Weir not going to stand idly by...

Tonight is the beginning of the end. What can I say? I just about can't deal with the prospect of the Oilers winning a Stanley Cup. Having 5-1 thrown in my face is bad enough when all 6 Cups were won back when Pleasure Motors was in PJs with feet; 6-1 might just extinguish my will to live, or at least, follow hockey.

My sincerest hope is that the Oilers' run continues to follow the same pattern at the Flames in '04: much like the car flag campaign and the Red (Blue) Mile, let it be nearly identical, but not quite as good. Doug Weight skating the Cup around in front of the Rexall faithfulcrowd after a Game 6 clincher is a heartwarming daydream.

Also, over the past two rounds, I've popped in now and then with half-assed jinxes, and spotlighted karmically questionable Edmonton activity. And, it's not working. Clearly I need to attempt something more affirmative to ensure that Oiler mojo never really gets going. Mudcrutch's preview is pretty bloodless, and correct: the Oilers ought to be favoured in this series. Carolina is going to need a bit of luck -- the good kind. The header of this post is a teaser; I'll see what I can do, and post it as an off-day feature tomorrow.

Comments:

Everyone pull out their Stan Weir cards!!! Matt is clearly going to burn one in effigy. It must be countered! All hands on deck!

I am ringing Stan's house now. Once he remembers his place is "one long, one short" he'll pick up and your ass is grass.

Stink eye!

I hated Doug Weight when he was an Oiler. Now he might be my most favoritest player in the whole wide world.

And I am at a loss to understand why so many people are so quick to make the 8th place Oilers the favorite over the second place Canes. After watching the Sabres/Canes series, I just can't see it. The Canes have a lot of team speed, scoring depth on every line, a hot goalie and Mike Commodore. Normally the clock strikes midnight on these Cinderella runs sometime in the final (see, for ex: Flames 04, Ducks 03, Canes 02, Sabres 99, Panthers 96).

Go Doug! Go Canes!

Calgary wasn't a true Cinderella in 2003-04 because of the Kipper Effect

Was there a Giguere effect in '03? Or at that point, is it just a numbers-be-damned performance?

Only the gutless Flames can carry the hopes and dreams of a nation so close and than fall flat on their face! The Oilers will finish where all others failed and bring the cup home, where it belongs! Analyze all you want... at the end of the day make sure you embrace the inevitable so you can fully savor what is about to take place!

I don't think anything in this world could give me greater pleasure than Edmonton winning another cup and watching Calgary fans jump off of their respective hockey chairs. Then again, who would they cheer for in the BoA? I wouldn't hold my breathe for the Stamps, another historically shitty Calgary team (Grey Cups: 13 to 5). Then again, maybe most Calgary fans would just give up, making the "Battle" of Alberta even less of a battle than it already is.

Ahhh, that feels better.

Damn misspellings...

The Mike Commodore comment was a bit of a joke, but I was serious in my thoughts that I don't know why the Hurricanes aren't getting more respect fropm the Canadian sports commentariat. They finished second in the East and challenged for number 1 all season. They don't have any significant injury troubles and they are a fast, exciting team.

I agree that the Oilers defence are better than the Canes, but only cuz of Pronger (and he has been very good). After that, it seems like a wash to me. The Canes forwards are quite a bit better and Pronger can't take every shift (even though it seems like he does sometimes).

The Oilers have had a comparatively easy path to the final (facing what was in hindsight an overrated No.1 seed, a 5 seed and a 6.) This is the best team they will have faced yet, so they will have to change their approach of laying back for long stretches and being out shot every game if they are going to win this thing.

Go Canes

No. With both Roloson and Kiprusoff you had a massive improvement over what was reflected in the regular season stats because they didn't play many games. The regular season stats weren't a good reflection of the team.

Ah, the Stumpy effect, then.

>The Oilers have had a comparatively easy path to the final

You have to be kidding.

Now wait, I guess it's obvious: because the Oilers beat them, Detroit, San Jose and Anaheim suddenly look soft to a Calgary Flames fan. Naturally.

Montreal had no goalie and no defence, New Jersey had one scoring line and Buffalo was sporting an all-AHL defence. By far, Carolina had the easy path to the Cup Finals.

There's also no way on earth a Southeast Division team is winning the Cup two years in a row. That's preposterous.

That's why the league had to take a year off.

Brind'amour is now my most favouritist player in the world.

With Jason Smith and Ty Conklin coming in 2 and 3.

BWAHAHAHA!!!!!

In fairness, Fenwick, they were Oilers PJs. With feet.
