"On the other hand, Matt Kenwick from the Battle of Alberta blog did some number crunching and determined that in two-and-a-half seasons of the post-lockout era, only five active NHLers have scored a better rate at even strength than Tanguay -- Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley, Joe Thornton, Sidney Crosby and Marian Gaborik."
--Jean LeFebvre, Calgary Herald

That post of Matt Fenwick's is here.

  1. A public apology to Matt for my gaffe. I really should know better, especially since the newspaper always gets my name wrong in print (there's no capital F).

To Matt and everyone associated with this blog, keep up the great work.

  2. Andy appearing in the Journal, Matt getting some love in the Herald. Can I get a "you sold out!" chant, WWE-style?

  4. I can't help but notice that they went with the 3-season average....

Probably a good idea, because going by just this year, he's not doing so hot.... hell, horcoff and hemsky are beating him...

    Just saying....

    Sigh. I have no response.

  6. I think it's very cool that Jean L. mentioned Matt's stats in his paper and cooler still that he came here to post about it again.

That being said, why aren't these guys doing their Own number crunching?

Seems odd to me. The info's out there for everyone, why wait for someone else to do the work?

  7. Heh, these guys can't win.

A reporter sees some nice analysis on a blog, credits it properly (minus the typo) and still can't quell the cynics?

Let me say this: When I was running around the ACC talking to players a few weeks ago, the last thing I had time to do was fire up my spreadsheet and go Behind The Net on a player's numbers. Some days you just can't do it all and file by deadline.

  8. Excuses excuses Mirtle.

What the hell do you do with the other 21 hours of your busy day?

    :)

  9. Congrats Matt.

Kudos to Lefebvre for citing the source and coming here to apologize for the misprint.

  10. Nice to see the mainstream media noticing the excellent work that is being done here by Matt and Andy.

Here's hoping Darryl reads the article, comes here, and is miraculously convinced not to trade Tanguay for a lesser talent!

I'm hoping he reads the article, comes here, and still decides to trade Tanguay.

    Signed,

  12. I always knew that Kenwick had the stuff to be a mainstream media stooge. And I was telling my boss the other day, 'Boss, it's high time we ran a piece by that Glabia fellow?'

  13. Glabia is actually what Andy's real last name is. He had to change it to avoid the teasing.

I hope you weren't taking my comment more seriously than it was intended.

No, no. I knew it was some gentlemanly ribbing.

  16. James, considering your directed your last comment towards me, I'll put this one towards you.

First off, I credited Jean for deciding to post the stats and for giving propers. I guess you must've missed that, though, while you were running around the ACC.

Finally, if I'm writing about the club for which the oft-rumored player is employed, the first thing I'm going to do is wonder why there are all these rumors and I'm going to dig and try and find his worth or his lackthereof.

Then again, I guess that's just me. Or just me and a lot of other fellows.

Once again, not a slam at Jean as much as it is proof why so many people migrate toward blogs for hard info. I just wonder how long it will take before reporters learn to and/or care to think in this manner.

Sure, but if you are smart, you'll look around and see if someone's already done the work for you. That's just sensible. Personally, I would fire up Behind the Net after being at the ACC, but I don't have a problem with LeFebvre saving time and doing what all of us do: surf for existing and new information in crafting a story.

  18. Why would lefebvre reinvent the wheel?
Besides, the majority of people who stumble across the text that fills the spaces between ads in the Herald, Journal and Suns are not numbers-oriented poindexters. They just want to read something while they're sitting on the john, or something to talk about at coffee. Spreadsheets might be fun to some people, but they don't sell newspapers. Sorry to burst bubbles.

  19. What's spreadsheety;) to point out that the guy has value when it comes to scoring at evens?

I still think it's cool that Jean L decided to link to Matt's work. I'm just saying that it's still odd how those guys don't think of that stuff themselves. For instance, no one at the Edm rags have ever gotten into how inept Stoll is at evens?

BTW, I certainly hope Mirtle isn't buddies with anyone at the Edm papers!!! Lest his cane once again find my backside!!!
