Flames Game Day

Classic trap game for the Flames tonight, with the newly Hull-less Coyotes in town. Despite the Flames pair of goals in the 1st on Saturday, I'm concerned about the opening period again. A convincing scoreboard result in the previous game, when combined with non-aggressive play in the later stages, usually translates to a listless opening. I hope I'm wrong.

We'll also see if Franco-American backup goalie Philippe Sauve gets his first start. If this homestand were a little more compressed, it would be assured, but with two more days off before the finale against Edmonton on Thursday, Sutter may send Kipper back out there to ride the wave.

If you want to watch the game on the tee-vee, get thee to a bar: FSN Arizona has got the only coverage. Otherwise, it's the Fan 960 -- puck drop at 7-ish. Go Flames.

Comments:

Gentleman, I need some advice on a serious matter, and only a neutral arbitrator will do. I have a hockey pool that I am administor of, and one of the participants in this pool had drafted Brett Hull. He now wants to re-draft a new player in place of Brett. Now, we didn't have clear rules at the outset, however half of the poolies say yes to his request, and the other half say no. I could go either way, but am looking for advice here. My primary concern is that another guy in my pool has Yzerman, and i would not be surprised if he ends up retiring this year too. So, can someone give me a suggested course of action? much appreciated boys!

I'd put retirements in the same category as season ending injuries, and so no redraft allowed.

In fact, I think you could make the argument that retirement of some of these old out of shape types might have been more predictable at the outset than injuries - and so should have been subject to some sort of "due-dilligence" type of risk assesment.

Afterall, it's not like Gretzky gets to "redraft" someone after losing what he presumably thought was someone who could score him some goals.

only if the new player is older &/or more decrepit than the retiring one

Absolutely. Tough garbanzos to the fellow who drafted Hull. Look at it this way: it's entirely possible that had he dressed for 82, he still wouldn't have scored. Allowing a replacement would be excessive compensation for a minor loss (although jhuck probably has a point - if he wants to replace him with Lucky Luc or Derian Hatcher, that might be an acceptable compromise).

Cheers, thanks for the help fellas. Its funny how political this hockey pool issues can become. I guess its because a year off just made this years pool more competitive.
thanks again.

D-mac's game day prediction...

Flames 6-3. Iggy netting a hat trick and the game winner.

As for the pool dilemma -- that's tough but the pick has to stand. Yzerman is not going to make it through the season I figure. It would be endless.

Apparently this issue is settled, but let me add a vote in favour of fucking the redraft guy square in the ear. Shouldn't even be an issue. Sacamano is right: if you can lose a player to a freak injury without compensation, which every hockey pool in the universe permits, why is there even a discussion about a player who quit because he sucked (as many people predicted he would)?

If I were in your pool and I had Sundin--and I presume someone did, since you were scraping the barrel for Brett Hull--I would be raising holy ever-loving hell a mile high.

Fuck him like the dog that saved Charleston from the 1938 flood!

Let's see how long it takes for Sac to fill in the blank here. I bet he gets the pop culture reference immediately.

" Ladies and gentlemen, this tall drink of water headed my way is a pillar of the [journalistic] community who informed me earlier today of a nefarious plan of his to screw [a hockey pool contestant] in an extremely uncomfortable place."

Wait for it...wait...wait for it...

In the meantime, screw the guy who picked Hull. I had a guy pick up Damphousse this season too. All we did is laugh and bug the shit out of him until he dropped him. If the guy is worried about the dropoff in points by losing Hull, he shouldn't even be in the pool.

I can't believe someone is trying that. It almost desereves its own post.

"What like the back of a Volkswagen"

"Breakfast, shmreakfast. Look at the score, for Christ's sake. It's only the second period and I'm up twelve to two. Breakfasts come and go, Renee, but Harford the Whale, they only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime"

I got the right movie, but had it as Jay rather than Brodie. Good thing my old friend Google has skills.

Bingo. We have a winner.

Multiple people say the line in the movie. It is never Jay though.

God I love Brodie Bruce.

23 giveaways by the Flames tonight. That can't help.

Unbelievably, even if the Oilers lose their fourth straight game tomorrow, they will still be ahead of the Flames.

I would rather not be arguing over who is going to end up fourth and fifth in the division.
