Gross, Point Blank

I don't know if I've ever been so frustrated by a win. 20 shots on net. 0-8 on the Powerplay. Skykora only playing 12 minutes, MAB playing almost 22. Cukoo I be. Cukoo. I've decided I'm going to start calling Craig Simpson Derek Zoolander, for obvious reasons.

The man has only one look for Christ's sake! Blue Steel? Ferrari? Le Tigra? They're the same face! Doesn't anybody notice this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

I'm going to guess we average less than 2 shots per Powerplay. Anyone want to check that for me? Anyone want to check what good Powerplays are averaging, and email it to me? For good measure, here is the Play-By-Play for all 8 Oilers Powerplays:

Tuesday Night Update: MC does some of the work for me:
"That the PP has sucked is backed up by their shots: they're at just 27.7 PPS/60 right now; last year's team was getting 48.8 PPS/60. The worst team in the league last year in this regard was LA; they were at 42.14 PPS/60."

Wednesday Morning Update Woo, baby. Dan Barnes has some choice words this morning. And again, as is so much the norm with sports writers in this city, a fecal reference appears.
"If this is a trend rather than a funk, the Oilers will need new press clippings.

Because the previous batch extolling their obscenely deep, three-line offensive attack guaranteed to produce an endless supply of goals this season are best left at the bottom of Polly's cage for now. That way, the Oilers will be forced to stop reading them, or at least get their noses dirty doing it.

And that looks to be one of their biggest problems. Some of them apparently forgot who they are, or more precisely, how they need to play the game. And all these wins aren't helping them remember.

So there they are, six games into their offensive landslide and they have 17 goals. Big whoop. That's not exactly going to scare anybody in the new National Hockey League, where even the ugly guys score. Did they read all that glowing prose about their sparkling offence and start to believe they'd inherit goals by divine right rather than working hard and smart enough to make it happen every night?"

Comments:

I beat Barnes by a day.

Definitely this team has bought into the hype about their powerhouse offence.

And all the wins, while better then losses, aren't teaching this team a damn thing.

The fact that some guys are seeing less icetime (Torres too right?) while Thoresen, for one, is seeing more minutes, leads me to believe that MacT has seen enough.

That has to be one of the most boring hockey games I have sat down to "watch" in a very long time.

Anemic offense is the new black.

Anemic offense is the new black.

Hilarious.

The Oilers PP has dropped from 6th (27.8%) to 17th (15.8%) in four days. Our PP is tied for 3rd at least (90.2%), thank God, or else I'm sure we'd be in Flames territory.

The good thing is that this team can win the ugly games.

Not every one is going to be a great one.

Now the worry is - are they having too many ugly games?

Still 4 and 2 - can't complain too much.

Although as peter said on another thread its been a weird start - up is down and black is white.

DVO has two goals.

Thoresen has two as well.

Stoll has none.

Flames are losing games 5-4. Oil are winning 2-1.

Where the hell is everyone today? Does everybody just want to pretend, like tothebank suggested?

you have some good points about the offense... last year guys were scoring because they new we had no offense and therefore had to work extra hard.... this year, despite the fact that it is largely the same players, we are supposed to have plenty of offense so we don't have to worry about that.... that is kind of how it appears.

This is really illustrated well with guys like Horcoff, even last year I don't think we ever really saw him as a dynamic talent, just a blue-collar guy that reads the plays, goes to net... etc...

I think we need to get back to that.

Ironically, I think the defense is benefitting from the lack of confidence that the offense benefitted from last year... it is a known soft spot, so they all focus better on helping out

But all that said, it is early, and we are 4-2... so I'm really fairly pleased with where we are at.

Oh and Thoreson is cool.

So they've played 6 games and their ranking by PP% dropped significantly going from games 4 to 6? Big deal. This is a classic example of overanalyzing a small sample size compounded by breaking down the PPs from one freaking game.

Even mudcrutch's numbers are damn near meaningless at this point. Although I don't believe he really intended to attach that much merit to them.

After 10-15 games we'll know what the Oilers have on the PP. They've played 2-3 games of excellent PP hockey and they've played 2-3 games of fairly crummy PP hockey. I really don't think any conclusions can be made beyond that.

Oh, come on. I wasn't throwing attempting to be Bill James here.

They've played 2-3 games of excellent PP hockey

When, last year?

Grabia, you've got the memory of a goldfish.

The PP was good in both Cal games (especially G1) and they picked up two PP goals in just 3:43 of PP TOI against SJ.

Andy - why didn't you also quote the part where I pointed out they're getting decent results despite not getting shots?

I think the second point answers the first. Sure, the powerplay was successful in those early games, but it wasn't good. They got lucky, as far as I'm concerned. And I think the shot numbers back that up. I agree, Tyler, that they have gotten decent results considering how shitty the PP is, and I don't know why I left it out. Blinding rage, maybe. But I still think RiversQ is confusing things. Short-term results aren't the only thing that matters when other indicators tell you that long-term there could be big trouble.

haha funny after seeing a totally sucking and blowing oilers team since 1992...

all of a sudden we are beating teams in crappy games...and young bitch slapped oilers fans are already crying about HOW the team wins...

last time i checked a team only needs to score 1 more goal than the opposition to win a game...and oilers have managed to do this so far this season on a .667 clip...

mactavish coached a collection of whatever players to the finals only a relatively few games ago...

most of the pro sports writers imagined oilers would finish out of the playoffs, and right now at least the cling to 6th spot...not bad at all...

remembering a top 6 that included stiffs like comrie marchant and anson carter...as far as i am concerned the oilers can tank as many games as they need to figure out what to do about losing you-all-know-who last july...

what-me worry?

I'm with Alfred E. Newman.

*snork!*

heres something to REALLY worry about...

imagine this lineup:

comrie /dvorak /carter

cleary/grier/isbister

poti/ulanov/cross/sean brown

tommy salo to hold the fort

LOL

I'm happy with the wins. I really am. The concern is that if we keep playing that way, eventually the well will run dry. Even the players admitted as much after Tuesday's game.

And that set of lines makes me want to call my mommy.

Wow, that's our 2nd and 3rd lines and D pairs from 2002 or 2003, isn't it? God damn.
