Katz Gets 100%

Rexall Founder and Chairman Daryl Katz said today that Rexall Sports Corp. has received letters of acceptance representing 100% of the total shares outstanding in Edmonton Investor Group Holdings...

Mr. Katz also announced plans to create an advisory board that will participate in the stewardship of the team and its ongoing relationship with the fans and the City. The Board will be comprised of up to five current EIG shareholders and other community leaders.

  1. Did Katz just imply that the greatest guys in Edmonton history were merely "community leaders"? I thought this guy was supposed to be a class act! Boo, Mr. Katz. Boo.

Also, there's been far too much hockey talk on this blog lately. I welcome the long-related return to ownership and arena discussion. Mr. Grabia, my kudos unto you!

  2. From TSN:

"The city is also looking into building a new rink to replace Rexall Place which originally opened in 1974. Edmonton does not want to use taxpayers' money to build an arena that could cost upwards of $1 billion."

    (that was to sooth Andy)

Apparently, TSN got ahold of a book Katz put together to educate the EIG about himself. Musta been some book!

You really have to cut down on those fur-lined urinals and gold gum spitoons. Let's try and keep it to NINE figures, okay?

The link is here. Nothing too impressive, though I do like the image of a young Katz, with what appears to be a VERY full head of hair, celebrating the Oilers third Stanley Cup victory. He looks like one of the Sweathogs. :)

  6. Hey, that's what I get paid the big no-money and insults for. Glad to help. :)

  7. Gotta love the cheap, hasty sketches of a "Founder's Lounge" and the (apparently) new arena "design".

  8. Glad I wasn't the only one who found those interesting. I'm assuming a verbal presentation was to go along with the document, because it isn't text heavy at all.

  9. Another good piece by Dan Barnes in Wednesday's paper. He really has been excellent in covering this story. I knew we liked that guy for a reason. :)

  10. Mad props to Barnes indeed. He's been the absolute polar opposite of Terry Jones on this issue, in terms of content, quality, and objectivity.

If I were Katz, I'd black-ball that fat fuck at any and all press conferences and conference calls, but that's just me. Even today, his article in the Sun has the odd shot here and there at Katz, with the underlying implication that his ownership isn't going to "measure up" to that of the EIG somehow.

  11. Some city councillors are putting out some pre-report objections to taxpayer dollars for a downtown arena.

The aforementioned Jones article is here. He really is unbelievable. Today he's complaining about Edmontonians not being able to look into Katz's eyes. And sinister press releases. Those "carefully-worded press releases." He's right, though. I could handle poorly-worded press releases. But the carefully-worded variety? HELL NO! CAREFULLY-WORDED DARYL KATZ AIN'T FOOLING ME!!! UH UH!!

Which would play right into his hands. If he goes out of his way to be accommodating, being sure to take every question the dumb fuck asks, he pretty much cuts Jones off at the knees.

If you can make your detractors look like retarded twats without being rude about it, you can win the war without firing a shot, so to speak. That seems like fundamental PR to me.

  13. where do i send my cheque for the new arena?

it's already included in next 5 years of property tax bills!!!!

well, hell, you make this all to easy!!!

  14. From the SUN today:

"In relation to Katz's pursuit of the Edmonton Oilers, rumours have surfaced about the pending removal of at least one high-ranking team executive when Katz indeed gets his hands on the franchise - but nothing has been confirmed."

My money's on lead weasels Alan Watt or Pat Laforge. You guys should set up a pole or something to that effect.

I'm sure some people would be agreeable with their departure, but...dude.
