"..the Battle of Alberta is back on, big time."

Don't let the need for free registration discourage you from checking out Colby Cosh's Western Standard column on the Oilers, Edmonton and Calgary. I got a chuckle out of the conclusion:
Right now Calgarians must be envious, disappointed and angry--just the way Edmontonians like them. Let the fun begin.

Also good for a chuckle: that the column was filed before the Pronger trade sitch-uh-ation, and as such, is upbeat in a manner that really hasn't been seen since from Oiler fans. Read the whole thing.

Comments:

it's the most one sided rivalry ever. i seriously didn't think much of it until visiting calgarypuck last week and noticing how the threads with the most posts are the oilers threads and how a select few individuals posts consist only of oiler bashing mantra. you can't find a hint of the flames on HFOil or Oilfans. i just don't think the oiler fans reciprocate the tension.

it's the most one sided rivalry ever.

Even I wouldn't go that far. The Yankees have a 26-6 lead on the Red Sox in World Series titles. That one trumps all. The BoA is definitely one-sided, and always has been, but I wouldn't say it's the most one-sided rivalry ever. And I say that as a Red Sox and Oilers fan.

yeah, i meant one sided in terms of the rivalry itself. the battle of alberta just isn't a huge deal to me.

Matt's entitled to chuckle at the awkward dating of the column, I guess (as it happens, my attempt to digest the Pronger deal can be found on a newsstand near you right now). I do notice that Calgarians, including Fenwick up till now, have been a little quiet about the whole Pronger thing. I suspect even a fanbase that cloddish realizes that it could just as easily have happened to them. It just so happens that they don't have any underpaid superstars on the roster.

And anyway, what part of "Envious, disappointed, and angry" doesn't still apply? Perhaps I was wrong to assume that the Scarlet Whores' playoff suicide, coupled with an Oilers playoff run that people will be talking about for 50 years, would do anything to shake Matt's upbeat "All is for the best in all possible Calgaries" attitude. But I doubt he speaks for all Flames fans.

Let's get together again in 50 years and see if we are still talking about the Oilers' failure to win the Cup in '06. I'm betting we won't be.

"Envious, disappointed and angry" described, in part, my feelings about the Oilers c. June 15. The happenings of June 19 and the Oil's subsequent off season meltdown has done wonders to improve my mood, actually.

Yeah, you're right. It probably won't take long for people to forget about the Jason Williams goal-that-wasn't, Pronger's hit on Dan Cleary, the Roloson-to-Peca pass, Ryan Smyth's teeth, Pisani's 14 goals, the single most stirring rendition of the national anthem (or maybe anyone's), Roloson's injury, Conklin's mistake, and the most dramatic Stanley Cup final since Buffalo-Dallas.

Sorry, I'm afraid the options here are "envious" or "willfully stupid." In this world, some teams have a mystique. Others just share a locker room.

Well said, Mr. Cosh.

Yes, how wilfully stupid of me. I am sure the balladeers are even now writing the songs that will be sung a half century hence about this, the second greatest team of the '06 Stanley Cup playoffs. The one with such locker room mystique that a bunch of the guys who shared it wanted to be (and are) sharing a different room now.

Peter goes boom!

"It just so happens that they don't have any underpaid superstars on the roster"

Since Kipper plays for Calgary, I'm guessing you're talking about the Oilers. Except for the "superstars" part.

Haha...a bunch of Oilers fans patting each other on the back with phrases like "Flames fans are always talking about the Oilers...they are so obsessed with us. Not us with them though. Nu-huh."

Gold.

Have to give points to the guy who pointed to Kipper's salary. Single best contract in the NHL today imo (I also like Colin White contract in New Jersey). Pity the Flames when that comes due though...

Flamers are fine next year as they have a lot of fat in the roster (Hamrlik, Nilson, Amonte and Friesen), the trick will be the year after that with Iginla, Kipper, Langkow, Regehr, Kobasew and (possibly) Phaneuf all looking for more dollars. Even if god blows some sunshine up Cowtown's butt and Iginla and Langkow sign for same dollars Kipper and Regehr will be getting a LOT more cash.

metrognome, I'm sorry but if you took a look at the first few pages of HFOil or Oilfans compared to that calgarypuck site you would see what i mean.

You're right. We won't have time to talk about disappointment. Oiler fans will be too busy teaching youngens about the many Stanley Cups to be won in the next half-century — and the Shames' annual playoff (or regular-season) capitulations.

an Oilers playoff run that people will be talking about for 50 years

Dude, give it up. I thought we Eastern Bastards were the only ones capable of navel-gazing like that.
