Whew!
That was a little too close for comfort.
Quick hits while I charge up the ole defibrillator:
- Scott Oake's Unintentional Comedy Rating just went through the roof after asking Staios and Moreau "Why is it better to get married in a church?"
- Staois' Intentional Comedy Rating also went through the roof for answering: "What kind of show is this?"
- Pronger had a rough game tonight; but Tarnstrom actually looked pretty good out there.
- Jussi was decent. He scared the hell out of me a few times handling the puck, and that crazy blocker redirect he pulled on the final play was a disaster waiting to happen; but I'll take it.
- Horc and Smytty come through as predicted. Hemsky continues both to look dynamite and to frustrate.
Anyway, back to the important stuff: THE OIL ARE BACK IN THIS SERIES, BABY!
This is just a crazy team we're supporting this year. What a gut check of a game to win. Ugly? Yes. Just what the doctor ordered.
[UPDATE]:I want to get this out of the way before it goes bananas.
The Score is reporting that most of the Carolina players after tonight's game refused to talk to the media, and when they were forced to, gave one word answers and whined about the final goal. The analysts even suggested -- gasp -- that perhaps Ruff was right and the Canes are poor losers. Ouch.
The crux of the matter is, apparently, that they are claiming that Smyth's goal should have been disallowed because it was goaltender interference or some damn thing.
I've watched the replay about 10 times now, and I have yet to see Smyth make any contact with Ward. I'm not sure what Laviolette thinks he was watching.
Comments:
Man, they have to put some more behind Ward though, huh? He's dynamite but both goals - nice and easy shots at the net, someone going to it hard.
Have to get a few more like that.
I thought Dicque looked alright. Greene too.
Even if he was kinda sketchy, I think it was great that Jussi was confident enough to go out there and grab the puck.
He's no Roli, but he's also no Conklin.. you know what I mean?
Well maybe the Canes coach should review the rule book. 78 i, if the puck is loose in the crease incidental contact while playing the puck is allowed. Although I think Ryan got shoved. It counts.. We have something to build on...

I think they're angrier at themselves for playing a weak-sauce game than anything else--that tends to be interpreted by people who don't know the team (like, for example, The Score's analysts) as "whining".

I'll give you that for the players not wanting to give interviews -- although that is still pretty lame to hide in the dressing room rather than talk to the media (no matter what the reason) -- but I can't give the same benefit of the doubt to Lav's comments on the goal. But to be fair, I didn't see his entire presser, so maybe he didn't dwell on it.
But to be fair, I didn't see his entire presser, so maybe he didn't dwell on it.
I watched it--Lavi's comments were brief and amounted to "Meh. Not happy with it, but shit happens."
Can I say that the Canes refusing to talk to the media shows a "disrespect for the game," or is that only reserved for large black men who punishes all-comers? D-Lee? Cason?
Cosh better get a Game 3 analysis up soon, or I am gonna lose it. We need to revert to standard mojo form.
I've watched the replay about 10 times now, and I have yet to see Smyth make any contact with Ward.
Cam Ward needs a Roloson mask to sell it better.
the second one he wasn't allowed to make the save.
Acually, he did make the save. He just couldn't hold on to the rebound. Shocker.
I've realized now that I've got the same anti-beard mojo that Grabia had going for a while there: every game we've lost since at least the second round has come on a day when I haven't shaved in at least 48 hrs. Too bad I didn't actually document it, like everyone else, or it could've become part of the Oilogosphere Mystique™.
How about that Hemsky wraparound? Ironically, he should have held it a second or two longer.
The series will go the Oilers way now that Laviolette is forced into coaching. He´s weak, just look at the USA performance in the Olys. Seems like the winner has got in the Canes heads, so they´ll be mental midgets for Game 4.
Go Oilers
When Conklin came right out and faced the media barely minutes after he assisted on Brindy's goal in G1, and Jason Smith too - yeah, you can't blame Carolina for not wanting to face the media, but you can call their character into question.
Maybe not fair, but life isn't fair and that's what's expected, so suck it up, answer the questions, then go back to the dressing room and strangle a puppy, if that's what it takes.
desdemona: it was Greene that Markkanen stole the puck from, IIRC.
I went back to the anti-beard mojo, and the Whale jersey, by the way. A glorious victory resulted. I may apply for my next job in that Whalers jersey.
Interesting thing to note - where's drfrank? brian?
Oh, this is like the Wings series when after Oiler wins only AtoY was able to access Oiler blogs to discuss what happened. Apparently AQ has also managed to get around those technical problems.
Good on her.
Funny about the others though. Hope they're ok.
He´s weak, just look at the USA performance in the Olys.
Because of course, it wasn't at all the fault of the players like Modano and Chelios.
Apparently AQ has also managed to get around those technical problems.
Mighty caucasian of you to say that, son. At any rate:
I don't speak for Cason and d-lee, and I certainly don't speak for DFL or that fucktard "Brian". I speak only for myself--if the other 'Canes bloggers (and Brian the Fuckhead Troll) represent, they represent. If not, then not.
Aaron Ward said after the game that expecting the Oilers to just roll over and die is disrespectful to them--I think the n00bs like Brian would do well to remember that.
I firmly believe that the Hurricanes will win the Cxp, but I also know that the Oilers aren't going to go down without a fight.
AQ tell us what u really think of Brian. Game 4 promises to be a good one. Go Oilers.Every Cane player was on the phone walking behind the Score analysts on the way out of the rink.
AQ... what does 'mighty caucasian of you' mean?
Just curious.
Also, re: mojo,
I too returned to the undefeated shirt, the stubble, and pacing incessantly between different tv's at the venue I am at.
We, like so many 'Africans' facing their 'Carolina masters', shall overcome.
AQ, you weren't before, but now you're an idiot.
I'm actually not arguing that the goal should have been disallowed.
However, the point that the Canes were arguing was rule 78g:
If an attacking player establishes a significant position within the goal crease, so as to obstruct the goalkeeper's vision and impair his ability to defend his goal, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed.
I, myself, don't think that contact was made. That wasn't the issue. It was that Smyth was so far in the crease that Ward couldn't protect his goal. That's what Lavi meant by "he wasn't allowed to make the save"
Like I say, though... I don't have a problem with the ruling. I'm just pointing out where the arguemet was coming from.
Looking forward to game 4.
"Because of course, it wasn't at all the fault of the players like Modano and Chelios."
Remind me again how Chelios caused the downfall of the US team, AQ.
Rule 78g is irrelevant. The puck was loose. The player is allowed to pursue. If the Canes don't like it, they should teach Ward how to not let out a rebound.
The rule that governed the play was and still is 78 i... About the whining well so be it... This is the finals and the teams are supposed to be available to the press after the games. Jeebus Conklin after his brain fart spoke to the press, so did Smith. It happens but really is not making the Canes look to classy. Who cares in the grand scheme winning this thing is not a popularity contest.. except for the Conn Smythe where this may impact the voting

