollie will get 2 empty netters and Craig Simpson scores on the PP. Laraque and MAB score for PHX. Mikonov makes his debut by putting Comrie into the stands on his first shift.

Just saw a press release thatn Mikhnov will be playing tonight (including PP time)

It also said this: "In other lineup news, he said that in Moreau's absence, Raffi Torres will be playing on a line with Jarret Stoll and Fernando Pisani."

I love the oilers... what other team makes official press releases that they are moving a winger to another line?

I'm guessing they've been hearing a lot of complaints about it and wanted people to relax. Honestly though that is an obvious line combo Stoll-Torres-Pisani. Now we just have to get the other ones worked out. I'm still not sure about Hemsky not being with Horcoff and Smyth.

On a side note... as much as I like Hemmer, he really should not be on the point on the PP... keep him on the half boards.

Nice predictions Grabia... I noticed that someone was left off the list... the same someone who magically now has an ideal line combo... it is working already!

If he reads this site he's never coming back.

Whaddya mean? I'm reversing the mojo, to his benefit. We shouldn't even be talking about it, though. Move along.

Brilliant prediction -- I agree that Rolover is more likely to score than Pisser.

I'm expecting a big game from LeGG and Comrie. I'm also hoping the Coyotes leave it all on the ice tonight and have nothing left for tomorrow.

Go Flames.

Prediction: 13-2, Edmonton.

Afterwards, Hemsky's going to say, "Well, it's time they got their act together. They're ruining the whole league. They had better stop running a Mickey Mouse organization and put somebody on ice."

Well, he would, but the Devils put up more goals that night.

It's probably time that Gretzky heard it anyway.

Here is the link about Traktor Boy. That really made my day. Here's hoping he can help ease the pain of losing Chopper.

Jesus, didn't anyone else catch this Brownlee line:

Ethan Moreau's dislocated right shoulder is connected directly to the heart of the Edmonton Oilers.

One question: WHY?

Because Ethan Moreau has heart and soul, and heart and soul lead to victories. Haven't you seen the numbers on it? It's pretty impressive. Moreau's Heart Shares were 25 last year.

Numbers to back you up? Hee hee. All you've got is the overanalysis of a small sample size. Next you're going to tell me about Kenny Rogers' playoff renaissance.

The Oilers have a group of 5-6 players with substantial NHL track records that include decent to good PP production. Those numbers have already been laid out at IOF and at mudcrutch's site. I'm just making the logical assumption that they will replicate that performance given a large enough number of opportunities.

Hemsky's still stuck on 1 PPP in almost 39 min of PP TOI. He's the main cog in this PP and that kind of performance won't last given what he has proven he's capable of producing. They're going to have a hot streak.

Whoa, let's stop there - mclea's probably already feeling like the Flames are being ignored.

I'm just making the logical assumption that they will replicate that performance given a large enough number of opportunities.

It's just as logical, if not more logical, to assume that their future performance will replicate current performance, rather than how they did in the past.

He's the main cog in this PP and that kind of performance won't last given what he has proven he's capable of producing. They're going to have a hot streak.

So what is it? Normal performance, or a hot streak? I'm confused.

I don't want to be mean to Christie Chorley--she's already had a tough year--but she just reported on The Score that Laraque will be making his first appearance in Edmonton since being traded to the Coyotes. Perhaps it is she who is "setting the "take female sports fans seriously" movement back 25 years."

Regression to the mean, Andy.

I'm saying they're going to have a hot streak which will balance their current streak of suckitude which you lament in every other post. This will bring the overall performance to a reasonable level.

I'd guess they finish about 10th in the league in PPGF/hr - I'll say 7.2 PPGF/hr. I think that's good. I'm not sure of your position on relative measures.

Regression to the mean, Andy.

At this point, I'd think we'd all call it progression to the mean.

their current streak of suckitude which you lament in every other post

I'd be happy to stop talking about it. They just haven't left me much choice.

I'd guess they finish about 10th in the league in PPGF/hr - I'll say 7.2 PPGF/hr.

Now that is what I wanted to hear. A prediction! I don't know how 10th in PPGF is different than 10th in PP %, but I'll take it. Is that what you mean by relative measure, or do you guys just add /HR to everything?

Before I go any further, I just want to brag about my son, who had 4 goals and 3 assists in his hockey game yesterday. Carry on.

Andy, they should put him on the line with Stoll and Torres. That way Fernie can rest his knee and he'll have the Blonde Hombre to watch his back.

oil: 4 phoenix: 2

Even though the Coyotes suck this could still be a hockey team. They do have a lot of firepower and should be physical.

And I agree with Pisani. I know expectations have been raised but he gets very little even strenght time, even less PP time, and most of his ice time is spent with Ethan 'no finish' Moreau. I love Moreau, but lets face it, the dude is a terrible finisher.

Great PP goal! I would like to point out that Ozymandias was without a stick, though.

Nice to see Hemsky pick up a PPP. He's driving that bus for sure.

Andy, I know you're paying attention so please note that Horc's goal was pretty much a PP goal too.

pretty much a PP goal too

Pretty much? The PP was over. Too bad. Maybe if they were passing it around in the zone. But it was a rush and a shot from 65 feet out. No dice.

Holy fuck. That Sykora goal was retarded.

Only 9 more goals to go...

There you go, RiversQ. That was a nice fucking PP goal. Atta boy, Hemmer.

As i just msn'd my spouse when Hemsky scored-

"fuck he can just own the puck sometimes"

Hubby has now admitted to be being an Oil convert.

News from IR-land Surgery? Gone for regular season? Ouch...
