Olympic Game Day

Be sure to check out Jennifer Heil of Spruce Grove, AB go for the gold in the moguls at 11AM MT; she had the top score in the qualifier earlier in the day.

Also, the women's hockey team kicks off their sked against Italy at half past noon. Go Canada.

I have some personal history with that referee for the Canada-Italy game. I hope that this is the absolute last we see of her-she's a terrible official and she'd be out of her depth doing an Italy-Germany game.

Nice win for Heil-her jumps weren't all that impressive but she is an incredible moguls skiier. Nice moment too when they announced her as being from the US-way to fuck it up guys.

I love Steve Armitage, but for the sake of those of who don't follow these sports for 206 weeks followed by a two week period of intense interest, could he give us a fair and accurate representation of who the Canadian contenders actually are? I hung around watching speed skating this morning, only to have Armitage, who had been pimping the guy who's name I already forgot tirelessly, acknowledge that "His best finish ever was 6th."

6th? Fuck that. I'm not one of those fans of Canadian Olympians from the 1980's when we talked about top 8 finishes. I want medals and lots of 'em. I also want to watch people win medals, or at least have an idea of what I should anticipate.

Wait... you lost me at "I love Steve Armitage". Let me guess--your father looked a lot like Fred Flintstone and hung around teenage swim meets?

I like the passion at the end of the race. Invariably, Armitage does sports that I have no familiarity with. Still, it does get very exciting when you've got Armstrong roaring out of your tv speaker that:

He makes things that I don't care about seem exciting. How can you not love and respect that?

the guy I despise is Williams.

How long does it take for there to be a minor controversy that he blows way out of proportion and spends the next 700 hours talking about rather than talking about the athletes actually competing?

I like him too, if only because it's like having a talking clock in your house. Just turn on CBC and within five minutes, he'll let you know the time.

Any of you guys watch Heil win live? When they announced the scores and she started doing her "YES! YES! YES!" it got a little dusty in the Law Student Hole of Squalor, to paraphrase Bill Simmons. That's what makes the Olympics so much fun to watch.

I have trouble mustering up emotion for a moguls skier, but I would definitely advocate a North/South Alberta medal count on the main page of this site.

Well, I am sure with all those amazing facilities that are in Calgary, athletes from that area will come out in front. Right, Matt?
