Weir saving the sympathy for after the 4th L

This is Stan Weir (at right). The picture is #331 from the 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee series of hockey cards.

I'm at somewhat of a loss to explain why I own Stan. As you can see, he is in very poor condition; hard to believe I kept him around for 25+ years in unwitting anticipation of this moment. He is also the only card I own from this entire series, as 79/80 was slightly before my own time collecting.

This may be why I kept Stan around; as a simple record/reminder of the look of that year's cards. Anyway, from the back of Stan:
The very good blog Lowetide has had tremendous results -- to Sacamano's great approval -- pumping Stan as a talisman. Stan has been very lucky for the Oil. Ipso facto, I don't like Stan very much.

Stan cheated at dodgeball when he was a kid. When the other Oilers went out for beers after a game, Stan headed back to the hotel to watch Mama's Family. Another little known fact: when Glen Sather tried to trade Weir away to the Colorado Rockies in 81/82 for Ed Cooper, Stan cursed Slats and the off-ice staff, guaranteeing them, "you'll never draft anyone as good as me for a lot of years, boys". Stan needs to go away, and the Oilers need to lose this series. So, about a half-hour before puck drop last night, some hard pipe-hittin' fellazthe family and I went to work on Stan with a blowtorch and a pair of plierssome toothpicks.

Hands. Let's hope there's no more of this ridiculous business of Horcoff and Pisani being Johnny On-the-Spot. Carolina will surrender scoring chances; we need some whiffs, boys.

Legs. The Oil had a lot of days off there to rest those aging stems, especially valuable for the D. A lot of those aches and pains will be gone now; I'm hoping that mysterious thing called "jump" will be too.

Head. One of my highlights of the year was MacT's rant about a "junior hockey mentality"; I believe it was after the game where the Oil gave up 2 in the final minute to Colorado. If you could just go ahead and go back to that state, that'd be great, mmm-kay? Thanks.

Ahem. Just cause. I don't want this Oiler success propagating itself, so to speak.

Stan's magic is kaput. So it is written, so shall it be.

Wow. Your bitterness has reached new levels. You really should seek counselling for the hate on you have.

How are the Flames doing in their fight against poverty?

I hear the golf courses in Calgary are really well kept this year, likely due to the frequent celebrity visits they are getting this playoff season.

I think bitterness and hate are the wrong words, Grace. I don't want the Oilers to win the Cup, because I can't stomach the idea of a 6-1 score in Cups. I don't see how my motivation could be much more sincere and straightforward.

P.S. I am taking a golf trip this weekend. Should be fun.

Say hi to Jarmoe for me.

And send my love to Bertuzzi (I hate all NW opponents equally)

Yeah because a 5-1 score still really favours Calgary.

I'm from Montreal, and since they have 23 Stanley cups, that makes me a better and smarter fan than those from Edmonton and Calgary combined.

Simply... ghoulish.

But I can't help but tip my hat.

Oh my goodness. That is the most heinous thing ever done on this blog. Horrific.

Well done, sir.

Yeah, it is, and I feel marginally icky, but I had to do something.

Watch this backfire in your face now. Well played, though. I'd have done the same to a Lanny McDonald card if I was in your position.

Ghoulish? Not at all. Weir was a *bum*.

This is awesome, thank you Matt. Ahem. The Flames and matt have no power to hurt the Oilers anymore. The sacrilegious destruction of a Weir icon can only work in the Oilers favour. One can hope that the hockey Gods will be so angered by this act as to realize their folly in taking Roli from us. In the end, the Oilers victory will go from being simply inspiring to miraculous.

mais oui = plus merde

Funny how Stan's stance on that hockey card is the same as Gretzky's stance on his rookie card on the same year. Pretty bold of you to finish off your only 1979 Opee Chee card though!

I collected the whole series that year and Weir's was the hardest card to get.

Jason you may be right. I'm not sure I ever had that card at all. Strange now how easy it was to get Gretzky's rookie tho. I had 4 of them, and then, being a foolish kid, destroyed and / or lost them!

lol. Good one, this made me smile today and that's a pretty tough thing to do.

Just a quick note that Stan took three seemingly mortal blows and did not BLEED.

Love that guy.

Roger that... this can only be a good sign for the Oil. Thanks Matt! Pretty bold move. I'll tell you why... you know I remember back in 1991 when me and my older brother(i was 12 and he was 17) did something similar in the Minnesota series... we burned one of those giant 7-11 NHL Northstars Big Gulp plastic cups out in the undergroud parking of my parents house before game 3 and threw all of our Minny O-Pee-Chee and Pro-Set and UpperDeck cards(even Modano rookie cards!) into the little fire on the concrete and cursed and spat at the wreckage. This was right before game 3. The series was tied at 1. Anyways, I clearly remember that Minny just killed us in the next two at the Met Center and we lost in 5 games. They eventually lost to the Pens that year.

After that I never did any burning/stabbing/breaking of other teams paraphenelia. Trust me I was very tempted when we lost all those years to Dallas. Come to think of it since Minny eventually moved to Dallas in 1993 that might have still been a fresh memory in the Hockey Gods minds. They remembered my little "ritual". I think this Weir voodoo thing tops it though.

If and when "Markie Mark" comes in and magically turns himself into a cloned version of Mikka Hasek and stones the Canes we will witness the wrath of the Hockey Gods firsthand. This should be fun!

GOILERS!!!

Nice to see Matt back again. You really must have been waiting for something like this huh?

Sorry about sounding bitter, (although, it's nowhere near the level you have achieved) I think I've been drunk since Monday nights game.

Your kid's shirt is hilarious.

Twerps ! Stan the Man made being a Calif Seals Fan so cool ! Fickle as we are I can tell you I still love those Seals and especially that Centerman. I miss those guys.
I think we actually beat Boston and the Habs once.
I'd give a hefty sum for a Juniors jersey of Stan-A-Roo.

Happy Holidays !

If not ghoulish, then morbid is an option :-) Anyway, its really a card that needs to go (and of course, only after your son's final blessing).
hockey card memories
