The Long Goodbye

Today, 91.7 The Bounce gave Edmontonians the chance to say goodbye to Georges Laraque. They showed a clip tonight on the news, and I was pleased and astounded to see the number of people who went to the station to say goodbye. I don't have a story to link to, or a photo, but the lineup must have gone for a couple of blocks. The news report claimed that "thousands" came to bid farewell, and I believe it. Just an awesome sight. I wish I had known of it before the fact.

Sniff. Sniff.

***Friday Update*** A couple of stories are now up. Thanks to Rod for the links.

Waaaah!

Who says we just cheer for laundry. Le GG will always be loved.

I'm actually considering buying a Laraque Coyotes jersey. I'll probably come to my senses once I see one up close, and remember how God-ugly their uniforms are.

I went by there around 5PM and the line up was still down the block. Georges didn't look tired at all and was taking lots of pictures with people and always had a smile!

Actually, the new Coyotes jerseys look pretty damned good. They ditched the neo-Cubist shit and went with something that actually looked like a hockey jersey, and I like it quite a bit.

Georges is loved in Edmonton. That's for sure.

Coyotes uniform, still ugly. The Coyotes and Ducks, two ugliest uniforms hands down.

What about Nashville's 3rd jersey? Wasn't that created to make the other 29 teams feel better about their own threads?

I thought the Predators third jersey was to remind everyone to put mustard on their hot dogs?

Off-topic, but interesting, I thought. From Sportsnet:

Unrestricted free agent centre Eric Lindros reportedly made a recent visit to Edmonton to discuss a possible future with the Oilers.

Tim Wharnsby reports in today’s Globe and Mail that Lindros wants to resume his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs but is willing to entertain a change of address.

And Mike Peca is willing to take less money - I know how this works, having read Matt's piece.

The big guy was signing all day (8:00AM to 5:30 PM according to the Journal). The Sun mentioned that Laraque was fund raising too (an autograph for a donation to the Stollery).

Georges is the man. He'll be missed, by the team, and obviously the fans. I remember a story a few years ago about Georges receiving a letter from a child in Lac La Biche hoping to meet #27. Not even bothering to check exactly where Lac La Biche was, Georges got behind the wheel and drove up to their house for a surprise visit. Unreal.

The Stars third/uterus jersey was the worst.

C'mon. That jersey single-handedly taught thousands of guys how to locate the clitoris.
