Stanley Cup Finals - Game 5

Preview

With Sacamano off to Places that Suck and Parts Unknown, I thought I'd sub in for the game day feature. He actually might be on the grid right now in Englande, but I doubt he'll be chiming in unless the Oil comes all the way back before he's off to Russia. I don't want him to turn in to Keith Jackson or Sugar Ray Leonard ("How can we miss you if you never go away" Syndrome).

Keys to the Game:
  • Which Stan Weir magic will prove more powerful?
  • Will Popcorn/Robimus Prime draw into the lineup?
  • If he does, will he score?
  • If he scores, what will his celebration look like? (My upset pick: holds his stick like a phallus, makes back-and-forth slapping motion)
  • If that happens, would that pretty much neutralize a Hockey Jesus metaphor, or anything else with religious connotations?
  • Will Jussi remember that he's a Conkannen, or continue his strong play?
I think the crowd at The Drugstore gets to see one more game (whereupon they have to face the Curse of the NiƱa - look out).

Tonight's Prediction: 3-2 Oil (Smyth, Smyth again, and D-vo with the OT winner).

Comments:

My prediction for Schremp is the Sam Cassell "Look at my giant testicles" special.

Fernando Torres scored the 4th in Spain's smashing of Ukraine today. That must mean something?

Great site by the way.

way to pick up the slack Matt, right down to the highly improbable Dvo goal

well done!

Well done indeed. Hope Schremp is ready to go.

What grego said ( I commented on Mirtle's page this morning )- a good omen, to be sure.

Harvey is in, Georges is out.

Take out Dvorak?!? Boy, if I knew how to ban a commenter...

Schremp is on the roster, he was called up after the London Knights flamed out of the playoffs.

Someone else mentioned that the Habs in the 60's used to bring in their rookies exclusively on special teams.

Yvan Cournoyer once mentioned that all he played was the PP, and used to tell Jean Beliveau, "Jean, you cannot always score in the first 10 seconds of the PP, otherwise I won't get any ice time!"

Aside from that, maybe the Oil should have used Schremp.

I don't care what happens from here on in. This team has captured my heart and they are what I hoped a post-CBA Oilers team would be.

Oilers fans have proven themselves to be the class of the league and have set the standard whether at Rexall or RBC Centre.

Go Oilers go!

I am very angry that Schremp is not playing. I still think he would have had the nerve to skate out on the opposition's ice after getting the first star and then give the fans two middle fingers. As for his actual goal celebrations, I loved both ideas from Matt and Cosh, but I think on the first powerplay goal he would have done the old Robbie Fowler move. That is to say, he would have slid on his knees into the goal crease and inhaled Cam Ward's snow like it was Colombian cocaine. On the second goal, he would have skated down the side boards towards the Canes bench, made like he was gathering up a big loogie to spit on the coaching staff, and then looked up at the crowd and waved a "no no" finger at them.

I wish we would have thought of this earlier. We could have spent a day speculating on his post-game celebrations.

Looks like Smytty uncovered the Canes mojo source at home. Hopefully the spell has been broken.

Yeah baby!!!!!!!

Awesome! Operation cling to your playoff life like crazy was a sucess! Just need for the boys to hold in there for two more games and pull it off.

I'm with you Mc79 - the last two days I have just been resigned - people will say "sorry about the Oilers". I say "its not over yet" but have a hard time believing it.

No margin for error but if the Canes are as beat up as they may be getting and if the Oilers' PP gets going and if Markannen keeps playing the way he is.

A million ifs.

But I'm back in - its going to kill me if they lose but I think this is going 7.

btw - Fenwick, where's the victory post?

if you're going to do this, you have to do it right!

I'm with you boys...I got a little belief MoJo back after G3 but it was quickly quashed by Recchi's 2-1 goal late in P2/G4.

I still watched HC and TH last night but I got so sick of the Canes love-in that I couldn't stomach it tonight and just tuned in for the start of the game. I figured it was over but I didn't want to watch this game...it would've been the beginning of the end.

Then Pisani scores Buchberger seconds in and I'm hooked!!

Now we're back to Rexall and:

- Can any road really win two of three games at Rexall? I doubt it.
- Williams hasn't been any great shakes since G3. He's defintely hurting.
- Ward has to be doubtful for G6..Aaron I mean. He looked concussed by the early Torres hit. Sure he came back but probably on guts alone. I'd bet he doesn't play in G6.
- I'd be blown away if Weight played. That will hurt their PP.
- If the Oilers keep the Canes to one or less PP goals then you have to like our chances to take it to 7.

In the words of George Costanza...
"I'm back baby I'm back."

I have a victory post up. Matt's probably torn between obligation to the blog and self-hatred for even typing in the words "Oilers" and "Stanley Cup Finals."

Oilers fans have proven themselves to be the class of the league and have set the standard whether at Rexall or RBC Centre.

Too bad some of internet Oiler fans have lost perspective after losing a game in these finals.

ingmar:

It isn't so much that they lost it's HOW they lost. I mean, let's review.

Game 1: We're home counting our chickens and I'm mentally branding that Pronger reaction to the penalty shot into my brain forever and all of a sudden we lose it? Devastating.

Game 2: Worst game by either team in the final and "bleeding out" is about the best description of everyone save Markkanen.

Game 3: WIN BABY.

Game 4: The Velvet Fog Mel Torme Hurricanes gas the town team.

Game 5: The Hockey Gods pay us back.

When you've followed this team as long as most of us have it's no wonder we pull our hearts back a little bit.

I mean, we're not virgins here but Jeebus most of us belong in the song "Third Rate Romance" based on this team's last decade.

I had given up hope until I read the site before ball last night. Pisani Torres with a goal at the World cup? That's a huge omen. The kicker was Smytty stealing the lucky coin, though. From that moment on, I was back in it, and we are going to win this baby in seven. I switched up my karma routine, too, taking off the top portion of my playoff goat :P Look like James Hetfield now ;)

If the Oilers do come back and win it in 7, does Pisani win the Conn Smythe? With 12 goals, four game winners (and more could be on the way), I'd say he'd be the best choice.

rd - good choice but if they come back, it will be Pronger still I'd say

unless Nando ends Games 6 and 7 with OT heroics

then maybe he gets the nod

Did you all catch this moment in Game 4? I had to replay the DVD a few times after I recorded it too.

Footage off CBC right after Pisani scored the winning goal! Check out the "Caniac" groping his crotch.. and McTavish signalling on his fingers a SEVEN... as in.. see you back here on Game 7!

Oilers... all the way!

PS - Visit my website for the entire third period! The best goal I've ever seen in the NHL... ok... perhaps the other one Pissani scored to keep us alive too! :)