You heard it here first. Conklin for Conn Smythe, awarded for 'most willing to face the press(ure) in the playoffs'
DrFrank was at the beach with no internet access.
You talk big after you win a game.
I'm just happy that we can play badly, the Oilers can play their best game of the series, and they still have trouble beating us.
I originally predicted Canes in 6 or 7.
I expect a win tomorrow. A pissed off Rod Brind'Amour is not what you want to fuck with.
Earl, he's talking about the fact the press votes and Brind'Amour just did what is a huuuuge no-no by not talking to the masses after a game. I could see some media members going with their second Carolina choice because of that.
The whole Conn Smythe thing really seems to be up in the air, doesn't it? Carolina doesn't have an overwhelming candidate, Roloson's out, and Pronger will need to assemble a couple of really good games to reestablish his credentials. If Pisani can fit in a hat trick somewhere here, he may pull into the lead.
Cosh, does "A friend just phoned and reported that the riot squad is out in full force, which is a shame; but I have to say that when I was down there around 2:00 PM this afternoon there was already a rather seedy looking element congregating." and "Police have promised to use the same no-nonsense tactics they used Saturday night, when they arrested 205 partiers who went too far"(Edm Sun) mean the northern version of the "whores-in-training revel nightly in a lake of urine and vomit" have lead to the "display of proletarian aggression and instruct the police to impose overt fascism" in Edmonton?
The Pot is looking very black, from the Kettle's point of view.
Sure, buddy. I'm no blind supporter of cops in any uniform, but the pot tolerated quite a lot of fires and stabbings before the police presence was increased. Unlike the kettle, it didn't pre-emptively start busting balls because of nudity and loud motorbikes.
I was actually somewhat concerned that the takeover of the situation by the Tactical Unit was going to lead to a bloody pitched confrontation between the cops and the partiers, but the EPS seems to have managed things well.
Yes, they did, but I'm not sure tolerating 'quite a lot of stabbings and fires' was such a good thing. Perhaps having more EPS on call to quell things when they start to get out of hand would have been a good thing.
I think the CPS fumbled the Red Mile with their heavy handedness, but things should not have been allowed to get to the point they did in Edmonton where, on the first night, things were a bit 'frisky'. The EPS should have known at that point it was only going to increase. Mob mentality can be ugly.
Personally, I hope the Oil fans can reclaim the Whyte Ave from the few hooligans. However, the Karma after your earlier remarks had to be noted.
credit to you drfrank for showing up - during the wings series we had a whack of trolls who only showed up after wins and suddenly disappeared when the Oilers won
I talk the same win or lose btw.
How do you get in and out your house with that massive chip on your shoulder by the way? Jeez you're cranky.
Relax and enjoy. You sound like Doug Weight.
