Mystery Men

As of today, July 11, 2006, this is what we know. I will assume that we sign Hemsky, Horcoff, Stoll and Lupul. Other than that, I make no assumptions. This defence could end up being Canes and Sabres good, or it could end up being Conkkanen bad. Just what is Kevin Lowe thinking, is what I would like to know. It seems to me like you could write a book about everything that's happened to the Oilers this summer. Start with the playoff run, move into the Pronger fiasco, the draft, free agency, and the filling of a roster. And do it all through Lowe. It could and would be a fantastic read. But we know that won't happen, so I have to ask: where the hell are Edmonton's hockey reporters? Why are we not getting insight into the thinking and strategizing of Oilers management? Or the absence of both? I don't care. Just a few articles, please. Pretty please?

Comments:

I hear you man... I'm dying for news.

On a side note, I'm starting to feel better lately about the comparison that we can now draw between our current roster and last seasons sabres. No stars but pretty deep and interchangeable.

Furthermore, we could have a rediculuous number of 20+ (or even 30+) goal scorers this year. If we somehow manage to resign Samsanov (which is apparently more and more of a possability) our forward lines are really deep.

Smyth, Horcoff, Hemsky (all 20+)
Samsanov, Stoll, Lupul (all 20+)
Torres, Schremp??, Pisani (maybe)

That leaves the likes of Moreau, Reasoner, and Pouliot/Winchester on the 4th line. I really don't mind those lines at all... not that those are necessarily the combos, nor are we really even 50/50 on samsanov, but still there is potential.

D is a whole different story, but goaltending should be better than last year so who knows. Maybe they can float around 8th again until Lowe picks up some more UFA late and make another run?

Does anyone have any guesses as to what we can really expect from Schremp? I've never really seen him play much.

Heh, Grabia, those guys probably banked a few months worth of overtime during the Stanley Cup run... I'm sure they're on vacation at least until September now. Maybe an article once in a while, sure, but hockey reporters are on a school teacher's schedule.

I keep my rosters updated on 2k6 on xbox, and the Oilers went from being ranked 6th overall down to about 19th after July 1. The defence is ranked only ahead of Washington right now.

It's a good think NHL 2k7 should be out in time for next season. If it's still 2k6, obviously we'd be in big trouble.

Did Cosh program that game?

Boo hoo.

And I think the reporter/teacher comparison is way off. Unless you just meant in terms of getting summer vacation. I really can't imagine the hours and workload being even remotely similar.

I guess both have to work with brats, though.

I'm talking about the summer vacation part, Grabby.

Aha! I've always wondered how journalists do their hockey analysis - just as I suspected.

It's actually not a bad way to have all of the depth charts in front of you, updated at will.

Grabby? I've actually never been called that one before. Shocking, really.

And I agree about the depth chart thing. I couldn't even begin to tell you how much of my football knowledge has been augmented by Madden. Antonio Gates actually claimed to have learned the Chargers playbook from playing Madden.

I just started playing around with NHL Eastside Hockey Manager today, and the depth of that program is astounding. I'm not sure how accurate it is with certain details though... still, i'll probably learn more from it than by reading hockeydb.

I've always wanted to know what the hell that "game" does.

It doesn't change much, but Pisani's a RWer and Torres is a LWer. Of course, you've been told this at least twice now, so I'm sure you're just being stubborn for effect.

You might as well put Pouliot as fourth on the C depth chart.

Also, since Stoll, Horcoff and Hemsky all filed for arbitration they're as likely to be in the lineup as just about anybody on that depth chart not named Smyth/Smith. You might as well fill those holes as well. We just don't know what they're going to be paid yet.

I said that in my post, and included Lupul. And yes, I'm being stubborn about Torres.

I don't read the posts, I just look at the pictures. Mostly because they speak a thousand words.

Those players are not in the picture.

I guess you've got your heart set on a Moreau/Reasoner/Torres line? Why not just put Smyth at centre on that line too? :p
