A note...

...to Hall of Famer Jim Matheson: see, it is possible to write a nice column about a good guy/bad player without denying reality, and without giving the fans a Shame On You. This might be embarrassing, but just check out the other paper in town:
If you want to say Conklin hasn't been good enough, there's no argument here. At 5-5-1 with a 3.12 goals-against average and saves-percentage of .872, the numbers speak for themselves.
[...]
Conklin is a pro. He's a good teammate. He's an example that bad things can happen to good people. Conklin cares. Before you applaud his exit, you should know that much.

Well done, Robin Brownlee, for showing Matty how it's done.

Comments:

It was his failure to develop some kind of charming regional accent like Morrison's that was the real killer.

A much forgotten fact is that Marty Reasoner was also waived by the Oilers before he retooled his game and became --in my mind (and perhaps my mind alone)--one of the most valuable players on the team.

No kidding on the accent. You'd think he'd have made better use of his 3 years in New Hampshire, rather than just locking in college-level goaltending skills.

Totally OT, and my apologies for no link, but TSN reported Jose Theodore tested positive for Propecia, the hair restoring drug, which WADA has banned as a masking agent for steroids. The funniest part is that he's 29, and according to team doctors, he's been using it for several years. I've heard of preventative medicine, but eeesh.

Hey Jose, two minutes for looking so good!

Bwa. Nice one Julian, that made my day.

I'm so relieved that Smytty's mullet is all natural.

I can't take credit for it, but yeah, it a got a good chuckle out of me.

Remember when a small-time fourth liner named Shawn Horcoff was named the least-liked Oiler on the team by fans in a Journal Poll?

What was that, 3 years ago?

There's a reason the HF Jackals aren't Gms.
